There are four people in Team C17 on the mission this time, including Naruto, Yamashiro Nobi, whose strength was still unknown, and two other dirt-covered ‘lucky stars’, Shita and Noma.
Under the guise of Kitahiko, Naruto was supposed to bond with Shita and Noma, who are war orphans like him. However, the two were far too weak to capture his attention.
On the contrary, even though Nobi wasn't particularly friendly toward Naruto and even harbored some hostility, it didn’t stop Naruto from acting carefree and casual around him, pretending nothing was wrong.
Naruto didn’t know the nature of the mission but could tell from Nobi's scowl that he probably already knew the details. This was exactly what Naruto wanted, an opportunity to fake his death and sever any lingering ties.
The mission management office was crowded with people, and Naruto even looked back to make sure he was in the right place, ‘Was this a mission or a battlefield? The place was packed with people.’
"What's going on? Are all these people here for missions?" Naruto turned and asked Nobi.
"Yeah."
Clearly, Nobi had no interest in talking to him, and Naruto wasn’t about to make small talk either. Anyway, he wasn't in charge of taking the missions for Team C17, and all he had to do was stand in line and leave his fingerprint.
While waiting in line, Naruto took a peek inside the seal space. The real Kitahiko had long been pulled out of the Jashin’s Altar by him and thrown into self-exile in the seal space.
Naruto hadn’t deprived him of food or water, but when the mission started, it would depend on his luck whether he could survive. If Kitahiko was lucky enough to survive, Naruto would have nothing to say.
If he died, he could only blame his bad luck. Although Naruto borrowed Kitahiko’s identity, at least he allowed him to live a little longer, which was already more than enough.
The second floor was packed with people, and it was inevitable that there would be friction among them. A group of people on the other side had already started fighting because of the cramped space.
In such a grim time, most Shinobi were short-tempered.
More importantly, none of the people present were fools, and they were roughly aware of their position as cannon fodders. Completing the mission was nothing more than a gamble, relying on the number of people to increase the success rate of the mission.
With death looming over them, tempers flared easily.
The scene was in chaos, and Naruto stood aside and watched the fun with glee. Turning around, he saw a fat man in a silk robe standing on the table, trying to maintain order with a megaphone.
His fat, white face was covered in sweat, which he couldn’t wipe off fast enough.
"Stop fighting! If you keep this up, I’ll have you all arrested!"
Naruto was immediately amused when he heard this, ‘Fools like this who didn’t know how to handle a situation seemed to be everywhere.’
Remembering how this fat man had mocked him disdainfully before, Naruto moved forward with a naughty look.
In the chaos, he stuck out his foot. The fat man continued to yell until a loud crash followed by a yelp echoed through the room. The table had collapsed, and the man toppled into the crowd. Naruto took advantage of the chaos and stepped on him.
Nobi happened to see that scene from the corner of his eye, but he just turned his head away, and said nothing. Perhaps he knew what kind of person Naruto was and didn’t bother intervening.
In the end, the fat man was carried out on a stretcher, barely conscious. The stretcher sagged under his weight, resembling a body bag as it squeaked away.
Shita was nervously studying the mission scroll when Naruto suddenly approached, startling him so much his face turned pale.
"What are you doing?"
"Just taking a look." Naruto replied with a grin.
Shita immediately backed away, joining Noma in a corner to whisper. They concluded Naruto must be a fool to still be able to smile in the face of death.
Of course Naruto could smile, after all, he had already obtained the file he needed. Once this mission was over, Kitahiko’s identity would either disappear entirely, or Naruto would vanish.
If Kitahiko survived, his odd behavior would undoubtedly be noticed, and returning would only mean death.
Before releasing him, Naruto would explain the situation clearly, letting Kitahiko choose his own fate. If he had any sense, Kitahiko would understand he had no other choice and could only become a Missing-nin.
However, in these times, Missing-nin varied in strength, and most of them were no better than beggars. If Kitahiko encountered someone stronger, he’d cower, but if they are weaker, he’d draw his kunai.
The second floor of the Hokage Tower remained chaotic for a while, but things eventually settled down.
Nobi maintained a one-step lead ahead of Naruto the entire time, never looking directly at him. He clutched the mission scroll, which Naruto had already seen. The mission was to head to the frontlines and cut off the rear supply line of Sunagakure.
The task seemed simple, with just a few words, but it involved mobilizing dozens of cannon fodder teams, with a third of them being at Genin level. Only when they arrived at the battlefield would they realize how dangerous the mission really was.
The rear lines of Sunagakure weren’t as empty as they seemed. While there had been minor skirmishes between the two sides, the real fighting hadn’t yet begun. Konoha had suffered setbacks against Sunagakure recently, and this was likely an attempt at revenge.
Whether the mission succeeded or not was another matter, but as long as there was some disruption in Sunagakure’s rear line, the front line would engage.
If both missions succeeded, it would be a significant victory.
If the mission failed, at least it would buy some time for the frontlines. As soon as the people from Sunagakure made their move, the entire situation would become dynamic, with vulnerabilities everywhere.
"Hey, aren’t frontline missions supposed to be done by the Root’s members?" Shita whispered to Noma, lowering his voice as they trailed behind Naruto.
Ahead of them was Nobi, holding the mission scroll by himself, while Naruto walked lazily in the middle. Behind him, the two others nervously murmured to each other.
Just as they were about to leave the village, Naruto noticed some commotion up ahead.
Naruto thought about what he had just heard about the Root, and wondered whether he should mess with Danzo. While killing Danzo would undoubtedly affect the timeline, tripping him up a bit shouldn’t be an issue.
‘Well… Or maybe I can just take advantage of the fact that my body’s biological father (Minato) is about to become Hokage and push for a new Konoha law allowing polygamy in certain situations. After all, the Hokage’s authority was limitless.’
‘Even if it wasn’t completely unlimited right now, with some effort, I could definitely make it so. But first, that old man Sandaime would need to be dealt with, not to mention the Uchiha…’
After thinking about it, he felt it is too troublesome, ‘There was no need to destroy an entire palace just for a single peach.’
"Who is that?"
"Why does it look like Nohara Nao?!"
Noma’s words instantly snapped Naruto back to reality, ‘What is she doing here at this time?’
Naruto quickened his pace, and when he passed Nobi, he saw that his face was a little dark.
"Move aside." Naruto muttered, and directly pushed away Nobi.
Naruto had the odd sense that Nobi’s final glance at him was filled with complex emotions, as if a tangled knot of barbed wire had been carefully framed and displayed in a museum.
What do you think?
