Chapter 10 - The Contact from the Motherland
Chapter 10 The Contact from the Motherland
“Lo Ge, are you planning to re-establish the rules?”
Pig Oil Kid, while driving, asked from behind Lao. As Lao’s most trusted subordinate, Pig Oil Kid’s loyalty was beyond question. Many of the things Lao couldn’t handle himself, he entrusted to Pig Oil Kid, who had never disappointed him.
Hearing the question, Lao smiled and nodded.
“Yes, they’ve gone too far.”
“Hong Kong Island needs development, and people want to live normal lives. These people must be removed.”
Lao’s words made Pig Oil Kid pause for a moment, reflecting on the time when they were both younger and ambitious, trying to change society.
But after years of continuous setbacks, they had come to terms with reality and been assimilated by it. Pig Oil Kid hadn’t expected that after all their success, Lao would return to his original ideals. It made him feel conflicted and he unconsciously gripped the wheel tighter.
“Lo Ge, do you think we can go back to how we were?” Pig Oil Kid asked in a hoarse voice.
If the gangs of Hong Kong Island were ruthless, flattering the powerful and oppressing the weak, his hands weren’t much cleaner. Without bloodshed, how could you be seen as one of their own?
“Don’t worry, I’m here,” Lao’s voice came from behind, full of confidence and calm.
Hearing this, Pig Oil Kid couldn’t help but smile, his worries dissipating. That night, news of Lao reshaping the underground world’s order spread across Hong Kong Island.
The moment Xiang Yan of the Yian Association returned, he called a meeting with the heads of all the gang branches. Everyone had different reactions to the unexpected claim of Kowloon, but most were excited.
The Yian Association officially stated that they would give the Digital Gang a week to prepare for their withdrawal from Kowloon. When the Digital Gang received this news, they were nearly furious. Many of their heads wanted to go to war with the Yian Association!
On Hong Kong Island, if there was one gang that prided itself on being ruthless and aggressive, it was the Digital Gang. For them to hand over Kowloon, which they had controlled for years, without a fight seemed out of the question.
Kwun Tong was a poor district with little benefit to them, especially compared to Kowloon. But, after Li Tai of the Digital Gang emerged, the planned uprising was suddenly called off. Incredibly, the Digital Gang actually began preparations to withdraw from Kowloon!
Seeing this, the Yian Association became even more thrilled and emboldened. Kowloon was considered prime territory, much like the previous struggle between the four great Inspectors. Now, within the Yian Association, there was fierce competition to take control of it.
Whoever could take charge of Kowloon would become the most powerful person within the Yian Association!
On the other hand, Ah Hao, after seeing the Digital Gang’s reaction, no longer paid any attention to them. He had promised Lao and, that night, gathered his best men to head to the Golden Triangle.
The Ma Brothers had already gone there several days earlier, and delays could bring about unforeseen problems. Lao made a simple move, and Hong Kong Island was thrown into turmoil.
Even the powerful figures behind the gangs were quietly watching the storm unfold. But Lao, having initiated it all, didn’t even look back after leaving. He only waited until the next evening. Pig Oil Kid arrived precisely on time, bringing Lao to Victoria Harbour, where a yacht was docked.
When Lao appeared, someone immediately came to greet him. Though Pig Oil Kid had brought a gun and intended to accompany Lao, Lao left him behind and boarded the yacht alone. Soon, the yacht left the harbor and headed for the open sea.
“Lo Ge, I know it’s a bit troublesome for you to come all this way, but you must understand,” Huo Dong said after Lao boarded the ship.
Lao understood why Huo Dong made things so complicated; it was because the people on board were no ordinary individuals.
After entering the cabin, Lao saw the people sitting inside. The man in the middle, though his clothes were old, looked clean and sharp, wearing a smile. The others around him sat straight-backed, hands placed neatly on their knees.
“Hello, Mr. Lei,” the man said.
“Let me introduce myself; my name is Yang Xu, from the Beijing Office.”
After a handshake and polite introductions, everyone else in the cabin left. Since Lao had come alone and wasn’t carrying weapons, both Huo Dong and Yang Xu felt no need for others to stay. It would look like they lacked the courage to face Lao.
Yang Xu first expressed his gratitude to Lao for the support to the motherland, calling it a timely contribution. Then he asked Lao why he chose to help the country. This was the question that both Huo Dong and the people in Beijing were most curious about.
“First, I truly believe in the potential of the motherland and see its future prospects.”
“Second, as the old man once said, Hong Kong Island must be reclaimed. I knew he meant it.”
“Third, I still have some passion left in me.”
Lao started with the practical reasons, then spoke from the heart. They were all adults here, especially considering Lao’s past actions on Hong Kong Island.
If he had directly claimed to be doing it all for the country, ten out of ten people would have doubted him. So, Lao wisely framed it from the perspective of the country itself.
While there were people inside the country who were uncertain about the future, the leadership had always remained resolute. Yang Xu, having been with the leadership for a long time, understood this well.
While Huo Dong had helped the mainland for national reasons, there was no denying that he also had investments in mind. The leaders didn’t mind that, because in the long history of China, such things were not uncommon.
Helping others in times of need wasn’t just for their good—it was an investment for the future, when they could return the favor.
“I understand what Mr. Lei means,” Yang Xu said.
“However, from a personal perspective, I’d like to give you a word of advice.”
“The country will appreciate your help, but you must keep your hands clean.”
Yang Xu didn’t say more, but Lao understood his meaning clearly. Lao had been preparing for this very aspect. What he wanted wasn’t just to show his good intentions. He wanted to take the relationship to the next level. So, Lao directly extended an invitation to Yang Xu.
“Huo Dong has already been targeted by the British authorities. Many things can’t be done openly.”
“But now that I’m here, we can coordinate both inside and out.”
“I’m currently cleaning up the underworld forces on Hong Kong Island, and you can take advantage of this opportunity to send people in…”
Lao spoke calmly, while Yang Xu and Huo Dong immediately became serious. Hong Kong Island was a gateway to the Far East, with trade flowing through it that could radiate across much of Asia.
If the mainland could insert people into this space now, they would gain significant advantages. Sometimes, even just information could make a huge difference.
The gravity of the situation caused Yang Xu to breathe more quickly…
What do you think?
