Chapter 3: Ghost in the Crowd
9:10 AM – Mumbai Institute of Technology
The classroom buzzed with chatter, but Steve sat alone in the back row.
His face was cold. Blank. Focused.
To most, he was just another quiet, average student—someone who blended into the background like worn paint. But inside, his mind moved like a machine—calculating, planning, observing.
Around him, laughter echoed. A group of boys discussed gaming strategies. Two girls giggled over Instagram reels. The professor’s voice was just noise in the distance.
Steve wasn’t here to make friends.
10:40 AM – Campus Lawn
He sat under a tree, tapping through news articles on his phone, keeping tabs on global science developments, defense deals, and economic patterns.
Everyone else was talking about memes.
He watched from a distance as Aanya passed by—a girl with soft eyes, sharp wit, and a voice that once made his world feel alive.
She was laughing with a guy from another department.
Steve didn’t move.
She had left him six months ago. No goodbye. No closure. Just a message: “We’re too different, Steve. You’re... cold.”
Maybe she was right.
But Steve hadn’t cried.
He hadn’t begged.
He had just... shut off.
And buried the pain beneath layers of steel.
12:00 PM – Cafeteria
He stood in line with a ₹20 coin in his hand, debating between a samosa or skipping lunch again. His stomach grumbled.
At the counter, the cashier said, “No change for ₹20.”
Steve nodded and left. No complaint. Just silence.
Back at his table, he sipped water from a cracked plastic bottle.
No one joined him.
He wasn’t the guy people sat with.
He was the loner with a sharp gaze and no past anyone could remember.
2:00 PM – Classroom Lab
His mind snapped into focus as he connected the circuit on a microchip board.
“You’re wasting your time,” his professor had once said. “You’re brilliant, but you don’t collaborate. You won’t survive in the real world alone.”
But Steve wasn’t planning to survive.
He was planning to dominate.
And collaboration? That was for people who didn’t have a system whispering secrets of future tech in their mind.
4:00 PM – Back in His Room
He sat cross-legged on the floor, opening the interface again.
System Online. Modules Unlocking Gradually… New Section Available: Trade | Research | Storage
Steve’s eyes lit up.
He tapped into Trade—but most items were still locked.
Unlock Requirement: First sale to be completed. Current Funds: ₹11 Hunger: 48% Status: Low Energy – Efficiency Reduced
He lay back against the wall.
“I’m nothing now,” he murmured, “but I won’t stay nothing.”
He stared at the cracked ceiling, his expression calm.
Not because he was content.
But because he knew—
The world wouldn’t laugh long.
What do you think?
