Chapter 199 199: Good Cop, Bad Cop
He had barely stepped into the camp when a few students came, and intercepted him and the others that he was accompanying.
They were led to a tent, where the second and the third ranker were present.
They were informed of the plan, where they needed to sneak inside the enemy camp and gather information about the whereabouts of Elias Ashborn.
Quite a lot of students that were forcefully selected for this mission, raised a voice against it. None of them were willing to take part in this suicide mission.
Their voices of resistance only fell on deaf years. The only few people amongst the so-called 'losers' that managed to avoid being forcefully recruited, were the descendants of the major families.
Even after they had lost their Summoned Beasts, and were locked down on, they were still given a choice. If they wanted, they could stay out of the mission.
Those that didn't have any significant backing, weren't given any such choice. Hence, only those who came from mediocre families and had lost their beasts, were included in the infiltration group.
Elias was also part of the group, and he also tried to oppose this decision, even if it was just for show. Deep down, he was quite pleased that he was selected.
After all, he was being sent to the enemy territory. As long as he was in the enemy camp, and was 'caught', he had complete reason to reveal his ice phoenix flames.
As for why he didn't use these flames in front of Elias, he thought of a valid reason for that as well.
He had already thought of an explanation for that. The reason he didn't use Ice Phoenix Flames was because he was taken out before he could even use it. It happened so fast, that he didn't even have time to use the flames.
It was also a decent excuse since he had taken out Kaelen almost instantly in that battle, without giving him a chance to even utter a single plea for mercy.
Just as he wanted, their resistance was completely ignored by higher ranks. Moreover, those who made the most noise were also beaten by those from the higher ranks.
One of the boys that kept saying that he wasn't going to take part in this suicide mission, recieved a punch straight to his gut which made him cough blood.
The boy fell to the ground, holding his stomach and groaning in pain. But the punishment didn't stop there. The second ranker also kicked him, making the pain even worse.
"Did you think I was requesting you all? You bastards have already lost to them once. I am giving you one more opportunity to redeem yourself and help our side. And you are still being a coward?"
"You don't have a choice in this matter. This is an order, and not a request. If you think you will die if you go there, then just know."
"If you don't go there, you will definitely die at my hands! If your family has any problems with it in the future, they can come and complain to my family if they dare!"
The third ranker revealed a little more compassion, even though it was only on the surface.
He stopped the second ranker, and said, "Let me talk to them."
He helped the boy who was groaning in pain, and placed a healing medicine in his mouth.
"I am strong, but he is stronger than me," he said. "I cannot stop him if he wants to kill someone. So please don't sacrifice your life. If you infiltrate that place, you still have a high chance of surviving. But if you don't, then you are almost certain to die at his hands."
His voice was filled with kindness, as if he was talking to a friend and trying to help them. But deep down, he was only threatening the boy in the guise of compassion. For Elias, who was watching silently, it felt like a good cop bad cop tactic.
"Will you go to the Enemy Camp?" the third ranker asked as he helped the boy stand on his feet once more.
With no other choice, the boy nodded. It was true that he was definitely going to be killed here if he rejected once more. His family couldn't even raise any complaints if he died at the hands of these people.
At this moment, he was completely regretting coming to this camp after losing his beast. If he had just stayed back, and waited until the test ended, he could have survived until the end. But his greed got the best of him, and he was stuck in this harsh reality.
"Good boy." The third ranker smiled, and patted the shoulders of the boy. He raised his head, and his gaze swept over everyone else. "Does anyone else have a problem?"
Almost every other person lowered their heads. Although many here had a problem with this, but they couldn't raise those problems without being beaten. They could only silently accept this decision, no matter how brutal it was.
"Good. Then it's final. You will infiltrate the enemy camp tonight. And your mission is simple. You just need to find out the whereabouts of Elias Ashborn, and the current strength of the Destroyer Faction."
"When you return alive after succeeding, you will be rewarded heavily. You will personally be granted a high ranking treasure. And you will also be given another opportunity to contract with a Summoned Beast with our help. So I hope everyone gives their all to it."
After getting the stick, a carrot was hanged before them, to give them a reason to come back alive. Even if they were forced to this mission, the top rankers wanted them to give it their all.
For that, they even decided on a reward that they were going to give to the person that could bring the most accurate information without dying.
With so many people selected, they were certain that at least one might be able to return alive, since all of them were given a different route to take during infiltration.
What do you think?
