Chapter 147: Chapter 146: An Apocalyptic Life from Scratch (20)
“The child must be heavy, I hope you’re not too tired,” Su Shu said with both gratitude and concern.
Li Xiaoxia gave a gentle smile and said, “Not at all, I’m fine. She just fell asleep. I was worried the ground would be cold and the mats uncomfortable.”
Luo Gang sighed helplessly and silently.
Li Xiaoxia smiled contentedly and whispered to Su Shu, “I gave her some milk and biscuits to fill her up a bit, so you can use less formula. Save it, and it’ll last longer.”
“That’s…” Su Shu felt somewhat uneasy.
Having been to the supermarket once, she knew how expensive things were; the snacks were something people bought for their own children. She touched Xiao’ai’s plump little belly, and it didn’t feel like it was filled with just a little bit of food.
Seeing Su Shu’s embarrassment, Li Xiaoxia felt embarrassed herself.
“I saw she liked the snacks, so I let her have a bit more. It won’t cause any trouble, will it?”
“Not at all, children are always greedy,” Su Shu said with a smile.
Upon hearing voices, Xiao’ai, still half asleep, opened her eyes and saw her Aunt Su Shu. She extended her chubby little arms, wrapping them around her neck and nuzzling against her like a little puppy.
“She must be really tired,” Li Xiaoxia laughed.
“Mhm, feeling sleepy after eating is normal.”
Su Shu turned and touched the bedding, indeed it felt a bit cold. If she just put the little girl in there, she would surely wake up from the cold.
For the time being, she placed her on her back, covered her with another side, took a palm-sized hot water bottle out of the box, filled it with some hot water, and threw it into her bedding to warm it up. After a while, she put the little girl inside.
After getting everything sorted, Su Shu finally had time to eat something.
The Luo Family was eating dinner too.
Li Xiaoxia said, “I’ve filled the hot water bottle, do you have any? If not, we have some here.”
“No need, no need, I still have some. It’s enough for making her formula in the morning,” Su Shu reassured.
“But what will you eat?” Li Xiaoxia was still very concerned about her, a single girl living alone.
Su Shu chuckled and pointed to the bread next to her, “Since it was provided, I might as well eat it.”
Li Xiaoxia glanced at the two dry pieces of bread by her side and frowned, “Is that all you’re having?”
She was thinking of giving Su Shu a box of instant noodles from her own supply, but Su Shu was quicker.
Su Shu was worried that Li Xiaoxia’s “kindness” would go so far as to give her their food, so she quickly took out a can of eight-treasure porridge and a packet of cooked food from her backpack.
“I have food, really,” she said.
Seeing this, Li Xiaoxia put back the beef noodles, feeling relieved.
“Don’t starve yourself being so young, if something happened to you, what would become of the child?” Li Xiaoxia advised.
“Right,” Su Shu agreed, exhaling a breath of relief inwardly. Excessive kindness can be burdensome too.
However, she also knew that in the eyes of those with good hearts, she and Xiao’ai seemed especially vulnerable.
It was rare for people to want to look after them a little more.
At this time, many people were eating.
The first group of people brought to the settlement had come prepared; aside from those who, like Su Shu, had moved ahead of the disaster days in advance, most had fled the floodwaters as quickly as they could.
Before leaving their homes, many people packed their valuables; others were too panicked to worry about belongings – being alive was fortunate enough. Some, on their flight, unwittingly picked up someone else’s bundle, coming upon valuables by chance.
Observing those around her, Su Shu noted that most people felt empathy for one another. If they could, they were willing to share any excess food with others.
What do you think?
