Chapter 29 - Lo Brother, Spare My Sister-in-Law
Chapter 29 Lo Brother, Spare My Sister-in-Law
In the short span of one month, Kowloon Stronghold experienced its second fire. However, this time, almost all the fire trucks and water tanks on Hong Kong Island were prepared and ready. At 6 PM sharp, the fire trucks sounded their sirens and raced towards the Stronghold, beginning to spray water to put out the flames.
The civilians of the Stronghold gathered outside, looking on with blank faces at the scene. To them, the orderly conduct of the fire brigade seemed absurd. Under the pressure of the water cannons, the bloodshed from last night seemed to be washed away, but the charred houses and broken buildings could not be saved.
Tens of thousands of people lost their homes overnight. They looked at the fierce gangsters surrounding them but dared not speak. Once the fire brigade had entered, the police arrived next. They began registering the civilians’ details and distributing food and water, without mentioning last night’s events.
“Officer, our homes are gone. What are we supposed to do?” One of the civilians couldn’t help but ask a police officer. Others lifted their heads, elderly and children, middle-aged men and women, all looking at the officer.
The police officer didn’t respond, impatiently waving them away. Just as the tension was about to turn into anger, a few police cars pulled up, and several administrative officers stepped out, holding loudspeakers.
“Please don’t worry, residents. The government has approved the unconditional restoration of your homes,” they announced.
“Please cooperate with the registration process to avoid being overlooked.”
They repeated the message several times to make sure everyone heard it.
As soon as they finished speaking, large trucks began arriving, transporting containers towards the Stronghold. The administrative officers handed out flyers outlining the reconstruction plan for the Stronghold, assuring the residents that they would have homes within a year. In the meantime, they would have to stay in temporary accommodations made from modified shipping containers.
The unrest that was about to break out was quickly quelled, like spring snow melting away. The majority of the Stronghold had been destroyed. Even if the buildings still stood, their interiors were ruined. The residents alone would need a long time to restore them to a livable state.
Historically, when the Stronghold was to be demolished, it sparked intense opposition from its residents, leading to a clash with the British government’s demolition teams. However, with Lei Luo’s methodical strategy, he had eliminated the greatest hidden threat. Even though some people were still unhappy, it no longer mattered in the grand scheme of things.
In a large restaurant in Kowloon, the big bosses who had spent the night fighting gathered. Some were joyous, some in pain, and some indifferent.
The battle at the Stronghold last night could be considered a draw. After Sang Gou’s death, the majority of the Digital Gang’s members either defected or fled. The Stronghold members also quickly adapted, blending into the civilian population.
In the end, the deaths from both the Digital Gang and the Stronghold accounted for less than a fifth of their total numbers. The other gangs had similar outcomes, with only a few daring to charge headlong into the fight.
Inside the restaurant’s hall, all the big bosses had complex expressions as they looked at the man sitting in the middle—Liu Chen of Hong Xing.
In just one night, this name had spread throughout the underground world of Hong Kong Island. He was the first to charge and ultimately killed the leaders of both the Digital Gang and the Stronghold. His group was the most crucial to last night’s victory, unmatched by anyone else.
Now, Xiang Yan and He Sheng, the leaders of other gangs, also arrived at the restaurant and immediately noticed Liu Chen sitting there. However, neither of them tried to drive him away; they simply walked to the side and sat down.
“Young and formidable,” He Sheng, the older of the two, spoke first.
Xiang Yan glanced at him, knowing He Sheng intended to win over Hong Xing, and followed up with, “Last night, Hong Xing contributed the most. They should establish a foothold in Kowloon. My Yian Gang will fully support them.”
Liu Chen glanced at both older men and smiled, cupping his fists in acknowledgment.
“Just arrived, with nothing to my name. I could only rely on hard work and good luck,” Liu Chen casually brushed off the events of last night.
But Xiang Yan and He Sheng weren’t fools and certainly didn’t believe his words. If Liu Chen could cut down leaders in the complex environment of the Stronghold, who else could stand against him outside?
Before Xiang Yan could speak again, everyone stood up in unison. It was Lei Luo’s arrival!
Lei Luo, smelling of alcohol and having not slept all night, still looked energetic. He had already received the battle reports from the previous night and now had a more intuitive understanding of Liu Chen’s capabilities.
Without a word, he sat down and immediately handed over the core territories of Kowloon—Kowloon Tong, Kowloon City, and Kowloon Bay—to Hong Xing.
The other peripheral areas were assigned to Yian Gang, He Sheng, and the other gangs. As for the fleeing members of the Digital Gang and the Stronghold, Lei Luo announced that the main perpetrators had been eliminated and there would be no further pursuit. However, the name of the Digital Gang would be eradicated.
This prevented the Digital Gang from scattering and causing further chaos on Hong Kong Island. Xiang Yan and the others were indifferent to Lei Luo’s arrangement. After witnessing his methods firsthand, they were simply eager to restore the usual order of things.
In less than half a month, two of the four major gangs had disappeared. Yiqun was wiped out completely, with their leader, Ah Hao, still in the Golden Triangle. The Digital Gang’s leaders were killed, and the remaining members scattered, seeking new paths.
Regarding Yiqun, Ah Hao’s wife and children were safely protected on Hong Kong Island, and Ah Hao’s assets remained untouched. But the Digital Gang was different. Lei Luo didn’t announce the distribution of the Digital Gang’s assets right away, but everyone understood what it meant.
That piece of meat was already in Lei Luo’s pocket, and no one else could dream of it. After the meeting concluded in a whirlwind, Lei Luo, along with Liu Chen and Piggy Oil, left the restaurant.
Anyone could tell that Hong Xing had replaced Yiqun, becoming Lei Luo’s most loyal subordinate. After leaving the restaurant, Lei Luo brought Hong Xing’s men to a villa. This villa used to belong to Li Tai.
After Li Tai’s death, Sang Gou had wanted to move in under the pretext of protecting the sister-in-law but failed due to the chaos that followed.
Lei Luo’s purpose for coming here was clear—this was where the Digital Gang’s asset documents were stored. Although he now had the “With the Nation Resting” investment return system, he wasn’t going to let free assets slip by.
When the car stopped in front of the villa, a few figures rushed out from inside. Leading them was Chen Min, a red stick from the Digital Gang.
“Lo Brother, don’t bring harm to the family. There’s no need to go to such extremes,” Chen Min said as he stepped forward, his eyes locked on Lei Luo.
What do you think?
