CH.625 Starlight Fenrir
It began like any other day. Me doing my thing and taking care of all the business ventures I’d made, as well as just managing HomeBase.
But in the morning, around 10am, I began to feel a strange pull on my mana. Not much was taken, so little in fact that I naturally recovered it faster than this something was pulling it. But I could feel it. Whatever was taking my mana was intentionally taking it in a way where I would notice it.
I didn’t resist the pull, instead I activated Mana Vision and tried to follow where my mana was going. My first assumption was Varuna. Maybe something was wrong with him and he needed extra mana?
But as I followed the mana line that left my body, it didn’t enter HomeBase. Instead, it simply seeped into the space around me and disappeared. Almost like it was leaving this world … oh frick it is!
I felt for the connection again, and realized the closest skill to this mana leak was my Advanced Summoning Magic. So one of my summonable monsters must be pulling mana from me.
(Laura! Get the Factory’s Dimensional Telescope active! I want eyes on Nir, Himeśaila and Uṛanta.) I called out to Laura.
(Already on it. We’ve confirmed Uṛanta and Swampert. It is neither of them.) Laura said.
(Check Himeśaila next. It is probably Nir, something related to his evolution, so I’m teleporting there first.) I told her.
I used HomeBase to teleport myself to the portal that leads to the Monster World, and while doing so, I told my fiancées where I was heading via our System Link.
In a flash, I was through the portal and already focusing on the ice cave I’d left Nir in. And just a few words later, I was there.
Arriving at the cave, I was able to confirm that it was indeed Nir who was pulling my mana. The line between us was clear to see. … okay, you do actually need Mana Vision for it, you can’t see it without the skill. But you could feel it, as long as you have Mana Control.
Nir was right where we’d left him, sleeping in the bed made of monster pelts. But he was shining bright enough that the pelts covering him couldn’t stop all of the light.
I think the shine is showcasing that his evolution is almost over, but I don’t get it. There is no way he needed that tiny amount of extra mana he pulled from me, so why would Nir go out of his way to pull it? He clearly wanted to send me a message, but what is that message?
(Laura? Do you know what is happening?) I quickly asked. I assumed I knew the answer to that question, but always better to ask instead of assume.
(I’m sorry Master, but something like this has never been recorded before. Tamed or summoned monsters evolving is already exceedingly rare, and one evolving into a beyond SS-rank has never happened before.)
Yeah. I assumed as much. So I need to figure this out on my own.
The best idea I had was focusing on the mana drain between myself and Nir. I tried to feel if he was trying to tell me something with it. I tried to decipher the mana pull like it was morse code or something, but I wasn’t getting anywhere. Even if it was something like that, I didn’t know what code Nir was trying to use, so it would be nearly impossible to decipher.
(Master. Come to the Factory, I think we have something.) Laura said in my head.
I naturally did as asked. If they had something, I needed to know that something.
Appearing on the surveillance platform, I noticed additional monsters on the platform. They were working on a custom terminal that hadn’t been there last time, clearly running decrypting algorithms on the mana signal. They had figured out parts of it, but not all of it. Prominent were the words Race and Name. And with just that, I figured out what Nir needed to finalize his evolution.
“You stupid little wolf.” I said to myself. “You don’t need to ask me for that.”
I quickly thanked my monsters for what they already did, before returning to my body.
Back in Varuna’s icy prison, I looked at Nir. I then stood up, approached the Fenrir and placed my hand onto his head.
“Gleipnir, my Starlight Fenrir. It is time for you to awaken!” I called out.
As I did, Nir the light that had surrounded Nir exploded outwards. It didn’t hurt my eyes, so I simply watched as I saw the last parts of Nir’s evolution.
He was the same size, still huge, but his fur had turned from a silvery gray to nearly completely white, except that it still had some of that silver gray, in the form of a star pattern that ran all across his body. He even had a large star right on his forehead where my palm was resting.
Otherwise he really hadn’t changed much. Not that I expected all that much. Fenrir’s are SS-rank for a reason.
I watched as Nir opened his eyes. They were still blue, as they had been, but now the pupil was star shaped. Nir really took the Star from Starlight and made it his everything.
I backed off a little as Nir began to rise. He looked around the room and quickly noticed the food I left in the time barrier for him.
The Starlight Fenrir looked at me as if asking for permission, so I simply gave it to him.
“Go ahead and eat. We can talk after that.” I told him.
He didn’t wait for me to dispel the barrier, instead just smashing it with his paw, which left small little stars in its wake. He ate the food as if he hadn’t eaten in a week, which is kind of the truth. It has actually been six days since he began evolving.
I just observed Nir as he ate, and when he finally finished his breakfast, I spoke up.
“You know, you didn’t have to call me here just to name your new race.” I told him.
{Perhaps.} The wolf turned to face me, while he licked his lips to get the small chunks of meat off of them and into his mouth. {But I wanted to.}
“... let me guess, you didn’t think I’d have left you a meal and wanted something.” I guessed based on his tone and how quickly he went for the food.
{...}
“You not verbally answering is an answer.” I told the Fenrir, who was avoiding my gaze.
{... Fine. I felt I was going to be hungry.} Nir admitted. {But it wasn’t just that. I did also want you to name my race.}
“Hope you liked it.”
{It is fine. It is the one Master gave it.} Nir answered.
“That’s good. Well, how about a little show and tell? What’s new?” That is something I really wanted to know. I need to know what my new Fenrir can do.
{Let’s get out of this cavern first.} Nir said.
He then faced the cavern roof, before letting out a loud howl. Along with that howl, a beam of shining energy came out of his mouth, which blew open the cavern’s frozen roof and gave us a route out.
While most of the ice that had made the roof blew outwards, some fell back in. A bigger piece was about to fall on me, and I prepared to move it to the side, but Nir was faster, using a skill similar to Flickering Step to get next to me, before he swiped his paw and crushed the ice into pieces.
{My apologies, Master.} He said. {I should have realized that could happen.}
“No harm, no foul.” I told him, as I levitated myself onto his back with Mana Flight. “Jump us out of here, would you?”
{As you wish.} Nir said.
I paid attention to his mana flow, so I noticed him put some into his legs. I also noticed the stars shaped mana particles that left them. So that basically confirms my suspicion.
What suspicion? Well, I think you can figure it out.
On the icy surface, Nir went ahead and showed his new skills. He had learned both Light and Space Magics while he had been hyper learning, and while his Space Magic was still … well worse than mine, he could use some basic spells and even short range teleportation, but his Space Wall was clearly more fragile than mine.
His Light Magic on the other hand was very impressive, especially with the Stardust powering it.
… what? You didn’t figure it out? Yeah. Nir can use Stardust and thus a form of Celestial Magic. Though I think he still has a bit to go before he can match Sorcerer of Dark Magic in terms of magical skills. He should be a match to Shooting Star Dragon though. Probably not Quasar, but Shooting Star Dragon is more of an instinctual user of Celestial Magic than Quasar and Sorcerer of Dark Magic are.

“Well, I’d say you improved quite a bit.” I said to Nir.
{I still have one more trick I would like to show off.} He said.
“Go for it.” I told him. “Then I can teach you how to teleport to seals so you can use my seal network.”
{Thank you, Master.} Nir said, before his entire body began to shine.
The shine was quite bright, but like with the last part of his evolution, it wasn’t blinding. Honestly makes me question if that is him or me? Maybe my Enhanced Vision skill protects me from being blinded?
His shining body began to shrink quickly before taking on a humanoid form, except that with ears coming out of his head and a large tail shooting out from his tailbone.
So he learned how to turn himself into a Fenrir-kin, huh.
Well, that was my assumption, but when the light faded and I saw Nir, I realized I was wrong. The naked wolf-man standing in front of me wasn’t a Fenrir-kin, just a humanoid Fenrir. And the difference was clear for anyone to see.
Because while Nir could go for a Fenrir-kin in terms of his body structure, there was one big difference. His entire body was covered in fur.
“... Nice.” I said to Nir.
“Thank you, Master. I spent quite a long time learning how to do this.” He responded.
It was a bit strange to hear Nir’s voice without the echoey factor it usually has.
“Still couldn’t make clothes.” I noted. “So not quite on dragon level.”
“... I apologize for my lack of skill.” Nir said.
“Nah, it's fine. I can just make you some, but for now.” I quickly searched Storage for some clothes that would fit the tall wolf-man. I found a few things that were about his size, so I took them out and threw them at Nir. He caught them and looked at them.
“They are Agunan’s, but they should fit.” I told the wolf. He wasn’t quite as large as the humanoid form of the fire dragon, but Agunan was the closest in body proportions to the wolf, so they’ll have to do until I can get something made for Nir.
And since they were made for a dragon, they have a tail hole.
It took Nir a bit of time to get clothed but after he did, he looked very sophisticated.
“Looking good. If it weren’t for the mana problems, I’d invite you to live on HomeBase.” I told him.
“You wouldn’t have done that to my wolf-self then?”
“HomeBase suits most. Massive wolves aren’t most.”
“I jest, Master. I know I am a difficult contractee.”
“Nah. Just a hungry one.” I told him. “Be careful with the clothes. I know they are extra pieces, but I don’t want to see you ripping them to shreds as you transform back.”
“I will make sure they are in as good of condition as possible when we next see each other.” Nir promised.
“I know. And I’ll have something custom made for you when that time comes.” I promised. “... actually, strip. I need measurements.”
“... I just got dressed.” Nir jokingly complained.
“I’ll need them for your wolf form as well.” I told him. “I have an idea for something cool.”
“Then I shall.”
After I got the measurements for Nir, I showed him how to use Teleport to Seal and had him memorize my teleport seals. I also showed him images of the areas I had teleport seals at.
We tested it out by having Nir teleport to the seal near the portal, and he was able to get there. We also visited the Solar Mountain and Himeśaila’s citadel.
Then I made sure Nir got back to the ice lands … I really need to name the two ice areas differently. I made sure he got home, where he promised he’d raise to become the ruler of the lands. I told him to be a benevolent ruler instead of an aggressive one, before I teleported back to the portal and returned to HomeBase.
What do you think?
