Chapter 146: Chapter 145: An Apocalyptic Life from Scratch (19)
Luo Gang looked at Su Shu to gauge her tolerance.
Su Shu also deliberately observed his attitude. If Luo Gang found it troublesome, then she wouldn’t buy, just to spare him the embarrassment. But it seemed he had decided to spend the “unjust money”.
So, she said to the shopkeeper, “Buy.”
“Buy,” Luo Gang echoed afterwards.
The shop owner clicked the mouse a couple of times, killing a few small fry on the screen, and then shouted at the top of his lungs, “Damn it, send someone down to carry the water! Are you all dead?!”
The roar, as loud as a lion’s, was extremely uncomfortable to Su Shu’s ears.
Soon, a yellow-haired teenager, around seventeen or eighteen, came running down the stairs.
“Brother Cao! Coming, coming!”
“Here, go and fill the bottles for them. The money you get is for your mahjong spending,” said the fat man called Brother Cao. He inhaled deeply and continued to stare unblinkingly at the dazzling battlefield on the screen.
“Aye, thanks, bro! You’re really like my own brother. I just lost a round as the banker and dropped almost everything, even my shorts!”
“Get a move on and do your job!”
“Come on, this way,” he called out to Luo Gang and Su Shu.
Luo Gang’s water bottle was soon filled. He brought an old hot water flask which looked a bit old and seemed to have been scrounged from somewhere, and it cost him several hundred yuan.
Su Shu’s water flask was much smaller. As the yellow-haired lad filled her bottle, he took an extra couple of glances at her face.
In his eyes flashed amazement, and his gaze was presumptuous.
Su Shu stared at him coldly, “It’s scalding.”
No sooner had she spoken than the yellow-haired lad indeed wasn’t careful while pouring, scalded himself, and yelped in pain several times, attracting the attention of the store owner.
“Damn you, you little shit! I told you to work diligently. You spend all day ogling girls. Haven’t your eyeballs fallen out yet? It’s not easy to earn some money these days, don’t fucking make trouble for me.”
“Yes, yes, Brother!”
After paying for the hot water, Luo Gang told her, “Don’t need anything else? It’s fine, you go pick, I’ll wait for you here.”
Luo Gang’s words were meant for the others around to hear. The yellow-haired kid and the fat owner both heard it, glanced at him, and the fat man snorted before turning back to his game.
Su Shu sensed the atmosphere and shook her head, “No need. I’m not lacking anything.”
“Then let’s go.”
“Okay.”
As they left, swears could still be heard behind them.
On the way back, Su Shu suddenly asked, “Isn’t there anyone in charge?”
Luo Gang kept his eyes forward, alert to the surroundings, and said, “I’ve heard that they’re planning to send some of the military who have been withdrawn from the front-line disaster relief.”
“I see.”
“Don’t go out alone at night,” Luo Gang said, and after walking a few steps as if he remembered something, he added, “It’s best not to go out during the day either.”
“I understand.”
In her past life, she had been transferred from another settlement later on. By the time she got here, there were already some rumors: in the early days of the settlement, due to East City being on high ground near the mountains and the severity of the apocalypse, there were daily deaths. Against such a backdrop, people in the settlement would often disappear or be found dead for no reason.
Everyone was fleeing for their lives; with so many people dead, folks had grown numb to the occasional one or two dying nearby.
There were thefts, rapes, attacks by madmen… you name it.
Luo Gang’s warning meant he probably had heard something too, Su Shu thought.
“I’ll be careful,” she reiterated earnestly.
Luo Gang, hearing this, nodded in satisfaction.
By the time she returned to the shelter, Xiao’ai was already worn out from playing and had fallen asleep in Li Xiaoxia’s arms.
When Luo Gang saw this scene, he went pale. Su Shu, sharp and quick, immediately stepped forward to take Xiao’ai from Li Xiaoxia’s arms.
What do you think?
