CH.621 When Ice is actually Water
CH.621 When Ice is actually Water
With Nir’s insistence, I was ready to melt the not so ice golem.
I had a few ideas, but the first one was to warm up this area. So I could just destroy the ‘field spell’ that was holding onto this area, while also warming the area up.
And as you might know, I have the perfect card for that. Burning Land.
But admittedly, I really didn’t want to use Burning Land unless I absolutely had to. So instead, I decided to go with something a lot less destructive. Spiritual Fire Art - Kurenai. And I know what you are thinking. ‘That damages the opponent. What if you kill the ice/water golem?’
Well, normally that might be a problem, but the monster I’m tributing for the Spiritual Art is Burning Algae. It only has 500 attack, so only 500 damage, but it heals my opponent for 1000 when it goes to the graveyard. That opponent being the golem.
I used the cards, and watched as both the spiritual damaging flames, and the healing flames of Burning Algae, surrounded the frozen golem. The little heat it got from that didn’t seem to do much, none of the ice even melted, so I began to use that combination of cards again, and again, and again.
By the time the golem began to melt, I must have used Burning Algae and Spiritual Fire Art - Kurenai more than 50 times. And it was just starting to melt. The water its body was made out of was still very cold and would likely freeze again, so I kept going with the spiritual arts and algae.
It took another 30 or so copies, but eventually the water golem got warm enough to where its body was clearly emitting steam. It wasn’t boiling or anything, just the cold air coming in contact with its warm body was enough to cause that reaction.
And I think it is needless to say, but I had to use Localized Tornado to reset my GY a couple of times. I don’t have hundreds of copies of every card in my Collection. … though some I do.
I was a little worried while using it, as Nir is my monster, so I wasn’t sure if Localized Tornado would affect him. It did, but Nir was able to resist the effect. Not that either of us knows where he would have ended up if he was ‘returned to the deck’. Probably back into his own cave.
{Grammercy, new Master of mine.} The water golem spoke in the common humanoid language. It sounded quite old, and there was definitely some of the aquatic language mixed in, almost like he was speaking both at the same time. Luckily with my Language Comprehension, I was able to get a basic idea of what he said. {I hast been frozen for long, long time.}
“Of course. I did promise as much.” I answered the golem. “Now, we have a few things to talk about, but first, do you have a name?”
{Name… yes. I had one. I was bid Varuna.} The golem told me.
Varuna, huh? I’m pretty sure that is the name of a water god in Indian, or was it Hindu, mythology. I suppose it kind of fits.
“Varuna, huh? Well, the second thing is how are you here? Who froze you and who sealed you inside an eternal crystal?”
{Freeze … crystal … ahh… the young couple. A hero and her saint companion …} Varuna muttered, but his voice carried clear. {The coast … I was the owner, the lord of the area … The little beasts didn’t like it … couldn’t doth aught.}
As he spoke, the water that made up his body formed into a stage and on the stage, Varuna was putting on a play that showed us what he was talking about.
{Eventually … a hero came … Skilled in both magic and sword … she cut me down and froze me … from then on … I don’t remember much.} He said, as the stage play showed the clash between him and the hero. Excuse me, a hero, not the Hero. After all, he is clearly calling the hero of his story a female, while the Hero is a male.
{The saint … sealed me.} Again, the stage play showed the saint stepping up and praying, as a massive magic circle formed around the frozen Varuna. {Inside the crystal I stood. Frozen, never to escape.}
“... I see.” I said. “... but how did you end up here? From the story, it sounds like it took place in the normal world, not this one. There have never been humans here.”
{Remember that … It was difficult to observe … the world from the crystal … but the waters … told me things.} Varuna said. {They told me of … a great evil … that was ripping the world apart.} Again, the stage made of water showed us things. Raging waves and a person with horns laughing on what looked like the tallest tower of a castle. {The world … ripped apart … I fell through the cracks … ended up hither.}
“Great evil … and ripping the world apart? So the demon lord, huh? When he almost destroyed the dimensional barrier, there must have been a hole large enough for you to fall through.” I theorized.
{I know not for certain.} Varuna said. {I know I simply am. Free now.}
“Yes.” I agreed. “But that might lead to some problems. This area is quite cold. Won’t you freeze again?” I asked.
{Might it happen. Despite all the power of mine, cold isn’t something I easily deal with.} Varuna answered.
“Then we need to have you move.” I told him. “Honestly speaking, I might even be able to bring you to the other side without any difficulties, as you originated from that side.”
{I shall live … where Master wants me to.}
“Don’t worry, we will find a good home for you.” I reassured him.
I know the water god had once been a force of evil against humans, but honestly, I think he has been imprisoned for long enough to pay for his crimes.
{... Aren’t you two forgetting something?} I heard a growling voice from behind me. I turned around and looked at Nir. {We} He pointed his paw at Varuna, {were supposed to fight.}
{Fight … It has been some time.} Varuna said. {This cold … will limit my power … But I shall show you … my power … to impress my new Master.} Varuna said, determination oozing out of his words.
I was about to say that we need to take this outside, but I was too late, as Nir already released his first attack. Like before, when attacking the still frozen Varuna, he formed Rending Claws on his paw and slashed down with it, sending out flying slashes of magic.
Varuna didn’t react to it in time and the slashes landed, but his liquid body quickly stopped them and repaired itself near instant. But some steam did escape Varuna’s body, so he must have lost some heat.
Varuna took his turn to test Nir, forming a spear of water and launching it at the wolf. It moved at a much higher rate than the ice spears he was launching when still frozen, but Nir was still able to disperse it with his Rending Claws paw.
But despite scattering, the water didn’t stop. Instead, it kept attacking Nir, this time as smaller spears, needles if you will, of water.
After one of the needles hit Nir, but did barely any damage, Nir decided to just ignore the rest and charge at Varuna. While doing so, he howled and let out a Wind Magic spell.
It was nothing special, literally just a strong wind, but that wind caused plenty of steam to rise off of Varuna. Steam that soon deposition into ice. Well, snow to be specific. And since Varuna couldn’t control ice, only water, he lost a bit of his body mass.
Varuna pulled back an arm made of water, ready to punch Nir, as Nir jumped towards the water golems … face. Varuna doesn’t exactly have a face in the traditional sense, but his water does show something akin to eyes and a mouth.
Varuna’s fist met Nir’s body, sending the Fenrir flying back. It clearly showed how much stronger Varuna is than Nir, and Nir is anything but weak. Just based on that, Varuna might be as strong as Janina, at least physically.
After recovering from being blown away, Nir sent out some more magic, both magical slashes as well as Air Bullets. Varuna made a wall of water to block them, but each hit still caused him to lose both heat and water, and the high surface area of the wall made him lose even more heat to the environment, so he brought the wall back to his body and just tanked the rest of the magic with his body.
It was clear that it helped him hold onto his water and heat. And it was clear that this fight came down to just that, heat. Will Nir be able to wear down Varuna first, cooling him to the point where he won’t be able to move, or will Varuna land a decisive blow on Nir first.
Varuna launched another water attack, this time in the form of a large ball of water. It moved at a fast speed, despite the fact that it must have weighed multiple tons.
Nir tried to break the water ball with his Rending Claws, but it didn’t work so he had no choice but to run away from it. But the ball split, first into two, then four and finally eight smaller spheres, each chasing after the Fenrir, while shooting him with even smaller balls of water.
The tiny balls of water didn’t do much damage to Nir, but they did get him soaked. So maybe Varuna is trying to also freeze Nir by getting him wet and letting the ambient temperature freeze him. Or he could also be trying to just weigh down Nir to the point where he can’t move as fast. Ice does weigh quite a bit, after all.
After a few more exchanges, it was clear that Nir was losing. He could no longer move as fast, as a decent layer of ice had formed all across his body. He had tried to shake it off, but Varuna piled more water on the wolf, and it kept freezing to his fur.
Nir still tried to charge in, but Varuna gave him another massive punch, sending the wolf crashing into the side of the ice cavern.
Because of that, I decided to step up and call the match.
“Alright, that’s enough!” I told the two.
Varuna simply stood down, gathering all the water he could back into his body, while Nir excavated himself from the ice wall he had been embedded in. He then shook himself to get all the ice that had broken loose because of the punch off of himself.
{No. I can keep going.} Nir growled, clearly ready to continue.
{If he doth lack to, haply thou could lend him some aid, Master.} Varuna said, also ready to continue. He had been talking more ‘modern’ language earlier, but perhaps the fighting had made him go back to the style he was more used to.
“What do you think, Nir?” I asked.
{Grr.} He growled, but he soon lowered his head. {Do it.} He said quietly, but loud enough that I could clearly hear it.
“As you wish.”
It took me just a few moments to find a good card. I wasn’t at all sure if it would work on Nir, but I wanted to try.
“Assault Mode Activate!” I shouted to activate the card, while I of course raised it to the air like the person in the artwork does.
The trap activated and Nir began to glow. It was a bit difficult to see, but under the glow, all the ice that still clung to his body disappeared while his fur was restyled into something even more wild.
But that was just the beginning. As after that, armor made of star titanium began appearing all across Nir’s body. It covered his head, back, tail, legs and even gave him extremely aggressive metal claws.
After the glow subsided, Nir raised his head. He looked extremely regal in his armored form. The shining star titanium armor, while some it lacked the contrast, went extremely well with his silvery fur in my opinion.
Nir performed quick jumps to the left and right to get a feeling for the armor, and I expected to hear some rattling sounds from it, but I barely heard anything. It must have been exceptionally well made not to make a sound at all. As expected of my cards, I suppose.
Nir then faced Varuna, before asking: {Are you ready?}
{Come.} Varuna answered.
Nir didn’t need to be told again. He charged, leaving a trail of glimmering snow in his wake. Varuna reformed his arm, and cocked it back, ready to have his fist clash with the Fenrir.
Nir leaped, still glimmering, and Varuna went for the punch. Only for his fist to sail through the Nir he had attempted to punch, causing the snow illusion Fenrir to scatter into the room.
I had realized that the charging Nir was a fake immediately because of Mana Vision. Nir was actually trailing just behind his fake self in the glimmering snow cloud.
And with Varuna out of position, Nir took full advantage of it. He jumped and slashed Varuna's arm with his armored claws, completely severing the water arm from Varuna’s main body.
Varuna quickly took control of his severed arm, trying to use it to attack Nir from behind. But Nir just kept charging Varuna’s body, and before Veruna could get his attack together, Nir was already inside his fluid body.
I was more than a little afraid for Nir, as Varuna could probably just crush him with water pressure. But before Varuna could do something like that, Nir began to shine brightly. The armor that had formed on him from Assault Mode Activate was especially bright.
And as it was getting to the point it was difficult to look at, the armor exploded, shattering Varuna’s liquid body all across the room.
I quickly formed a Space Wall between myself and the explosion, just to protect myself from getting wet.
After all the water had landed, I looked at Nir. He was breathing deeply, but seemed uninjured. Naturally his assault armor was completely gone, as he had blown it. But he hadn’t received any damage from it, which I was somewhat worried about.
Varuna on the other hand wasn’t doing so hot. Literally.
Because his body had spread out all across the ice room, he was losing temperature fast. A lot of the liquid had already frozen to the ground, and Varuna was gathering the fluid water as quickly as he could.
By the time he was all together again, he was only about a third of the height he started at, and based on things like the square-cube law, he must have lost something like 95% of the water that made up his body in the fight.
But still, Varuna was still perfectly calm and ready to continue, while Nir was panting and likely would go down with one more punch, even from the smaller Varuna. And that is after Nir got the boost from Assault Mode Activate.
So while Varuna might not be the best attacker in the world, he is, most certainly, the best defensive monster I’ve ever seen. And no, Janina doesn't count. She is no monster, she is a dragon.
What do you think?
