Chapter 26 - My Boyfriend is Here to Pick Me Up
Chapter 26: My Boyfriend is Here to Pick Me Up
“Yuwei, let’s have dinner together tonight.”
“Yeah, we’re all new here. It’s good to get to know each other better.”
“I’ll treat you to Western food on Shui Street. I have a membership, so we won’t have to wait for a table!”
“We could go to the Shangjing Hotel too. I’m local, and I can show you the light show tonight!”
At the Qingbei University Medical School teaching building, a large crowd of male students poured out the front doors, full of energy and excitement.
In the center of the crowd walked Chu Yuwei, her brows tightly furrowed.
That afternoon at 3 o’clock, her class had their freshman orientation.
The moment she appeared, the entire classroom was instantly thrown into chaos.
Girls who study medicine were generally decent-looking, but Chu Yuwei’s appearance made the others pale in comparison.
In just one hour of the orientation, the former school beauty of Chengnan gained more than twenty new admirers.
Now, with dinner time approaching, everyone was desperately trying to secure a spot to eat dinner with the campus goddess.
But clearly, Chu Yuwei wasn’t interested in any of them.
She kept clutching her phone, waiting for someone to reply.
But that someone hadn’t been online since after 4 p.m.
Even if he wasn’t coming, couldn’t he at least say so?
And yet, here I am, foolishly waiting.
And what’s worse, I actually obeyed so willingly.
“Chu, let’s go, it’s only ten minutes from here.”
“Come with me instead, that Western restaurant is really famous in Shangjing.”
“Goddesses usually skip dinner. Come with me, I’ll take you to a movie.”
“They don’t even have a car. You should come with me instead.”
Dozens of guys talked over each other, their voices and tones mixing into a chaotic mess that made her head spin.
Annoyed to no end, Chu Yuwei stopped walking.
“Sorry, but I already told you that I have a boyfriend, and he’ll be having dinner with me.”
One of the guys at the front frowned. “I asked a friend from Linjiang, and they said you’ve always been single.”
Chu Yuwei had no strength left to argue. She simply sat down on a bench by the lake.
She was going to wait for that person here, whether they liked it or not.
If they wanted to follow, so be it.
Besides, it was getting dark. With this many people around, she didn’t feel unsafe.
And so, a now-iconic scene unfolded on the lakeside at Qingbei University, a group of male students sat in rows along the walking path.
And in front of them sat a girl as beautiful as a painting, staring at her phone the whole time.
The boys all had a simple idea in mind: Chu Yuwei said she had a boyfriend. That had to be a lie.
If they waited long enough, maybe they could move her.
Even if she really did have a boyfriend, well, watching a beauty for free didn’t hurt, right?
Slowly, night crept in.
The campus streetlights flickered on.
Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed from the other side of the path.
Everyone turned to look.
Under the warm glow of the lights, a figure walked toward them.
“Yuwei, there you are!
“I just went to your dorm, but your roommate said you weren’t back yet.”
It was Zheng Yu, wearing a slightly formal everyday suit, holding a bouquet of flowers and beaming brightly.
He was ready to confess tonight.
Yes, tonight would be the start of his happiness.
The boys sitting on the path all looked on warily.
Was this the boyfriend Chu had mentioned?
“Zheng Yu, didn’t I tell you not to come?”
Just moments ago, Chu Yuwei had been full of anticipation.
But the moment she saw it was Zheng Yu, her eyes dimmed in disappointment.
Zheng Yu, oblivious, smiled. “I get it. When girls say ‘don’t’, they really mean ‘do’, right?”
“You… You think you’re funny, huh?”
“Not bad. Everyone says I’m witty and charming.”
Chu Yuwei was at her wits’ end.
She had rejected Zheng Yu seriously and directly so many times.
But this guy — who knows how his brain works — always thought she was just playing hard to get.
“Come on, Yuwei. I already made a reservation.”
“No. Go back. Someone else is picking me up for dinner.”
Zheng Yu froze.
Did he misread her again?
That couldn’t be right.
He’d bought a book online called Thirty-Six Strategies of Love, and it clearly said: “When a girl says yes, she means no. When a girl says no, she means yes.”
Yuwei told him not to come, so wasn’t that just because she didn’t want him to get tired on the way?
Just then, another guy pulled him aside.
“Bro, come sit with us. We’re in line.”
Zheng Yu sat down in confusion. “Line? For what? What are you guys doing?”
The guy sneered. “You’re here to ask Chu Yuwei to dinner too, right? Gotta take turns.”
“You too?!”
The whole group of over twenty boys turned and looked at him.
Zheng Yu paused, then snorted. “No, you’re all just simps. I’m different.”
The guy looked more amused than offended. “Different how? You got Diaochan hanging on your waist or something?”
“We were high school classmates. We have history. We were almost a thing.”
“Ah yes, the Three Great Delusions of Man: My phone just vibrated, I can turn this fight around, and she likes me.”
“That’s crap! We were almost in a relationship in high school!”
“You had three years and still got nowhere. It’s college now, so what are you bragging for?”
Zheng Yu still didn’t believe them. “Then what are you guys waiting here for?”
The boy glanced at Chu Yuwei. “She said she had a boyfriend. We don’t believe it, so we’re waiting to see.”
Chu Yuwei has a boyfriend?
Impossible.
Last time at the Shangri-La, she clearly said she would never date in college.
Zheng Yu knew her. She was proud like a little princess.
She would never stoop to lying just to reject someone.
So what os happening now?
Who is this so-called boyfriend?
Beep beep beep!
Suddenly, the QQ notification sound chimed.
Chu Yuwei’s eyes lit up immediately.
“Where are you? Have you eaten?”
“I’m just wandering. Haven’t eaten yet. Want to come?”
“Alright. I’ll come pick you up. Wait for me at the gate.”
As soon as she saw the message, tears welled up in her eyes.
It wasn’t that eating with Jiang Zhou was so touching.
It was the situation.
Just moments ago, in front of so many people, she had claimed that her boyfriend would come get her.
If nobody came, she would’ve lost all face.
She would’ve had to slink off, humiliated.
For someone as proud as her, that would’ve been heartbreaking.
“My boyfriend really came! I’m going to the school gate to meet him!
“It’s late, you guys should go home now!”
Beaming with joy, Chu Yuwei waved her phone and ran toward the campus entrance.
Everyone stared after her, curiosity burning.
Who was this person so powerful…
That even their untouchable goddess…
Would run off like a love-struck puppy?
What do you think?
