Chapter 974: Trying To Learn Kalomancy
"So… I heard you want to learn Kalomancy?" Bob asked.
We were already on our way back to Crown Capital City and right now we've stopped to camp on the way to Asttol City at the same place as we had before.
Thus, I took the chance to ask Bob about his Kalomancy magic and to teach me that magic after moving off to a clearing a distance away from the campsite.
I nodded, "Yep. The way you were able to summon so many monsters and of so many different kinds too, that's something I want~"
"But… From what I know, don't you have a loyal army of maids or something? By the looks of it, they're even stronger than the monsters that I can summon."
I nodded, "That might be true but I would like to avoid sacrificing them if I come across a really strong enemy, you know? I would like to have some sacrificial pawns basically."
Obviously, I can do that with my Shadow Guards too but he didn't need to know that.
He scratched the side of his cheek, "I understand. Hmm… The only problem is that I don't really know how to teach it you see… Since I literally just got the skill from the Gods that brought us here."
I tilted my head at him, "Huh? Don't you still need to understand how to use it anyway? It's not like it's instinctive right?"
"Well… I think I kind of skipped the first step because I am literally just using it instinctively."
"Eh? Really? Don't you need to chant the spells or something?"
He gave me an odd look, "Chant spells? What do you mean by that?"
Now it was my turn to give him an odd look, "What? Do you not chant spells when you're using your magic?"
"Huh? No? I just… Kind of think about the spell I want to use to cast it?"
Eh? Wait… I thought it was normal for people to chant spells in order to cast them?
"Have you been able to do this from the start?" I asked.
"Err… Yes?"
"Do you suddenly get a spell chant pop up in your mind when you want to cast a spell?"
He opened his mouth before pausing for a moment and then shutting it.
Then his eyes widened and he let out a gasp, "Wait! So that's what they were! I thought that they were just some kind of special notification about gaining a new spell or something!"
I held up a hand, "Wait… So you're able to just cast a spell without even using any chants?"
"Yes… Is that weird?"
"Yes, it is weird. You really didn't know?"
"Do you need to chant to cast your spells?"
I scratched my cheek, "Well… I don't need to either… But if I'm not wrong, the common sense of this World basically says that it's a given to chant spells to cast magic. When I tried to use magic without chanting, people pointed out how weird it was."
"Hmm… Maybe it's an Off-Worlder thing?"
"I've met other Off-Worlders who also need to chant though?"
"Then… Perhaps it's because my Kalomancy is at tier four?"
"I've also met people with tier four skills and still doing chants…"
He shrugged, "In that case, I don't know what else to tell you… But this is what I've been doing the entire time though…"
Hmm… This is definitely odd… Perhaps I may not be as special as I thought? Maybe one needs to fulfil certain conditions to be able to do chantless casting and I somehow manage to do it accidentally?
Putting that aside for now…
"So let's just try the Kalomancy magic first! How do you do it?"
He scratched his head, "Hmm… If you're asking about summoning monsters, then you think about the monster and then you go huaaa! Then you get a whoosh feeling inside your stomach area and all you need to do is project that feeling out like haaaa!"
…
Oh gods, he's one of those people…
"Can you err… Explain it in more technical terms? Instead of those feelings type of explanation?"
"Ugh… I never really had to teach anyone before and as I said, this was all instinctive to me so it's not like I completely understand what the heck I'm doing in the first place. Let me think… How about I demonstrate to you and you just see what you can understand?"
"Better than nothing I suppose? Go ahead."
He nodded before turning to point his palm at the empty space in front of him before closing his eyes to concentrate.
A short moment passed before a crystal formed in front of him and I narrowed my eyes at it.
When the other Off-Worlder was summoning monsters, these crystals also appeared before they were changed into monsters. What are they supposed to be?
Before I could get a proper look, the crystal burst into light and expanded into the shape of a figure.
I had to look away to avoid being blinded by the light shining from it.
When the light subsided, I found myself looking at what was undoubtedly a goblin.
The goblin looked up at Bob with a curious expression but did nothing else.
Bob turned to me, "What do you think?"
I thought about it for a moment, "That crystal that appears before the monster materialises… What is that?"
"That? Err… I'm not too sure either to be honest. It seems like it comes as part of the spell or something?"
Hmm… Hold on…
I turned back to look at the goblin, "Hey… What would happen if I attacked the goblin?"
"Huh? Well, I'm controlling him now so he would just take it I guess?"
"There's no backlash or anything right?"
"Aside from me wasting my mana? No?"
Alright then~ Let me test this out.
I pulled out my Light Sword and slashed off its head, the goblin not even reacting to my attack even though I made my intentions clear by pulling out the sword slowly and adopting a stance in front of it.
The body wobbled for a moment before dropping on the ground, the corpse hitting the ground with a low thud.
I then went ahead to carve open its body and sure enough, there was a Mana Crystal in there.
But when I reached in to try and take it out, the crystal shattered and the body turned into light particles and disappeared.
Huh?
The monsters that I killed back at the bandit fort didn't disappear like this and I even managed to harvest some Mana Crystals from them too. Why did this happen?
Bob scratched his head, "Yeah… I think I know what you're thinking… I tried this myself too but a newly summoned monster ends up like that after getting killed. If it's left for a while though, they still remain after being killed but the timing seems to be quite different for each monster. Goblins need like a few weeks I think? Or else the Mana Crystal will shatter and the body disappears."
"Does soul binding them make a difference?"
"That doesn't change anything as far as I know."
Huh… I mean I already knew that the body disappeared but I thought maybe being soul binded was what changed it but apparently that wasn't the case.
So it turns out all it needed was time, huh?
Hmm… I think I kind of understand…
"So basically… These newly summoned monsters need time to stabilise or something? Or maybe calling it fully materialise might be a better term for it?"
Bob shrugged, "As I said, I don't know the details. I only know that I can do this and the spell does that, that's all. All the theory and what not behind it is lost on me."
I guess this is what happens when you are given a power instead of earning it yourself. If I want to learn more about it, I might only be able to do it in school… But that would have to wait until I attend the main Aerialla Academy I suppose…
But that's not stopping me from doing some experiments on my own.
I already have a theory that the crystals I saw were basically materialisations of Mana Crystals that would be inside the monster, so basically what the spell does is turn mana into a Mana Crystal before forming the monster or creature around that Mana Crystal itself.
So if I were to just try and do that…
Err… Actually… How do you turn mana into a physical Mana Crystal? I know how to transfer them out of one but to turn them into Mana Crystals… I have no idea how to do that…
I turned back to him, "Could you do that spell again? I think I'm on the verge of understanding how to do it."
"Oh, err… Sure. Give me a moment."
He used the spell again and I watched closely as the crystal appeared once more trying to sense anything I could about it that might tell me how to do it.
…
…
Yeah I have no clue.
What do you think?
