Chapter 425
Duan Yi thought her entire life was a joke, and all of it was thanks to this woman—the woman who thought she loved her biological daughter the most, the woman who believed she was sacrificing everything for her daughter's happiness.
Duan Yi suddenly wanted to laugh. She admitted that all of this was karma, punishment for this woman’s sinful schemes. But why did all that punishment fall on her?
Why was she cursed with such a mother? A mother who was so weak yet so greedy and selfish.
Once, she had longed for a sliver of maternal love. Later, when she stopped longing for it, she didn’t think it was her fault—it wasn’t her real mother, after all. But now, to be told that the woman who was so stingy she wouldn’t spare her even a shred of love was her true mother? And that this real mother had actually loved her deeply, but loved the wrong person instead?
Heh. Ha ha ha.
Duan Yi just wanted to end this ridiculous life. She wanted this woman to die—and she didn’t want to live anymore, either.
Of course, the bodyguards stopped her again.
“I’m sorry, cough, cough, I’m so sorry, Xiaoyi… I didn’t know. I really didn’t know it would turn out like this. I just wanted to give you the best life. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Mommy will treat you well from now on, treat you well forever!” Aunt Mao choked out between coughs, begging humbly for forgiveness.
But Duan Yi only wanted to scream. “I’ll tell you this—don’t you ever think I’ll forgive you in this lifetime. Even in death, I won’t forgive you! Mother? Mommy? You think you deserve those titles? You’re the one who ruined my life! You! And only you! I hate you! I hate you! I wish you would just die—die!”
In truth, Duan Yi had never asked for much. She had only ever wanted her mother to love her, just a little.
She didn’t need the life of a rich heiress. She had never needed that.
The sheer intensity of Duan Yi’s hatred seemed to manifest physically, leaving Aunt Mao in anguish. Yet the pitiful scene only earned sighs from the onlookers—no one had much sympathy left to spare. After all, this was their own feud.
“Enough! This is the Qin family’s home. Take your drama somewhere else!” Sixth Uncle snapped, clearly unwilling to look at them any longer. “Butler, fire Aunt Mao. From now on, none of them are allowed to set foot in the Qin family home again. Have them escorted out!”
Considering how Aunt Mao had once schemed against Qin Tiantian, they had no intention of letting her off easily. But for now, settling the family’s emotions was more important—they didn’t want to see these disgraceful people any longer.
Soon, Aunt Mao, her husband, and Duan Yi were escorted out. The other staff and medical personnel who had been brought in were treated well, especially the head nurse. Sixth Uncle and Sixth Aunt gave her a generous red envelope, promising to repay her kindness if she ever needed help in the future.
The head nurse, however, only felt she had been doing her duty and refused to take credit.
The Qin family, having endured a sleepless and stressful night, began to recover from the ordeal. By evening, Qin Tiantian had returned. When Ji Fei came downstairs, she saw everyone gathered around Tiantian, chatting and laughing.
Tiantian’s eyes were still swollen—who knew how many times she had cried throughout the day.
In hindsight, it was all rather unfortunate. If Ji Fei and Qin Xian had acted sooner and gotten the results first, perhaps Sixth Uncle’s family wouldn’t have had to endure this nightmare. Even if Duan Yi had shown up unexpectedly, it could have been resolved quickly. But the timing had been just right for this catastrophe to unfold.
It was clear that from now on, Sixth Uncle and Sixth Aunt wouldn’t just pamper Qin Tiantian—they would spoil her to the heavens. After all, they had almost lost her.
“Sigh, I wonder how Duan Yi is doing?” Qin Tiantian suddenly said.
“Why are you still thinking about her?”
“Yeah, she might be pitiful, but it has nothing to do with you.”
Qin Tiantian replied, “I just feel like… in some way, I played a part in her suffering. It’s hard to explain, but I feel like she was my substitute and took all the hits for me… It’s not quite right, but I don’t know. I just feel bad.”
Everyone told her she was overthinking and too kind-hearted.
But Ji Fei could understand. After all, they had once been friends. Qin Tiantian couldn’t help but worry, even if just a little.
Ji Fei couldn’t resist checking on their situation through her system.
[After being sent home, Duan Yi ran off immediately. Aunt Mao chased after her but couldn’t find her. Meanwhile, her stepson, oblivious to everything, continued to berate Duan Yi and order Aunt Mao to cook dinner. The result… Aunt Mao stabbed him several times.]
The Qin family listening to the gossip were startled.
Was this Aunt Mao’s twisted way of avenging her biological daughter?
But wasn’t it all her own indifference that had caused this in the first place?
[The stepson was rushed to the hospital and survived but suffered severe injuries, leaving him permanently disabled. The stepfather, who had been bitten in the throat earlier, now struggled to swallow and speak and was burdened with the hefty medical bills for his son. The entire family was falling apart. Meanwhile, Aunt Mao, after stabbing her stepson, went mad, wandering the streets with a knife searching for her daughter, until she was eventually arrested. She’s now in police custody, awaiting trial based on the testimonies of her husband and stepson. Even in jail, she keeps begging the police to help her find her daughter.]
The Qin family was horrified as they listened.
Suddenly, Qin Tiantian’s phone buzzed. She picked it up and exclaimed, “It’s Duan Yi!”
Everyone gathered around her immediately.
It was a message from Duan Yi.
“I’m sorry, Qin Tiantian. Thank you for trying to help me once. I was so awful… I’m leaving now, but I’ll remember how you once treated me as a friend.”
Qin Tiantian was instantly alarmed. “She’s not thinking of doing something drastic, is she?”
No one was sure. The message sounded like it could mean that, but also not quite.
“She won’t,” Ji Fei suddenly said. “She’s just found her answer and finally let go of her obsession with maternal love. She feels free now—free enough to leave that mother behind. She’s probably going somewhere new to start over.”
*[Duan Yi secretly returned home, took all the money and identification documents, destroyed everything else, and left the city under the cover of night. When the police arrived, they found nothing but an old, tattered photograph—the only one of Duan Yi and Aunt Mao together. But now, Duan Yi was gone from the picture.]
The Qin family was shaken.
That day, Duan Yi had experienced more than most people would in a lifetime. It seemed she wanted to end it all, cleanly and decisively.
*[The police gave the photo to Aunt Mao, who became desperate to escape prison and find her daughter. But she likely won’t leave prison for a long time, and she’ll never get the chance to make amends.]
The Qin family concluded that Sixth Uncle no longer needed to intervene—Aunt Mao’s life from this point forward would be a torment.
The woman who tried so hard to pave a perfect future for her daughter ultimately lost her entirely. And every day from now on, she would be haunted by the memories of her indifference and cruelty toward the one she should have cherished most.
What do you think?
