The front gate of Konoha were worn and tattered, trampled by countless feet. During the most recent clash with Sunagakure, their forces had nearly pushed into the heart of the Land of Fire.
It was said that Konoha was on the brink of disaster back then, but Sandaime came out with his men to confront them, resolving the situation immediately.
The Sarutobi Clan has more than 3,000 people, so it is not a small clan. Otherwise, with so many people in Konoha, there’s no way Hiruzen was chosen by Tobirama to succeed him.
The Shimura Clan also had a decent number of members, but they were still inferior to the Sarutobi Clan. Back in the day, when the various villages were locked in war, even the Kage had to take the field. It can be said that being a Kage was hardly a peaceful or joyful position.
With so many clans in the village, it was a matter of showing off strength. Each clan would figuratively strip off their shirts to flex their muscles, and among the shorter ones, the tallest would lead.
Hiruzen was the biggest muscle-brother of them all. One look at him without a shirt, and you’d know who was boss. His mindset was always. ‘I’m invincible beneath the Nidaime Hokage, and I grovel above him.’
When the Nidaime Hokage passed on the mantle to him in a critical moment, Hiruzen had no choice but to step up. After all, he was the strongest person in the village after Nidaime, so how could he shy away from danger?
He had once protected his comrades during a retreat under Nidaime’s orders. It was the kind of task that, if he survived, he’d become the next Hokage, and if he died, his tombstone would be placed at the forefront of the Sarutobi Clan’s cemetery.
This was why Danzo could never outplay Hiruzen… he simply wasn’t as clever. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have come up with the ‘Will of Fire’, an ideology that could be passed down through generations, keeping the village’s spirit alive even after death.
Although Naruto didn’t care much for the old man Sandaime, the truth was that the old man was impressive. On the contrary, it was much easier to deal with Danzo, who was shadowy and a loner.
Whenever Naruto decided to get rid of him, it would be a complete takedown, wiping out all of Danzo’s life’s work. Not only would Danzo be physically eliminated, but his entire existence would be erased. After a few decades, no one would even remember him.
For someone like Danzo, who always dreamed of eternal glory, that would be the most unbearable fate.
The crowd up ahead had come to a halt, unwilling to move forward. Everyone was gossiping and watching, some even whistling as if they had never seen a woman before.
Nao stood on a slightly elevated platform near the village gate, where a massive old tree stood, like a small park, which provided shade and provided shade in the summer.
There were usually a few signs posted there reminding people to maintain hygiene. The village was vast and chaotic, with frequent brawls and even deaths from starvation, which often led to disease outbreaks.
She stood there, her dark skirt swaying in the wind, indicating she was there to bid someone farewell. Her pale hands gently tucked her loose hair behind her ear as she leaned forward, scanning the crowd below.
A large group of people suddenly stopped, making Nao Nohara a bit flustered. She took a couple of steps back, nervously gripping the railing as she continued to search for something with bold eyes.
The people of this era had distinctive characteristics: restless and passionate. However, long periods of war and a suppressed atmosphere left many feeling insecure or developing twisted personalities.
There are very few people like Minato who could confidently flirted with women. Most people are very reserved, the kind who clearly want to be in a relationship but are afraid to speak out.
They could only watch as the girl was taken away, cursing quietly in frustration, as if they too had lost something, feeling the sting of rejection.
When Nao boldly scanned the crowd, the rowdy men who had been jeering just moments ago immediately turned bashful, muttering under their breath about who the lucky bastard was to earn such a beauty’s attention.
“Move aside!”
"Why are you pushing? Do you have a death wish?"
"Ouch! Who hit me?"
"Don't look at me, it wasn’t me!"
Naruto, despite being typically low-key, wasn’t one to shy away from moments of parting like this. There is no such thing as feeling guilty and not daring to meet. Since he dared to draw his sword, he dares to be a scumbag.
Once the path was set, there was no turning back. Thoughts like ‘sleeping with someone means taking responsibility’ or ‘staying here instead of leaving’ were out of the question.
They were warriors, after all, so who would believe such hypocrisy?
As the saying goes, either be completely devoted, or be ruthlessly detached.
"Excuse me, coming through." Naruto, unbothered by the fuss, pushed his way through the crowd, steadily making his way toward Nao, who had already noticed him.
In her eyes, Naruto was struggling to rush towards her from the crowd. In reality, he was anything but polite… he kicked several people along the way, forcefully making his way through.
"What are you pushing for? She’s not here for you!" A Shinobi in the front was getting impatient from being squeezed by the people behind him and shouted to the back.
"Who’s the idiot? Someone almost jabbed a stick into my waist!"
The crowd became chaotic, and just as the disorder peaked, Naruto finally reached the front. He leaped onto the platform where Nao stood, and amidst gasps from the crowd, directly wrapped his arms around her.
"Who is that guy? Damn it!"
The scene turned even more chaotic. Someone even threw a kunai, but Naruto, ignoring it all, boldly placed his hand on Nao’s waist and kissed her in front of everyone.
Kunai whizzed past, but Naruto quickly pulled the flustered Nao into a more sheltered spot. Anyway, no one knew him, so he could just show off and run away, which was really exhilarating.
Indeed, no one in the crowd recognized the seemingly ordinary Shinobi who had come out of nowhere and stolen the spotlight. His face was unremarkable, his clothes dirty and tattered. The more they thought about it, the angrier they became, wishing they could have cut him down on the spot.
The three members of Team C17, however, knew Naruto and recognized Kitahiko as their teammate. They stood frozen, shocked that the seemingly average Kitahiko had just stolen Nao away like that.
Nobi didn't react much, but his expression didn't look very good.
"Let's go." He said coldly and tightened the Ninja Tool pouch on his waist.
On the other side, Naruto, now a bit removed from the crowd, casually asked Nao, "Weren’t you supposed to be at the Konoha Hospital? Why are you here?"
"I was worried and bored, so I came to see you." Nao replied dreamily, clearly overwhelmed by her emotions. She looked like someone who had been swept off her feet by love.
She was still a little dazed, feeling like her mind wasn’t working as it used to. The Nohara Nao who once handled things with ease seemed distant, like a part of her that no longer existed.
Naruto had opened the door to her heart, both physically and emotionally. He had ways of comforting people, and he was patient when it came to caring for her.
This kind of contrast was something she had never experienced before. Her heart raced uncontrollably, too overwhelmed to even analyze her feelings properly. She looked up at Naruto with a smile, her mind a haze of confusion and happiness.
Naruto, watching her smile foolishly, gently pinched her cheek and, without batting an eye, lied smoothly, "I’ll be back."
"Is the mission dangerous?" She asked, and before he could answer, she added, "Take me with you. I'm also very strong and I’m also good at Medical Ninjutsu."
"No need, just stay safe in the Medical Department." Naruto said, brushing the hair blown by the wind from her face. His eyes were filled with what appeared to be deep affection, though in truth, everything he looked at seemed that way.
Whenever he was lost in thought, his mind would wander, and his eyes would lose focus.
"Mhm, I’ll wait for you to return." Nao was completely soothed by Naruto’s words. Before he left, he even gave her a playful pat, earning a shy slap from her as her face turned red.
He then disappeared back into the crowd in a few swift jumps.
Kitahiko would indeed return, probably in the form of a corpse. Naruto hadn’t promised that he would come back himself, and as for the result, well, who knew?
He simply had a habit of not making promises he wasn’t sure he could keep.
What do you think?
