After not seeing each other for a while, Yugito had become much more restrained. Her mocha-colored braids hung down her back. Her face, once sharp and proud, now looked calm, betraying no hint of her emotions.
Yugito had always been a proud person, but clearly, after two years of being imprisoned, her temperament had softened. She was no longer overbearing or filled with hostility.
"Believe in the Jashin, and I’ll let you out." Naruto said bluntly, getting straight to the point without any unnecessary buildup.
Yugito was stunned for a moment, her pupils slightly dilating. Obviously, she hadn’t expected the beginning of the conversation to be so straightforward. After regaining her composure, she smiled faintly.
"What if I refuse?"
"I’ll take away all the books and entertainment in your room, leave you only food and drink, and lock you up until you die." Naruto replied impatiently, waving his hand dismissively.
Hearing this, Yugito felt a chill down her spine. All the replies she had prepared in her mind vanished like smoke in the wind at that moment.
Over the past two years, she had grown used to passing the time with books and watching videos. The thought of having all of that suddenly taken away, leaving her alone to face endless solitude, was unbearable.
At the same time, she felt a little regretful. She should have started mentally preparing for this. Now, she didn’t dare to test Naruto’s patience anymore. If this was her only chance, losing it would be disastrous.
Yugito remained silent for a moment, glancing up at Naruto’s impatient expression. After weighing her options, as this matter concerns the fate of the second half of her life, she couldn’t stay calm any longer.
"Can I take some time to think about it?"
"Sure."
A little while later, Yugito walked to the front of her cell and, without any hesitation, said, "I’ll agree."
There was no ‘but’, as there was no room for her to negotiate. Naruto simply told her what she needed to do, which is to close her eyes and feel the call of Jashin.
In fact, this was all made up by Naruto. Not to mention closing her eyes, even if she fell asleep, there wouldn’t be any summons from Jashin. It is just a ploy to make her relax.
As soon as Yugito let her guard down, Naruto summoned the system panel.
With a ding, Yugito's personal stats panel appeared. Task Line III showed as successfully bound, and the number of Jashin’s Followers jumped from two to three.
[Nii Yugito]
[Kumogakure - Jonin - Female - 29 years old]
[Jashin’s Follower - Controllable (Options Hidden)]
[Talent: Free Biju Transformation]
At the bottom of the panel was a description of Yugito: [A proud and gentle cat-girl].
‘A cat-girl, huh?’
Naruto took a quick glance and then closed the system panel. Meanwhile, Yugito looked left and right, seeming to feel that nothing had changed.
“Now it’s your turn to fulfill your promise. Let me out." Yugito said, looking at Naruto. To her surprise, Naruto just snapped his fingers, and the prison bars vanished.
However, nothing else changed. Yugito looked around in disbelief. The cell had disappeared, but everything else remained the same. She then looked at Naruto, "Let me…"
"I already let you out, haven’t I?" Naruto looked confused, "You're not locked up anymore. Go wherever you want. I won’t stop you."
"What I mean is…" Yugito opened her mouth, but the words wouldn’t come out.
She knew it was pointless to argue. She had been tricked by this damned, rogue blond! Right now, she wanted nothing more than to go berserk and kill him, but her reason held her back.
Don’t be rash. You can’t beat him.
"Whatever, I’m done with you. You can go." Naruto said seriously, and then disappeared the next second.
Yugito stared at the empty space where the cell had been. The entire seal space remained unchanged, except the cell was gone.
In fact, even without the cell, she still couldn’t escape. This made Yugito wonder if the whole prison had been set up just for this moment, to toy with her.
She stood there in a daze for a while, then returned to the spot where her cell used to be.
On the couch, Naruto withdrew his consciousness.
He purposely left Yugito hanging. A Jonin who had seen death so many times wasn’t as mentally fragile as Ajisai or Yakumo.
No matter what situation she is in, she will definitely choose the one that is most beneficial to her.
Naruto knew it would take time. He didn’t expect Yugito to immediately surrender. He had to find the right moment to shatter her worldview, as only then would she be more receptive.
…
The next day.
"I heard that the Jonin Exams is over?" Naruto asked.
"You’re asking me?” Tenten looked puzzled.
"Well, who else is here? Is there a second person around?" Naruto was speechless. He looked at the confused Tenten, thinking that maybe this Hokage’s secretary wasn’t the brightest.
Under the big green tree near the Hokage Tower, two people each had a popsicle.
A certain yellow-haired man had come up with the idea of using popsicles to get some intel so he wouldn't have to ask around himself. The date for the Jonin Exams wasn’t fixed, and the end date was uncertain, but the Hokage’s secretary should know.
"I don't know either." Tenten said, biting off half of her popsicle.
"You didn’t check?" Naruto was shocked, then turned to stare at her.
"Do I need to?" Tenten was even more surprised than him. She also turned to look at him, staring at him with wide, confused eyes.
Naruto sighed, thinking that he had to patiently explain to her the duties of a secretary. These things were usually done by Shizune, and Naruto had learned them just from watching her over time.
"Oh!" Tenten responded with a look of sudden understanding, looking adorably clueless.
Naruto rolled his eyes, glanced at her and said helplessly, "You’ve already had the popsicle, now go check, and then tell me the results."
"Alright." Tenten stood up quickly. She was always efficient with her tasks. She ran off toward the Hokage Tower but soon came running back.
"Are you asking about Hinata?" She asked with suspicious expression.
"No."
“Liar.”
"Fine, yes, okay?"
"Wait, but aren't you with Ino…?" Tenten stared at him, her mouth forming an 'O' of disbelief, finally putting the pieces together.
"Don’t overthink it. It’s got nothing to do with you." Naruto spun her around by the shoulders and pushed her away, then urged, “Hurry up, hurry up!”
Tenten ran off reluctantly. She had been through a lot with both Ino and Hinata, so her feelings about them were pretty neutral and there are no particular biases.
She returned after checking the documents, dutifully coming back downstairs.
"The Jonin Exams ended today, and I saw the application Hinata submitted." Tenten said happily, clearly enjoying her job as the Hokage’s secretary.
"Did you see the results?" Naruto asked.
"How could I? It’s way too early for that! Last time, I had to wait almost half a month."
"Alright, thanks." With his answer, Naruto turned to leave abruptly, saying, "I’ve got something to do. See you later, Tenten."
Tenten stood there in a daze, suddenly feeling a sense of frustration after being used as a tool.
‘Damn it!’
What do you think?
