Chapter 383 383: The Gains from the Smuggling Case, The Gathering
Special Investigation Team, Group Leader's Office.
At this moment, the Group Leader's office no longer has the all-exposing look it had in the beginning. It's filled with items like a desk, a computer, chairs, a bookshelf, and a small sofa.
There's also a green plant in a corner of the room whose name Luo An doesn't know; it has become very yellowed due to a long time without water.
Luo An himself prefers cleanliness, so the documents on his desk are always in good order.
Usually, when there are no cases, Luo An would pour himself a cup of tea, turn on the computer, cross his legs, log onto online forums to post and chat, starting to blatantly slack off as if exacting revenge.
However, today Luo An isn't slacking off. He's called Michelle into the Group Leader's office because there's an important matter he wants to ask about:
"Michelle, has the haul from that smuggling case been tallied up yet?"
"It's all been accounted for."
Michelle nodded, then tilted her head and thought for a moment before responding:
"In that warehouse, amidst the movie props, we have seized a total of 370 kilograms of marijuana, 90,000 tablets of ten milligrams each of oxycodone, 110,000 tablets of eighty milligrams each of oxycodone, and 190,000 tablets of Taylor's containing a large amount of hydrocodone, with a total estimated value of about 14 million US Dollars.
Additionally, Chenier managed to interrogate Cred and learned about another warehouse, which also held a small amount of marijuana leaves and a large quantity of oxycodone and other pills, with an estimated total value of about 10 million US Dollars."
Luo An's eyes lit up. It had been stated before that the FBI regulations stipulate that the investigation team cracking such cases can receive a certain percentage of rewards afterward.
Due to the high danger factor of sole product cases, this percentage stands at 14.5%, whereas for smuggling cases, it is slightly lower, only 9.3%.
The year Luo An is in now is 2005, and it's a little more than a month until 2006.
A bottle of ten-milligram oxycodone tablets has a wholesale price of nearly 100 US Dollars. As for the tablets with the highest dose of eighty milligrams each, a bottle will cost six to seven hundred US Dollars.
The prices are quite hefty, but at this point in time, oxycodone was still a pain relief legend on the federal market, with lax regulation, and wasn't considered a sole substance with high addiction potential by law.
It wasn't until 2016 that oxycodone was brought down from its pedestal and recognized as an opiate-containing, opioid medication, being both a pharmaceutical and a narcotic.
Therefore, the batch of pills seized by the Special Investigation Team this time can only be considered part of an ordinary smuggling case, not a sole substance smuggling case.
Luo An pulled over a calculator and roughly worked out that the Special Investigation Team's reward from this smuggling case would be about 2.23 million US Dollars.
After Michelle turned and left the Group Leader's office, Luo An, sitting in his chair, muttered a few curses under his breath about those shameless pharmaceutical companies, then pulled over the files to start dealing with the follow-up work for the two cases.
Since he has officially taken over the position as the Group Leader of the Special Investigation Team, there are quite a few more tasks that Luo An must personally handle.
Other routine tasks can be handed off to others in the Special Investigation Team, but matters related to power and money must be dealt with personally by Luo An.
As time ticks away, the end of the workday quickly arrives.
Musso's Barbecue Restaurant.
"Cheers!"
"Cheers!"
In the depths of the restaurant, beside a long table, nine members of the Special Investigation Team raise their glasses to drink together.
Luo An takes a big gulp of beer and smiles:
"These past few days have been tough for everyone, so tonight, eat more barbecue—my treat!"
"Thank you, Group Leader Luo An!"
As Luo An's words fade, the agents' eyes sparkle, and the place immediately fills with a boisterous noise.
There are a few more women at the dining table. Unable to join in, Winslow, Anwar, and Cooper turn around to start chatting with Luo An.
Cooper is a bit younger, not much older than Luo An, and their conversation sticks to cars.
Winslow and Anwar's conversation with Luo An always revolved around marksmanship and close combat.
The scene where Luo An instantly killed three enemies in the sewers left a deep impression on both of them, and Winslow and Anwar always wanted to know how Luo An did it.
"Actually, it's simple."
Hearing this question, Luo An stuffed a piece of grilled meat into his mouth and smiled in response:
"I'm just a little faster than them, and a bit stronger too."
Luo An thought his explanation was clear and straightforward, while Winslow and Anwar were utterly dumbfounded.
The two men looked at each other; this was a restaurant, not a place suitable for a shooting competition, so Winslow drained his glass of wine and looked at Luo An with a challenging gaze, indicating he wanted to arm-wrestle with Luo An to compare their strength.
Winslow and Anwar had already competed privately, and they were evenly matched, but eventually, Winslow slightly overpowered Anwar with his more enduring strength.
As for Cooper, although he also had ample muscles, his strength was only average; the muscles he had developed were more for picking up girls.
"OK, no problem!"
Seeing the expressions on Anwar's and Cooper's faces that anticipated a good show, and Winslow's provocative look, Luo An finished the grilled meat on his plate without hesitation and nodded in agreement.
Seeing this, Anwar and Cooper immediately got up from the dining table to prepare a suitable space for Luo An and Winslow.
Mona, Reesi, Chenier, and Patricia next to them were also drawn by the actions of the four men.
When Mona turned her head and realized that Luo An and Winslow were about to arm-wrestle, she immediately lost interest and turned back to continue discussing the latest women's fashion and cosmetics with Patricia from Hollywood.
Reesi also had little interest in arm-wrestling among men. She laughed at Winslow and then leaned in to whisper with Chenier again.
Patricia and Chenier, however, were somewhat curious about this contest. While chatting, they watched the scene, wondering how long Luo An could hold up against Winslow.
Soon, Luo An and Winslow sat face to face, with Cooper sitting on the side clearing the food from the table, and Anwar acting as a temporary referee. He covered the clasped right hands of Luo An and Winslow, making sure both were ready, and said:
"Three, two, one, start!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Winslow's arm exerted strength instantly, intending to first gauge the upper limit of Luo An's strength before taking him down.
What shocked Winslow was that as his strength kept increasing, he found that he could not gauge Luo An's limit at all.
Until Winslow exerted his full strength and his arm veins bulged, Luo An looked serious, but his arm remained straight without a trace of wavering.
Luo An was a head shorter than Winslow and, although muscular, not as bulky as Winslow. Yet now they were evenly matched, a sight that made Anwar, Cooper, Chenier, and Patricia all widen their eyes in astonishment.
Just as they were guessing how long Luo An could last, Winslow's eyes suddenly reddened, and he fiercely grabbed his own thigh, because he found that Luo An had begun to increase his strength sharply, pushing his hand downwards!
Bang—
A few seconds later, under the astonished gazes of Cooper, Chenier, and Patricia, Winslow's right hand was fiercely slammed down onto the table by Luo An's right hand.
"OK, the competition is over!"
Before a shocked Winslow could react, Luo An pulled out his right hand and pushed a large beer mug in front of Winslow, laughing loudly:
"You lost! Drink up!"
Winslow, who had absolute confidence in his strength, had a look of disbelief on his face. After snapping out of it, he picked up the large mug on the table and drank it all in one gulp, then extended his left hand to Luo An, loudly saying:
"Continue! This time with the left hand!"
With a slight smile at the corner of his mouth, Luo An glanced at Cooper, who was standing by, dumbstruck, next to the three large beer mugs filled with beer, and asked with a laugh:
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure!"
What do you think?
