Chapter 164: Apocalypse: Zombie Era (3)
On the first day of the apocalypse, many people were caught off guard. Those who had undergone the transformation into zombies did so during the early morning hours. Most people were attacked by their transformed family members while still in the midst of their dreams.
It wasn’t a terrorist attack or a natural disaster like an earthquake or flood. It was a global catastrophe. Even if the government wanted to provide rescue efforts, they had to first deal with the soldiers who had turned into zombies. Therefore, this day became a feast for the zombies.
When screams erupted from an unknown direction outside, Ji Jiaqi’s face turned pale. She pushed the dining table in the living room against the entrance, bracing the door, because there was a zombie banging on it.
The house she was renting was an older type, and the door wasn’t very sturdy when she moved in. Being a girl living alone, she had negotiated with the landlord and installed a thick and sturdy security door in front of the old one. It was this door that prevented the zombie from breaking in when the trouble arrived.
After securing the table against the door, Ji Jiaqi turned around, leaning against the table with an anxious expression. When she heard the banging, she had already looked through the peephole. It was her neighbor outside, an old lady who also lived alone.
Perhaps due to her old age, the old lady had a somewhat reclusive personality. Ji Jiaqi had greeted her several times, but the old lady always ignored her and walked with her head down. However, when she looked through the peephole just now, she saw the old lady with pale pupils, her mouth wide open, roaring and banging on the door as if she couldn’t feel any pain.
Ji Jiaqi had watched zombie movies with Ji Hang before. At that time, she found them terrifying, but she never thought that such a thing would actually happen in reality. But now, it was really happening.
What should I do now?
Just stay trapped inside the house like this?
Ji Jiaqi panicked and was about to bite her finger. But the teenage boy sitting quietly on the coffee table, playing with an apple, frowned and meowed at her, “Meow meow meow!”Only then did she snap out of her daze and turned her gaze towards Lin Shiheng.
The boy sitting on the coffee table appeared to be around 14 or 15 years old. He had light brown hair, fair skin, and delicate facial features that didn’t allow people to guess his gender. Especially his round blue eyes, resembling clear gemstones. Above his head, a pair of black triangular cat ears trembled slightly, eliminating any possibility of people seeing them as fake ears.
Even though Ji Jiaqi couldn’t believe that the boy in front of her was actually Shiheng, his long ears, tail, and deep blue eyes constantly reminded her.
The apocalypse had arrived, and after humans turned into zombies, cats had also transformed into humans.
“Meow!”
Shiheng, in his cat boy form, let out another sound and at the same time, extended his hand to touch his belly.
“Are you hungry?”
With a proud tilt of his head, Lin Shiheng responded in a clear voice, “I am.”
Ji Jiaqi: “...”
So. not only did my cat turn into a human, but he could also speak?
Perhaps due to being overwhelmed by the situation, Ji Jiaqi had even lost the strength to be shocked.
She stood up with a dazed expression, and went to the cabinet to fetch a can of food.
The teenage cat boy followed her with great interest. He walked in a manner similar to humans, but perhaps due to the addition of a long, balancing tail, he appeared graceful and elegant.
In this aspect, he greatly resembled Shiheng.
As Ji Jiaqi pondered absentmindedly, she opened the can in her hand and handed it over.
The cat boy didn’t take it directly but instead brought his face close, as if he hadn’t yet adapted to his transformed hands instead of paws.
He sniffed it, wrinkled his nose, and turned his face away with an expression of disdain.
That meant he didn’t want to eat.
Ji Jiaqi, while still in a daze, slightly regained her composure. Shiheng also didn't like canned food.
She cautiously glanced at the cat-eared boy in front of her and tentatively called out, “Shiheng?”
The cat-eared boy: “Meow!”
That's right, this is Shiheng. Although he’s picky and ignores people, at least he isn’t a zombie and won’t harm me.
After realizing that, Ji Jiaqi held Lin Shiheng’s hand and cried with relief.
Lin Shiheng remained expressionless as he had his hand held.
This is the fourth time.
This girl seems to cry a bit too much.
At first, Lin Shiheng thought Ji Jiaqi was a timid crybaby.
Until he noticed that after crying, Ji Jiaqi would wipe her eyes and start sharpening the kitchen knife.
Before the apocalypse, Ji Jiaqi was a homebody. She had bought a sharpening stone and would sharpen the knife herself when it became dull, saving her a lot of trouble.
But now, after observing the zombies from the window and realizing that hitting them anywhere other than the head was useless, Ji Jiaqi, who had cried four times in just 2 days, began to create her own weapon.
She also knew that even with a house full of food, it wouldn’t last a lifetime. Moreover, she had enough food, but water wasn't as abundant. If she stayed locked inside the house, she would starve to death. It was better to go out and take a chance.
And...
Ji Jiaqi, who was diligently sharpening the knife, turned her head and saw the cat-eared boy looking at her with a tilted head. She instinctively smiled at him.
Shiheng was entrusted to her by Sister Yun, and even in the apocalypse, she would take good care of him.
Shiheng wasn’t a human, he wouldn’t betray her like a human would. As long as she took care of him, he would never leave her.
With full confidence, Ji Jiaqi bolstered her courage and continued sharpening the knife.
Meanwhile, Lin Shiheng, who had suddenly put on a determined expression for some reason, took a bite of an apple and leaned against the window, watching the situation below.
In summary, the situation was very bad.
The zombie mutation occurred in the early morning, and many people were deprived of their lives while they were still asleep. Those who managed to survive were infected with the zombie virus and joined the ranks of the undead.
In other words, there were fewer and fewer humans while the number of zombies kept increasing.
It was very unfavorable for humans.
After finishing the apple, the cat-eared boy accurately threw the apple core into the trash bin. He looked down and at a human being chased by zombies, screaming. In the next moment, the zombie in front of him was tripped by vines that appeared out of nowhere, and the human, stunned for less than a second, frantically got up and fled into the neighboring building.
He nodded thoughtfully.
Superpowers...
It seems they can still be nurtured.
After sharpening the knife, Ji Jiaqi tested the length of the blade and then went to the kitchen to fetch a mop. She made several grooves on it and tested its sturdiness by bending it with her hand. Once she was satisfied, she used wire and ropes she could find in the house to secure the knife onto the mop staff.
Once she made sure it was securely fastened, she continuously waved the new weapon, trying to test if it would loosen due to the movement. This would be her life-saving tool, so she had to be extremely cautious.
Afterward, Ji Jiaqi pushed the long dining table backward, leaving a narrow gap between it and the door. She then gathered all the clutter from the bedroom and piled it under the table to ensure that the zombies couldn’t crawl through. Only then did she turn around to look for Lin Shiheng.
“Shiheng!”
She called out, but didn’t see the cat-eared boy. After searching in a panic, she realized the boy had vanished, leaving behind only an exquisitely beautiful Ragdoll cat on the balcony.
He had turned back into a cat.
After the initial shock, Ji Jiaqi breathed a sigh of relief.
Based on her observations, the zombies only targeted humans, completely ignoring animals. Shiheng, in his human form, was cute and adorable, making people want to pat his head, he seemed completely harmless.
It was better to stay as a cat. He wouldn't be harmed by the zombies. Even if/died at the hands of the zombies, Shiheng would survive.
On the other hand, even if I did die, at least the door would be open, and Shiheng wouldn’t be trapped inside the house waiting to die. He's a cat, and the zombies wouldn't bite him.
With these thoughts in mind, Ji Jiaqi became even more determined in her decision.
She rarely hugged the Ragdoll cat, gently stroking its soft fur, and spoke softly as if talking to a child, “Heng Heng, can you understand Auntie’s words? Auntie knows you can turn into a human, but there are monsters outside now. If you transform into a human, they’ll bite you. If the monsters come in and Auntie isn't here, you should use this cat form to go out through the door, okay?”
While speaking, Ji Jiaqi was worried that the Ragdoll cat wouldn’t understand, so she took it to the entrance and demonstrated several times, pointing at the door.
As she continued to demonstrate, she started crying.
No one wanted to take risks, but she observed that the zombies were attracted to sound. With so many people living in the apartment building and the loud banging of the old lady zombie outside, it would inevitably attract even more zombies if it continued like this.
Her floor was too high to jump down. Instead of waiting for the situation to worsen and being surrounded by zombies outside, it was better to take advantage of her strength while she still had it and find a way out.
After she finished crying, Ji Jiaqi wiped her tears and brought the Ragdoll cat inside before gritting her teeth and slowly opening the door.
Behind that door, there was another layer.
The zombies outside seemed to sense that there was one less obstacle in front and started banging on the door even harder.
—Bang, bang, bang!
Along with the banging, Ji Jiaqi glanced through the peephole to make sure there was indeed only one zombie outside before opening the final door.
As soon as the door opened, the old lady zombie eagerly tried to rush in, but due to the dining table blocking her, no matter how hard she tried to squeeze in, only her head and one hand could make it through.
Her pale eyes couldn’t see anything, but she stared directly at Ji Jiaqi, who was standing not far away. She made animalistic growling sounds from her mouth and waved her mutated, elongated claws toward her.
Ji Jiaqi’s eyes were teary, but she didn’t hesitate. While the old lady zombie was howling at her, she picked up the homemade weapon.
She raised her hand to strike.
Oh, wait, it didn’t land.
Human bones were too hard, and the knife didn’t sever its neck.
Ji Jiaqi gritted her teeth and fiercely swung the weapon several times.
-Thud!
The old lady’s head fell onto the floor inside the house. Her sharp cries went silent, and her body outside collapsed with a loud thud.
Lin Shiheng had already been standing near the bedroom door, peering outside with light footsteps as soon as Ji Jiaqi opened the door.
He saw the beautiful girl crying her eyes out and fiercely striking the head on the ground several times to make sure it was truly dead.
She was truly crying intensely, trembling all over, giving the impression that she was an easy target for bullying.
The easily bullied Ji Jiaqi, while crying, approached the door.
She lifted the head of the old lady and threw it outside, closed the door, grabbed a mop to clean the blood, all in one go.
What do you think?
