Chapter 417
A group of women headed to the backyard children’s playground, which featured a bubble sea, slides, and trampolines. Luckily, none of them were overweight, so they could all enjoy the equipment without issues.
As the oldest among them, Ji Fei initially tried to keep up appearances, intending to sit out and watch instead of joining the commotion. But seeing everyone having so much fun, she couldn’t resist and eventually joined in.
Qin Rong secretly recorded multiple videos of Ji Fei playing and sent them to Qin Xian.
Upon receiving them, Qin Xian saved every single one and immediately decided to build a similar playground at their home.
After playing for a while, Duanyi was the first to step out. It seemed she had long since outgrown the carefree nature of a child.
Outside the playground, there was a rest area where refreshments and water were served. Duanyi sat there waiting for the others when Mao Yi showed up again, seemingly urging her to leave.
Ji Fei, still bouncing on the trampoline, observed Mao Yi’s behavior. The more dismissive Mao Yi was toward her daughter, the more likely it was that Duanyi’s resentment toward Qin Tiantian would grow.
The two seemed to have yet another disagreement. In the end, Mao Yi had no choice but to leave temporarily, not daring to escalate the situation further.
When everyone finally finished playing and came out, Duanyi appeared to have composed herself. At least, there was no visible sign of anything wrong on her face.
As they sat down to enjoy some snacks, Ji Fei noticed Duanyi deliberately knocking a spoon off the table with her elbow.
It fell right in Qin Tiantian’s direction.
“Ah, sorry,” Duanyi said, but made no move to pick it up.
Seeing the spoon land near her, Qin Tiantian bent down and casually picked it up.
Watching the entire scene, Ji Fei noticed the faint, smug smile that crossed Duanyi’s face as Qin Tiantian leaned over to retrieve the spoon.
Ji Fei was utterly baffled. This is worth feeling proud about?
Qin Tiantian, oblivious to the undertone, simply said, “It’s dirty. Don’t use it. Let’s ask for another one.”
Duanyi’s expression froze, becoming subtly awkward.
Ji Fei, whose background was as ordinary as it gets, couldn’t fathom this logic. How fragile is her pride that a single remark like that feels like an insult?
Still, seeing that Duanyi didn’t act further, Ji Fei decided to let it go.
When they went back to play again, Qin Tiantian wanted to try the slide. She climbed to the top of the slide’s platform, which had low guardrails designed for children. Normally, there wouldn’t be any danger—unless someone pushed from behind.
The ground below was padded, but a fall could still result in injuries.
As Qin Tiantian called for Duanyi to join her, Duanyi looked at her smiling face and a dark thought flashed through her mind. She didn’t dare intentionally harm Qin Tiantian, but what if they both fell? And if she could make it look like she was saving Qin Tiantian?
She knew it was risky. Qin Tiantian had just promised to secretly help her return to school, even offering to fund her studies without telling Mao Yi, fearing her mother would find an excuse to stop her.
If Qin Tiantian got hurt and turned against her, her future would be jeopardized.
But she couldn’t help it. Mao Yi’s words earlier had been like needles stabbing into her heart—words about how she wasn’t worthy of playing with a “miss” like Qin Tiantian, about how this wasn’t her place or her destiny.
The pain was unbearable, and she felt like she would explode if she didn’t vent it somehow.
In moments of impulse, people become their own worst enemy.
Just as Duanyi reached out, about to push, she felt a sudden shove on her back. She stumbled and almost fell.
“Ah!” Duanyi let out an involuntary cry.
Qin Tiantian quickly turned around and saw Duanyi and Ji Fei bumping into each other.
“Oh no, I’m so sorry! I thought you were both moving forward, but I didn’t expect you to stop,” Ji Fei said with a light laugh.
Qin Tiantian laughed as well. “It’s my fault for being slow. I’ll go down right now, Sister-in-law, don’t rush.”
Duanyi’s face had gone pale. She didn’t dare meet Ji Fei’s eyes, convincing herself that no one could have known what she was thinking. After all, reaching out could be explained away as anything.
Duanyi chalked it up as a failure, dismissing it as her imagination running wild. She didn’t notice the cold gaze behind her.
Qin Rong, who had been playing nearby, suddenly heard her second sister-in-law’s thoughts.
“It seems Duanyi can’t stay around Qin Tiantian. I’ll need to remind her. As for the promise to help… well…”
To be honest, Ji Fei wasn’t sure how to handle this. Duanyi was a relative, but not someone she was close to.
“Oh, wait, since I saw it myself, I can bring it up. I’ll talk it over with the others later and see what they think.”
Qin Rong: ???? What’s going on? Did Duanyi do something?
Half-aware of the situation, Qin Rong couldn’t help but start observing Duanyi more closely.
As she watched, she found it almost absurd—Duanyi and Qin Tiantian even looked somewhat alike.
Later, Qin Tiantian invited Duanyi to stay for lunch, followed by afternoon tea. She even wanted to keep her for dinner, but Mao Yi came to take over her shift and immediately insisted on taking Duanyi away.
Duanyi initially wanted to stay longer but was intimidated by the sharp, almost vicious look in Mao Yi’s eyes.
Duanyi rarely saw her mother like this and felt both wronged and afraid, yet she couldn’t defy her mother, the only family she had.
As Mao Yi led Duanyi away, Sixth Uncle and Sixth Aunt returned.
The couple, who managed part of the Qin Group, hadn’t seen Duanyi earlier since they’d been at the company.
Duanyi had faint memories of seeing them when she was little, picking up Qin Tiantian from school.
The image of their harmonious family—affectionate and doting—was like something out of her dreams.
Their pampering of Qin Tiantian wasn’t just envied by her; even classmates were jealous of how much they treasured her, treating her like a rare gem.
Duanyi often thought Qin Tiantian was just lucky. If she had parents like that, even without the wealth, she would have been happy too.
But instead, she was stuck with a mother who despised her to the core.
Even now, when it would’ve been polite to greet the returning Sixth Uncle and Aunt, Mao Yi seemed eager to hide her, as if ashamed to let her be seen.
Sure, her clothes were shabby—but wasn’t that because Mao Yi spent everything on that father-and-son duo instead of her? If her mother didn’t force her to contribute to their upkeep, she could at least dress like a normal person.
She thought bitterly about how Qin Tiantian had tried to give her clothes earlier. Even without Mao Yi stopping her, she wouldn’t have taken them. She’d rather never wear them than accept Qin Tiantian’s castoffs.
Perhaps Mao Yi’s push had been too rough, or maybe Duanyi had just had enough. She suddenly stepped out from behind her mother and stood conspicuously in the doorway.
Mao Yi panicked and rushed over to pull her back.
“What are you doing? Don’t block the way! Come back here!” Mao Yi scolded, desperate to hide Duanyi.
But now, not only Sixth Uncle and Aunt, but everyone else’s attention was on them.
Ji Fei frowned slightly.
“This Mao Yi… didn’t she eagerly push her way forward last time? But now that it’s her daughter, she’s a hundred times more unwilling. And really, running into someone at the door and not greeting them is even more impolite. Duanyi was invited by Qin Tiantian after all, and it seems they’re familiar.”
What do you think?
