Chapter 648: The Truth About 'Her' Death
"Why did you kill yourself?" Noah tilted his head with a half-knowing smile. "From what I have deduced, it was not part of that man's plan, was it?"
"You know about him—" As soon as those words came out of her mouth, Wei Bing slapped her mouth shut, realizing that she might have fallen into a trap and had spoken hastily. "You!"
"So he IS a man, after all." Noah nodded in confirmation that he tricked her into revealing that information. "Now back to the question, why kill yourself?"
"It was not part of the plan, so then why?"
Wei Bing grew frustrated when Noah ignored her reaction and continued asking her the questions she was diverting their attention from.
"You were supposed to marry the city lord of the Great Expanse City, gain his trust while secretly collecting the bodies of cultivators just like the other spies were going to collect the bodies of the mortals in the towns under his rule."
"Thousands of bodies, all in or under the foundation establishment realm, enough not to draw attention in the early stages of your plan." Noah pointed at the pile of bodies behind the woman with his eyes.
"Everything was going as you had planned; all you had to do was just point all the blame at your husband and disappear as one of his victims." Noah pressed on, closing the distance between them slowly. "That's what you planned, right?"
As Noah signaled at the man standing beside him, Wei Bing's eyes wandered towards him, but her gaze fell when she saw the broken look of despair on his face, the look of someone who looked like his whole world had been shattered.
Feeling shock after shock from everything Noah said, she appeared to be entranced for a second. "What are you going on about? What is that man? What plans? I had to fake my death so no blame comes at me."
"No one knew that I was from the Living Dead Sect. We can live even after death, and we also need souls to grow stronger." Feeling Noah's piercing gaze, she stepped back, her eyes darting around.
Noah followed her sight, and his gaze landed on Gu Chen. As if sensing something, a look of realization appeared on his face. A grin broke out on his face. "So that's how it is."
His words immediately made Wei Bing's scalp tingle; she immediately looked away from Gu Chen and glared at Noah, trying to hide her inner turmoil.
"Wha—"
"Your death was not the only thing that got out of the scope of the plan, was it?" Noah cut her off before she could even start with a smug grin. Wei Bing's face paled more than her current state; her eyes widened as the next words left Noah's mouth. "You fell in love."
She was not the only one affected by those words. Gu Chen finally raised his head hearing; his eyes did not go towards Noah; they looked at the woman he loved.
His eyes frantically looked at her as if they were searching for answers.
How could Wei Bing not feel his gaze? She bit her lips in anger and coldly spat, trying not to look at him, "In love? People sure have a lot of free time on their hands. Which mushroom did you eat?"
Much to her annoyance, Noah directly ignored her words and circled around her while speaking, "You fell in love; you got attached to the warmth of the family you had, but you knew your past and your mission were slowly catching up to you."
"You knew that if you gave up on your mission, you would have to face consequences; maybe your family would die." Noah leaned over her shoulder and looked at Gu Chen.
"You could not watch that happen, and you could not bear to live a life like that with the man you had come to love."
At this point, all the defense she had placed on her face broke, Wei Bing's lips quivered, and her gaze fell. She could not bring herself to look Gu Chen in the eye.
"You started to feel like you were dying on the inside, day by day."
Watching Noah tear the woman apart with his words, Xin Yan looked conflicted. She trusted Noah, but she could not understand why he would hurt the woman like this.
He could have killed her with a single slash and ended her life then and there.
Gu Chen had once more gained a flicker of life in his eyes, but there was still a swirl of different emotions in his heart. He could not understand what to feel and believe and what not to.
On one hand, it was clear that his wife was someone from the demonic sect, an ally of the vilest of the vile bunch; just looking at the way she manipulated his life was enough of an example about them for him.
And on the other hand, she was the woman he loved, and he could clearly see she loved him as well.
"So you died to be free." Noah placed a hand on the zombified woman's shoulder and whispered, but his voice was heard by everyone present.
"You could not continue to hurt him and yourself with all the lies and the deeds you were doing in the background."
"You died…" Noah's voice had suddenly turned soft as if he was soothing her, "…for love."
Wei Bing's shoulders trembled for a moment before they stilled; her head stayed down, and she spoke nothing. The silence settled for a few moments before she spoke up; her voice quivered. "…me— kill me."
"Now that you know everything, please free me of this burden." She raised her head and looked at Noah with a dead look in her eyes. "Kill me."
Noah opened his mouth to speak—
Squelch!
A sword made of nothing but dark matter stabbed through and pierced the body; blood dripped from the wound, and a trail of blood escaped Noah's lips while his eyes widened in shock.
"Is that what you thought was going to happen?" Wei Bing's eyes turned livid as she regained her former grin.
What do you think?
