Chapter 99: That's A Soul Wound

Chapter 99: That's A Soul Wound

Ren teleported midstep, appearing in his room in the Underwood manor with Lilith held securely in his arms. Her breathing was shallow, her body limp.

Immediately, Thorn and Elias burst into the room, already notified by Thorn's information gathering ability. They rushed to his side, their expressions filled with worry.

"Lilith!" Elias exclaimed in concern, stepping forward just as Ren carefully laid her down onto the bed.

Lilith's eyes fluttered open, her gaze flickering weakly to Ren. "We're… home?" She whispered.

"Yes." Ren nodded, grasping one of her hands in his. "You're safe."

Elias and Thorn hovered over her, taking in her pale and weak appearance. "What the hell happened to her?" Elias demanded, unable to believe his eyes. The Lilith he had known had never once been this weak before.

"Anders happened." Ren said quietly.

He explained what had been done to her, his rage bubbling with each word. He told them of how Anders had poisoned her, trying to force Ren into servitude in exchange for the antidote.

Lilith's fingers tightened weakly around his own. "Ren… don't…"

"Don't worry Lilith." He smiled softly at her. "I'll fix this. I swear it."

Elias ran a frustrated hand through his hair while Thorn clenched his fists. "We need food." Thorn said after a moment. "Both of you need to eat."

Elias nodded. "I'll go with him."

Ren gave a small nod of appreciation, watching as they hurried out. He sat in the quiet room, the only sound that of Lilith's breathing. He moved to the edge of the bed, running a hand through her hair.

His thought went to the Penny Prince and his smug expression. I'll kill him for this.

He sat there, lost in his thoughts until the door swung open.

His head snapped up and standing in the doorway with a wide grin was Octavian Underwood.

The man said something but Ren wasn't listening. The instant he was done, Ren's body moved before he could think. He seized Octavian by the collar and teleported.

There was a soft whoosh as Octavian pushed him off with a snarl, the both of them stumbling as they appeared in a deserted rose field, roses stretching as far as the eye could see.

This had been one of the fields in the Rosefield territory he'd marked with a coin when they'd passed through. He had intended to come back here one day with Lilith to enjoy the view but right now, it would do for this.

Octavian recovered quickly, chuckling as he stared at Ren. "Heh. So this is how it is. Bringing me to the middle of nowhere."

Ren took a step back, his fists clenched. "You really wanted to kill Lilith in her sleep?"

Octavian rolled his shoulders, exhaling. "Don't act like I'm some coward, Ross. I would've woken her up first."

Ren glared at him, hate rising up to the surface. "Weak." he spat.

Octavian reared back like he hadn't expected that response. "Weak?!" He growled.

"You want to fight Lilith fair and square, don't you?" Ren gritted his teeth. "Then, wait here. I'll cure her and return. Then, we'll see how strong you truly are."

He didn't wait to hear Octavian's response, teleporting back to the manor. For Octavian to have gotten to his room, he had to have gotten past Elias and Thorn.

Rushing out of the room, he saw splatters of blood on the floor and a cracked indent in the wall. Eyes wide, he rushed down the hall to an open door.

Stumbling in, he saw Thorn and Elias laid on two separate cots, a healer tending to them. They were both unconscious but Thorn was bleeding from the head, the healer attempting to stabilize him.

"Fuck!" Ren swore.

Why? Why is everybody so intent on killing us? Why?! Why couldn't they just leave us alone?!

"I'd like to use up three healings." He spoke through gritted teeth and the shadows in the room came alive. The darkness roiled like a storm before the silent healer stepped out of the shadows, sending the healer already present rearing back in shock.

"Leave." Ren told the man who didn't need to be told twice. He bolted out of the room.

Ren watched as the silent healer worked his magic, the blood splattered on Thorn's face receded like time was moving backwards, his wounds closing. A second later, they both laid on their cots, unconscious but fully healed.

"Come." Ren said and turned, not waiting to see if the healer followed. He stepped into his room where Lilith still slept. The silent healer entered behind him.

He didn't waste time, pointing straight at Lilith. "Heal her." He said.

The silent healer stepped forward without a sound and placed a hand on Lilith's forehead. Ren watched with bated breath as the energy from the healer bathed the bed.

A few seconds later, the healer stepped back with a shake of his head. He couldn't heal this.

"FUCK!" Ren swore, grabbing a nearby chair and smashing it into splinters against the ground.

If the silent healer couldn't heal it, the poison affected the soul.

The silent healer raised six fingers to indicate that Ren only had six healings left before disappearing through the shadows.

Ren stood there, just staring at Lilith. He didn't know how long it was before Thorn and Elias stumbled into the room.

"Lilith?" Elias groaned, leaning against the doorframe.

"She's fine." Ren exhaled. "She's resting. You both should too."

Thorn groaned, one hand clutching his head while the other supported him against the wall. "What… happened?"

"I took care of it." Ren answered. "For now, rest."

Both men settled in different corners of the room, sitting down as they all watched Lilith. No one spoke until the moon was high in the sky.

Then, Ren exhaled. He watched Lilith for a few seconds as she slept, her breathing too weak for his liking. He knelt beside her, brushing a few strands of hair from her face.

"I'll fix this." He whispered.

Leaning down, he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead before rising to his feet. Without another word, he left the room and teleported to Anders' mansion.
