Chapter 165: Apocalypse: Zombie Era (4)
After tidying up, Ji Jiaqi placed the mop on the balcony and sat on the sofa with a pale face, staring blankly.
She didn’t want to recall the appearance of the old lady before her death, but every word and action still flashed in her mind.
Always looking down, with a gloomy face, slowly going downstairs and slowly going upstairs. There was a time when Ji Jiaqi met her while going upstairs. The staircase was narrow, and their arms accidentally bumped into each other. The old lady even glared at her.
Perhaps she had a bad temper or was a recluse, but she was alone.
And she, just killed someone.
“Ugh...”
Lin Shiheng laid on the sofa, watching Ji Jiaqi cover her mouth and rush into the bathroom. Soon, sounds of vomiting and despair emerged from inside.
Anyone who heard her crying would feel that she was on the verge of collapse. However, after Ji Jiaqi finished vomiting, she came out sobbing and found a notepad with red eyes. She began drawing the nearby routes based on her memory.
With the current power and internet outage, although there were candles in the house, she wouldn’t light them until she was sure whether zombies were sensitive to light. She could only do things during the daytime when there was sufficient light
There was still no news from the government. The radio in the house, that was originally used by Ji Hang, was making crackling sounds without any information. Since zombies turn people into zombies by biting them, it’s best to leave the city. After all, one becomes two, two becomes ten, ten becomes a hundred. There was a high possibility that this city would turn into a zombie paradise.Of course, it was too early to talk about these things now. Ji Jiaqi bit her pen and wrote down ‘Clear zombies in the building’ in her notepad with red eyes.
This residential building had one staircase, two households on each floor, and a total of seven floors. Most floors were occupied, but there were very few solitary residents like her and the old lady. Most of them had families, which meant that if one person in a family turned into a zombie, there was a high chance the entire family would be infected.
She lived on the top floor, and the only other person living on the top floor was the old lady. On the sixth floor, there were two households. One was a couple with their daughter studying outside. They were high school teachers and had to leave early for work every day.
The other household sold breakfast. They set up a stall downstairs at 4 o’clock every day. Outside her bedroom window was a small market, and it was crowded early in the morning. If zombies mutated, they would definitely make noise. Ji Jiaqi heard the screams and chaos at 6 o’clock, which meant that the zombie mutation started as early as 5 o’clock. The family on the sixth floor who sold breakfast wouldn’t be at home.
Ji Jiaqi calculated in her mind while drawing the floors from the first to the sixth in the notebook. She marked ‘Temporary Safe’ on the sixth floor.
In the next hour, Lin Shiheng squatted beside Ji Jiaqi, watching her writing and drawing in the notepad. She labeled each resident in the building and roughly estimated the number of buildings and households in the neighborhood.
Ji Jiaqi had a good memory; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to get into a decent university. Especially because she lived alone most of the time, she naturally observed and maintained good relations with her neighbors. Except for the old lady next door, who was too reclusive to interact with anyone, and a middle-aged man on the third floor who gave her an odd look, causing her to subconsciously avoid him, her relationship with other neighbors was harmonious. They would greet each other when they met.
Although deeper connections were absent, at least no one had any ill intentions.
Due to Ji Jiaqi’s cautious attitude, Ji Hang had scolded her several times, thinking it was unnecessary to be so observant of her surroundings. After all, it was the modern era, and everyone just minded their own business behind closed doors. Who cared about neighbors?
Ji Jiaqi patiently explained, but he wasn’t convinced. Being a man himself, he naturally couldn’t understand how a young, beautiful girl without family support lacked a sense of security. This incident only made him certain that Ji Jiaqi was timid and easily frightened, always being excessively careful before doing anything.
It was precisely because of this caution that Ji Jiaqi planned the entire day meticulously, filling three pages of her notepad with detailed plans.
Firstly, she had to clear the zombies from the residential building to ensure that one day she could sleep peacefully without zombies suddenly barging in.
Next, once this step was completed, she would lock the door that had been left open at the ground floor of the building to prevent any incoming zombies.
These were the two steps of her plan, and Ji Jiaqi had written at least six or seven different approaches.
She still had an advantage. Living on the top floor, there was no one above her as the rooftop was unoccupied. The old lady who lived alone next door had also been killed by her. She could carefully clear each floor from top to bottom. If there was any danger, she could immediately run back to the seventh floor. Based on her observations, although these zombies were fierce, their pace was much slower compared to humans. At least they couldn’t run.
In other words, if the situation turned out to be more dangerous than she anticipated and she couldn’t defeat her opponent, she could run up the stairs, hide in her room, and continue using the method she used to kill the old lady to counterattack.
However, there was still a risk. She didn’t exercise much during her busy work schedule, and she was physically weak, making it highly likely for her to get bitten by zombies.
But as long as the zombies weren’t completely eliminated, this possibility wouldn’t diminish. Instead of living in fear while waiting for that day to come, she might as well face the challenge head-on.
Ji Jiaqi had a premonition that this kind of disaster wouldn’t be resolved in a short time. The infected zombies and the fact that radio stations from any country couldn’t be received, all indicated that once it broke out, the impact would be global, not just limited to one country.
As the sky gradually darkened, Ji Jiaqi stood on the balcony, opened the window, and leaned out, looking downward.
This once prosperous city, with countless lights shining brightly like a sky full of stars at night, seemed to have lost its vitality. She looked out and saw numerous tall buildings, but they were all enveloped in darkness.
No, not completely dark.
Some households had lit candles, but they were too few and too far away.
However, these flickering candles brought Ji Jiaqi a glimmer of hope. Even though they were distant and she didn’t know who the survivors were, as long as there were people still alive, as long as she wasn’t alone, it was a relief.
She returned to her bedroom, intending to sleep, but noticed that there was light coming from the opposite building.
The light was peculiar, not like a candle or a flashlight, but more like a room with the lights on.
But weren't the power outages already widespread?
Ji Jiaqi didn’t dwell on it. According to her plan, she would descend to the sixth floor tomorrow to clear the zombies and find out if there were any survivors. Getting some rest and rejuvenating her energy would be beneficial for her.
She had always been someone who would strive to achieve her goals once they were set. Despite the chaotic thoughts running through her mind—Ji Hang taking away all the money without hesitation, the old lady next door, the orphanage she grew up in, the boy with cat ears and tail, and the beautiful Ragdoll cat—she forced herself to sleep.
Beside the pillow, the Ragdoll cat noticed that she had fallen asleep, let out a yawn, and closed its eyes.
He wouldn’t stop her. In this world, one had to stand up on their own to survive.
Starting from the second day, Ji Jiaqi began executing her plan to clear the zombies from the residential building.
As expected, the sixth floor was empty. The two households on the fifth floor seemed to have all turned into zombies, as the doors rattled loudly when Ji Jiaqi knocked.
These two households each had four family members. If they had all turned into zombies, including the children, there would be eight of them. Ji Jiaqi couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous, remembering when she pretended not to hear the old lady knocking on the door. Looking back now, it was probably not that no zombies were attracted to the noise, but rather that it was early in the morning, and they were all locked inside their rooms and couldn’t come out.
Neither of these families had installed anti-theft doors. Judging by the wear and tear on the door, it was only a matter of time before they broke it down and escaped. Ji Jiaqi hesitated for a moment but decided she couldn’t just let it go. Otherwise, she might end up being the one who paid the price when they escaped.
Lin Shiheng stood in the stairwell, looking down, ready to rescue Ji Jiaqi at any moment. He saw the delicate girl walking back and, after searching inside the room for a while, she found a saw...
It was a very ordinary saw, with a wooden handle and an iron blade. Who knows what this girl had used the saw for before, but now she awkwardly held it in her hand and started sharpening it on a whetstone.
When Ji Jiaqi felt that the blade was sharp enough, she went back downstairs.
She first used a kitchen knife to make a cut in the middle of one of the wooden doors. After confirming a hole, she paled, gestured the size of her own head, and drew a circle on the door using the marker she had found in the room. Then, with cold sweat on her forehead, she used the saw to cut along the hole amidst the zombies’ howls.
It was a huge undertaking, especially since she was physically weak and had to remain highly alert to her surroundings. She was afraid that the zombies would break out before she finished sawing. By the time she had completed one circle, Ji Jiaqi was drenched in sweat.
The zombies in the room, eager to rush towards her, desperately started squeezing into the circle. In the end, one male zombie emerged victorious, squeezing his head out of the circle and relentlessly opening his mouth, trying to bite Ji Jiaqi standing in front of him.
Compared to the first time, Ji Jiaqi’s hand was steadier this time. She swung the kitchen knife and fiercely chopped the male zombie several times before finally decapitating him.
Once his head fell and his body slumped against the door, she used the kitchen knife to push his body down and continued to wait for the next zombie.
Although this method was tiring and slower, it was much safer. By the seventh day, Ji Jiaqi had cleared the entire residential building.
Except for the fourth floor, where no one responded to her knocks, and the second floor where a young girl lived alone and responded, there were no more living people in the entire building.
Ji Jiaqi was too exhausted to feel sad. After struggling to lock the main door and handing the key to the girl on the second floor who responded to her, she just wanted to go back and get some good sleep.
However, when she entered the room, she found the Ragdoll cat sitting on the windowsill, looking outside with its tail wagging, as if it was interested in something outside.
Curious, she approached and saw that someone in the opposite building had opened the window and was holding up a piece of paper towards her.
The paper was large, and the writing was big too. The two buildings were already close to each other, and Ji Jiaqi didn’t have poor eyesight, so she could see clearly.
[Do you have any food? Can I trade with you, I’ll give you a telescope...?]
As Ji Jiaqi seemed to have seen it, the person quickly raised another piece of paper.
[l have a generator, crossbow arrows, and water here. I can trade these with you.]
[Please, I’m begging you, I’m really starving!!!]
What do you think?
