Chapter 426
“Really?” Qin Tiantian still sounded uncertain.
Qin Xian nodded. “It’s true. If she wanted to die, she wouldn’t have sent you a message.”
As soon as Qin Xian said this, Qin Tiantian believed him. She replied to Duan Yi’s message, sending her a few words of blessing and goodwill.
And with that, this chaotic incident finally came to an end.
Ji Fei stared speechlessly at Qin Xian. Why does everything he says sound so credible? I’m the one with the actual proof here!
Qin Xian reached out and patted her head indulgently. “Did you get a good nap this afternoon?”
Ji Fei nodded. With no emotional burdens weighing her down, she’d slept quite well. “Didn’t you rest at all?”
“I’m fine.” Despite saying this, Qin Xian leaned his head against Ji Fei’s as if he could only relax when close to her.
Ji Fei’s heart ached at the sight, so she stopped fussing around. She tugged Qin Xian to bed early, insisting they get some rest.
Later, while Qin Xian was sound asleep beside her, Ji Fei couldn’t fall asleep herself. She lay next to him, scrolling through her phone. When she got tired of that, she looked at the sleeping man beside her—his peaceful face calming her nerves. She smiled mischievously and planted a couple of quick kisses on his cheek. Qin Xian, by now used to sleeping next to her, didn’t wake easily. Occasionally, he would instinctively pull her closer or nuzzle into the crook of her shoulder.
It was as if being near her gave him a sense of security, and he always tried to mold his body to hers, as though they were two pieces of a puzzle fitting perfectly together.
Each time this happened, Ji Fei’s heart melted a little more. Who would’ve thought that this iceberg of a man, cold and untouchable in public, could be so soft and kitten-like when he slept?
She continued playing on her phone, scrolling through group chats where the family was talking about the upcoming birthday banquet. Everyone had arrived except for the stepdaughter—Seventh Aunt Lü Meihe—and her family.
Ji Fei put her phone down, lost in thought. Lü Meihe’s family was the last to be verified.
Through her time with the Qin family, Ji Fei had pieced together a picture of Lü Meihe’s life.
Unlike the eldest aunt, who held the most authority, or the stubborn and independent Fifth Aunt, Seventh Aunt Lü Meihe had been the most pampered member of the family when she was younger. Everyone doted on her, thinking it was a way to show affection for Grandma Lü. Because of this, they treated her like a biological sibling despite her being adopted.
She’d always been cheerful, lively, and considerate—someone who charmed everyone around her. The only rebellious phase she’d had was in high school when she started an online romance with a foreign university student. No one in the family ever met this mysterious boyfriend, and they dismissed her as being overly infatuated, spending all her time chatting online with him.
Though it might not be directly connected, her first love ended during the period when she was accompanying Qin Xian. At the time, young Qin Xian was going through psychological challenges, and Lü Meihe devoted herself to helping him. Her family noticed that this marked a turning point—she matured and stopped her online romance.
Coincidentally, she ended up marrying Dr. Yu Hongxian, the very foreign psychologist the family had hired to treat Qin Xian’s mental health issues. It was during the treatment sessions that the two grew close.
After Qin Xian was taken away by his parents, Lü Meihe married Dr. Yu and moved abroad to live with him.
Over time, perhaps due to the distance or her lack of involvement in the Qin family business, Lü Meihe gradually lost contact with the family. With no biological ties to keep the connection strong, she became a stranger to most of them, only appearing at family gatherings once every few years.
Even her daughter, Yu Lu, hadn’t been seen in about six or seven years.
Coincidentally, Yu Lu was the same age as Qin Tiantian—both were turning eighteen this year.
Because of the patriarch’s milestone birthday, Grandma Lü had personally urged Lü Meihe to return with her family. Reluctantly, they agreed to attend.
The reality of family relationships, however, was complicated. Everyone had their own lives, and bonds often weakened over time.
Ji Fei shook her head, deciding not to dwell on it. Speculating on things without evidence was pointless.
For now, she would enjoy a peaceful nap with Qin Xian.
Two days later, word came that Lü Meihe and her daughter would be arriving early, while her husband, due to medical commitments, would join them on the day of the banquet.
Their arrival coincided with dinnertime. After eating, the family gathered to wait for Lü Meihe and her daughter.
Grandma Lü was visibly nervous, rubbing her hands together in anticipation of seeing her daughter and granddaughter.
The other elders started chatting.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with Meihe. She barely comes home. Last time Lü Aunty saw her was two years ago. They only video chat otherwise.”
“She used to be so lively. I don’t know why she’s become so distant.”
“Whenever we see her, she seems the same. I heard her husband doesn’t like her coming back.”
“What? Is he some kind of control freak? You’d think a psychologist would know better.”
“Apparently, he’s just really clingy. He takes her everywhere—even on business trips.”
Hearing this, Lü Aunty chimed in with a smile, “He’s definitely clingy. Meihe told me she had to sneak back with her daughter two days early this time. Otherwise, he would have insisted they come back together on the last day.”
Seeing Lü Aunty’s cheerful demeanor, no one said much else. It was, after all, a matter between husband and wife. From the outside, it seemed like Meihe was happy, so there was no need to meddle.
Meanwhile, Qin Father and Qin Mother were reminded that this brother-in-law had been Qin Xian’s first psychologist. He was the one who diagnosed Qin Xian with autism, memory confusion, and emotional detachment. He had also been the one to declare that his abilities weren’t enough to treat Qin Xian and suggested they seek help elsewhere.
Given Ji Fei’s track record of uncovering hidden truths about the family, Qin Father and Qin Mother couldn’t help but exchange uneasy glances. They secretly hoped that this final reunion would reveal nothing incriminating.
They would rather blame themselves for being neglectful parents than discover that Qin Xian had been harmed by someone else. Such a revelation would break their hearts.
Qin Xian, sitting quietly with Ji Fei in his arms, stared into space. He had no clear memories of Lü Meihe due to his childhood mental state. Even when he tried to recall, he could only form vague impressions.
Still, thinking about her caused a strange heaviness in his chest. It was as though… as though…
Why is this taking so long?
Qin Xian blinked, hearing Ji Fei’s restless thoughts. He smiled helplessly. These past two days, Ji Fei had been unusually tense, not even interested in going out.
Sigh. I hope it’s nothing. I don’t want to accuse anyone unfairly. Grandma Lü has been so kind and caring during this time, and I don’t want to see her sad. But if they’re involved, I won’t let it slide—not even if it means exposing my secret.
What do you think?
