Chapter 127 127: Reforms.
The people returned to the palace, and Leo went to look around, suddenly he frowned and said, "Someone!"
A maid came running from the gallery, and she looked at Leo and bowed while asking, "Your Grace, what can I do?"
The young man said, "Miss Smith, can you tell Mister Crawford to fasten up his search for the people I asked him. Tell him that I said, "the gravity of the matter has just increased a lot." will you?"
The lady nodded and ran away. Leo came to sit down in his study and said, 'System, this place doesn't even have sanitation methods, and you wish for me to change it for the better. Do you know how much time it would consume? I know you can just alter the flow of time, but what would happen to Lily's state of mind if she stays exposed here for such a long time?'
The system replied, 'Ping: Host, your concern is valid, but I want to tell you that the system will make sure that your state of mind does not get affected in the least.'
The young man nodded, he was not interested in asking the system how these things would manage this, now his concern has shifted to change the face of this entire territory.
As he was thinking about ways to deal with the situation, the door of the study was knocked. Leo said, "Come in."
The door opened and the old butler walked in as he said, "Sire, the artisans you were asking for have come."
Leo nodded and said, "Have them gather in the backyard, I will come over in a bit."
The old butler nodded and then he left the room. Leo picked up a piece of paper, and then began to draw a blueprint of a plumbing system. Then he made a few more extensive designs that could be adapted on a larger scale and then he picked them up to move out of the study.
Lily didn't have the memory of her real life, she was just following the story line, and when she wakes up she will understand how to be better than she was. He then moved through the palace and came to the backyard, where he found a dozen men standing neatly in rows and columns.
Leo could tell that it must have been Crawford who gave them such instructions. They all saw Leo walking over and were surprised. Crawford looked at him and then said, "Your Grace."
The people bowed and greeted Leo. The young man nodded and said, "Raise your heads."
He then extended the papers to Crawford and said, "Gentlemen, I would like to solve a problem and for that I need your help."
One of the masons replied, "Your Grace, please command us. We will do our best."
Leo smiled and replied, "Thank you, Mister Crawford, please pass the paper to them."
Crawford did as he was told and Leo said, "What you all see is the design that I made. This is a toilet. The lower part can be used to sit down, and then relieve yourselves. The upper part is the tank where the water is stored. Once you press the lever on the corner, the water will clean the toilet and flush the feces outside."
The masons were impressed, in this world the concept of toilets was very novel. Leo said, "I intend to have you all make toilets in the outer town, for the people to use. Cleanliness will reduce the chance of them catching illness."
The masons were surprised and the young man said, "You are masons, I need you to build a structure around the toilet so that the people can protect their privacy."
The mason asked, "Sir, do you think that everyone will follow this?"
Leo nodded and said, "I will ensure that they do. If anyone is caught defecating outside the toilets, they will be fined with one silver coin. If they still don't budge, they will be given ten flogs."
The mason was shocked and Leo said, "Sometimes you have to ensure strong punishments to ensure that the laws are followed. Laws are not made for myself, but for the betterment of the people."
The task was divided and the masons left the place quickly. The young man on the other hand, looked at Crawford and asked, "Did you manage to contact the literate people in the city?"
Crawford nodded and said, "Sir, we have seven people who can read and write properly and two of them even know how to calculate things."
Leo nodded and said, "The number should increase, well, did you call them?"
Crawford replied, "They should have come over by now, Your Grace."
Leo nodded and just then a young guard rushed over, hurriedly saluted Leo and said, "Your Grace, there is a group of people that you summoned."
The young man said, "Thank you, Javi, call them all to the living room."
Javi saluted him before he left quickly and Leo walked toward the living room from the back door. Crawford towed behind him. The latter asked, "Your Grace, what do you intend to do?"
Leo smiled and said, "You will know soon, Sir Crawford."
The young man came to the living room and just in time to see Javi leading the people over. He smiled and the people greeted him with a bow. This was the custom. Leo smiled and said, "Please, everyone, have a seat. Thank you for coming over at such a quick notice."
The people shook their heads and told him it was not a big deal as they didn't have much to do. Leo smiled and said, "I know that you all are people who can read and write. Two of you are capable of doing arithmetic as well. Is that true?"
The people nodded and Leo said, "Well, I would like to open a school for the people of the town. I wonder if you all would like to take up the job of a teacher. You will be compensated as well."
The people were stunned and someone said, "Lord, there are not any nobles here. Who should we teach?"
Leo smiled and said, "I know that other cities and towns restrict that only the nobles shall be literate, I don't want that to be the precedent in Akasia Town. Here people should be literate so that they can follow the instructions and the laws better.
You have all realized that education makes your world better, and you can carry yourself with better dignity and grace, right? Similarly let the children learn and they will feel the same. So, I hope that you all can accept the task."
The people exchanged gazes and one of the young men asked, "Your Grace, it is the fortune of Akasia to have you as a baron, but can you tell me where the classes will be held?"
Leo nodded and said, "Mister Crawford, can you check if there is any free land in the inner town, close to the outer town. The children from both zones should have access to knowledge and they should not be charged for the first year of education."
The young man began to discuss things with the men and women about the school and the policies that would help the people. Just when the discussion was getting long. Snow came in with a couple of maids and had them all serve the guests with tea or juice.
Leo sighed and said, "Pardon my manners, I was so engrossed in the situation at hand that I didn't even host you properly."
The people smiled and one of them commented, "Your Grace, you are by far the most humble noble in the region by far."
Leo chuckled and said, "I would thank you for the compliment."
The people nodded and Snow asked, "Are you discussing the school?"
Leo nodded and Snow said, "The people all work at a young age because they want to earn their meals, and since we intend to ask them for some time, we should procure some food, and give it to them as a relief."
Leo agreed with her method and said, "That is good. In the school, I will ask the older people to come and hold workshops. They will teach the students different skills, and make sure that these children could create their own path in this world."
The young man shook the people as they didn't expect him to be so eloquent. They thanked him and then they all agreed to take up the jobs. Leo said that he would call them again in a week, and till then they can sort out their affairs.
The people left, and Snow smiled at Leo as she sat down beside him and said, "It would be nice to have a school, Lily will have friends from now on."
Lily walked over as she heard this and said, "Why should Lily only have friends? Everyone should be friends. They should meet around the school and have fun."
Leo smiled and chuckled as he pulled her to sit down and said, "Yes. They should have friends too. We will do as my Princess commands."
