Chapter 418
“Mom, Dad, look! This is Xiao Yi,” Qin Tiantian cheerfully introduced Duanyi to her parents as she dashed to their side.
However, Qin Sixth Uncle and Sixth Aunt were infamous doting parents. As soon as they saw their daughter, their attention was entirely on her, showering her with questions about her day before finally shifting their focus.
“So, you’re Xiao Yi? I remember you! Tiantian’s childhood friend. You’ve grown so much, and you’re even prettier now,” Sixth Aunt said with a warm smile.
“Tiantian doesn’t spend much time here, so make sure to cherish the time you two have together as friends. You’re always welcome to visit our home,” Sixth Uncle added, his tone kind and approachable, like a gentle uncle.
To Duanyi, this scene was so perfect it stung with envy. Qin Tiantian really did have the best parents—kind, loving, and completely unchanged over the years.
She genuinely liked Qin Tiantian’s parents. Really, she did. But just as her mother always said, this is fate.
Duanyi greeted them obediently.
Meanwhile, Mao Yi stood to the side, her face pale and cold sweat dotting her brow. Ever since Duanyi arrived, her expression had been grim, though Ji Fei hadn’t paid much attention to it.
Mao Yi kept urging Duanyi to leave.
Qin Sixth Uncle and Aunt assumed Mao Yi had some urgent family matter, so they didn’t linger on pleasantries and offered to have their driver take them home.
But Mao Yi quickly waved her hands, insisting, “No need, I’ll take her back on my electric bike.”
Then, as if terrified of Duanyi staying even a second longer, she hurriedly dragged her away.
It was almost excessive. While it could be interpreted as knowing her place, it seemed a bit too much for a family as kind and approachable as the Qins.
That evening, the younger family members continued their usual games and playful chatter until it was time to wind down.
When Qin Chao was about to leave, Qin Rong subtly hinted for him to stay, as if Ji Fei had something important to discuss.
However, Ji Fei and Qin Xian were sweetly cuddling on the sofa, engrossed in watching videos together. Even after finishing the videos and standing up to leave, Ji Fei showed no signs of bringing anything up.
“Alright, time to rest. Oh, right, I’ll gossip with my husband later,” Ji Fei thought casually.
Qin Rong, who had been suppressing her curiosity all evening, felt utterly betrayed. So that whole ‘discussion’ was just meant for Second Brother?! This is so unfair!
Qin Chao: What are we even doing here? I’m so tired…
When Ji Fei and Qin Xian returned to their room, they began their usual nightly routine of washing up and getting ready for bed. Ji Fei casually brought up the oddities she noticed during the day, and because her guard was down, details she wouldn’t normally share—gleaned from the system—slipped into the conversation. If it were anyone else, they might have immediately realized the truth about Ji Fei’s abilities.
But Qin Xian simply pretended not to notice, patiently letting her finish.
“You don’t need to worry about it,” Qin Xian reassured her after she finished recounting the events. “While Sixth Uncle and Aunt seem easygoing, when it comes to their daughter, they’re incredibly vigilant. Today, nothing happened to Qin Tiantian, but if anything did, they’d rather overreact than overlook it. And if it’s a long-term friend, they’d thoroughly investigate.”
Ji Fei was taken aback. “They’re that strict?”
“Well, she is their treasure,” Qin Xian said with a smile.
“Then any future boyfriend of hers is doomed,” Ji Fei joked.
Qin Xian raised an eyebrow playfully.
Ji Fei suddenly cupped his face with a grin. “But finding a boyfriend won’t be easy for Tiantian. After all, her standard is you, Qin Xian. And where on earth can you find another man as perfect as my husband?”
Qin Xian, unable to control the heat rising to his face, turned his head and kissed Ji Fei’s palm. “I’m not perfect—you are. I’m the lucky one who found the most amazing Ji Fei in the world.”
Ji Fei blushed instantly, leaning in to kiss him.
After a moment of affection, Ji Fei couldn’t help but return to the topic of Duanyi’s mindset.
Qin Xian, ever patient, indulged his wife’s curiosity. “To be honest, it’s not Duanyi’s reactions that bother me—it’s Mao Yi’s behavior. She seems to be hiding something.”
“Really?” Ji Fei’s curiosity was piqued. She instinctively wanted to investigate but quickly realized she didn’t even know Mao Yi’s full name. Embarrassed, she asked, “Um… what’s Mao Yi’s full name, anyway?”
One of Ji Fei’s favorite things about Qin Xian was that no matter how odd her requests were, he never questioned them and always followed through immediately.
Without hesitation, Qin Xian contacted the butler, asking for Mao Yi’s full name, even though it was late at night.
The butler, while puzzled, didn’t hesitate to provide the information at the family head’s request.
As soon as Ji Fei saw the name, her system activated, connecting her to Mao Yi’s background.
“Alright, let’s see… What’s going on with this self-loathing lunatic? Why does she treat her daughter like this? Is it because… Ahhhh!!!”
Ji Fei practically jumped out of Qin Xian’s embrace, her expression one of utter shock.
Qin Xian immediately sat up and held her. “What’s wrong? Did you… realize something?”
But Ji Fei’s thoughts were still screaming internally.
“Ahhhh! What do I do?! Is this true? Sweet, adorable Tiantian… and selfish, narrow-minded Duanyi… Why?! How could this be?! Is Sixth Uncle’s family about to face disaster? Are we really dealing with a switched-at-birth situation here? Mao Yi, you’re despicable! How am I supposed to handle this?!”
Qin Xian was stunned.
He had thought the drama with his eldest sister was absurd enough: a mistress’s son had died, and to seek revenge, she swapped her own son with the legitimate child. Their real son was raised by the mistress for ten years while his eldest sister lived believing she was childless, only to later reunite with her son.
But now… this was an eighteen-year-long switch. A child they had cherished like a treasure for nearly two decades wasn’t even theirs by blood.
If the truth came out, the emotional devastation would be unimaginable.
Ji Fei’s mind continued to spiral. She even felt a twinge of regret for uncovering the secret. As an outsider, the weight of this revelation felt too heavy to bear.
Truthfully, everyone has selfish moments, and Ji Fei was no exception. While she had no blood ties to the Qin family, she had grown fond of Qin Tiantian over the past two days. On the other hand, she had witnessed the ugliness of Duanyi’s actions and thoughts. It was incredibly difficult to accept that Qin Tiantian might not be a true Qin, while Duanyi was.
But rationally, Ji Fei understood how unfair this all was. Duanyi had become the way she was because her rightful life had been stolen from her.
What do you think?
