Chapter 44 44: Rough day?
It took only one knock for the door to be opened for Alix. As she was walking in, Xiaobo was walking out with a sulky face.
It made her wonder what had brought that frown on his face.
Had Caishen scolded him?
"Sit down." He told her.
She sat down and her eyes curiously roamed around as it was her first time inside of his private office.
His desk was large and brown, with only a medium sized black computer monitor and a lap top.
Don't those two perform the same function? She asked herself.
He had a large shelf that had models of houses, buildings, a builders helmet, books on architecture, business and history. And one surprising book on classical music.
Was that given to him by Lin Billi, she wondered. Had Lin Billi been to this house before? What did she do when she was here?
She dismissed those thoughts quickly, jealousy was an ugly trait. She went back to looking around his home office.
It was really spacious, quite comfortable and it smelled wonderful, the same smell which she smelled in the bedroom.
"You look tired." He said.
She looked away from the shelf and her eyes moved to him. He had noticed that she looked exhausted but forgotten about himself.
He had not yet showered or changed out of the suit he left for work in. All he had done was loosen his tie and take off the coat.
"I would say the same about you." She told him.
His eyes were slightly red and lines of exhaustion creased around his eyes.
"Rough day?" She asked him.
He nodded, agreeing to her presumption.
"I think I should share some things with you before we...uhm. Never mind." He sighed and paused.
Then he said, "I cannot tell you much but I think there is more to my accident than meets the eye.
I found out today that someone gave me poisoned medicine as well to sabotage my treatment and worsen my condition. Actually it's the black cat that alerted me to the poison.
I am telling you this because I do not want to put your life in danger unknowingly by virtue of being my wife. I will understand if you choose to terminate this marriage of course and I will not blame you in any way for taking the proper steps to protect yourself.
But since we have a deal in place as you promised to share the treatment of your fingers with me I am going to suggest an alternative plan."
He extended two documents to her which she perused through.
One was a divorce agreement, which he had signed already. He was offering her alimony of fifteen million.
Another was a proposal in which he would pay her fifty million altogether if her treatment cured his legs.
The payment would be made in installments, ten million when feelings in his legs were restored, ten when he stood up and thirty if he walked again.
Caishen looked down at his table and picked up a pen which he wanted to give her so that she could sign the documents.
The sound a paper being ripped made him lift his head without getting the pen.
Alix, to his surprise was ripping up the papers he had given her.
"What are you doing?" He asked her.
He was expecting her to sign them, not rip them apart with that petulant look in her eyes.
He was doing this for her good, what exactly was she thinking?
She placed the torn pieces of paper on his desk, dumping them there like trash.
"For better or worse, in sickness and in health. Those are the vows we made to each other. The vows you made to me on the day we got married.
What kind of wife will I be if I run away from you at a time like this? Do you think that I am so shameless to take your money and just go? Also what makes you think that whoever is after you will spare me just because I am your ex wife not your current wife?
I would rather stay with you because I know that you will protect me than strike out on my own and live like a sitting duck that could be taken out at any moment.
Forget the divorce, it's not happening. And your treatment, I never asked you to pay me for it."
Caishen could not help wondering if she was stupid or simply insanely in love with him as she claimed to be.
What kind of person turned down all that money?
He was offering her seventy five million altogether, an amount which would change her life in ways she had never dreamt of. She could do anything, go anywhere in the world and live as a rich woman for the rest of her life!
"Miss Lin..." he called, speaking to her formally.
"Alix." She said. "You should continue referring to me as you usually do. I told you, you can only divorce me if I am physically unappealing to you. Aah, we should add an infidelity to that list. If you dare to cheat on me I will leave immediately.
If I ever do the same to you can take similar steps. Other than that, you are not getting rid of me that easily. Zhang Caishen, I have no plans to walk out on you and our marriage."
He is a man who had offered her fifteen million as alimony when they had been married for less than a week. He took her shopping and spent money on her he needn't have.
He sent her a bodyguard to protect her, a personal driver because she couldn't drive. He sued the reporters that assaulted her in front of the building. In addition to that, he prepared a whole music room for her in his house.
He was raising the son of his busy brother, something his mother could do but for some reason didn't.
She had a feeling that if she told him about the eviction notice, he would find her a new place immediately.
To her, he was a good man. She was not in love with him as she claimed but she didn't dislike him either. Rather than waste her time with scumbags like Wei Tao, this man was a better option for her.
"Thank you for being honest with me about your situation. I will take better care in future to ensure that I am safe at all times. Hey, who knows, maybe I will be the one to protect you." she made a light joke and laughed.
She stood up and said softly, "It's time for dinner, Xiaobo must be alone at the table so we should go and eat."
What do you think?
