Chapter 23 - 23 23 Such Grievance, She Loved
23: Chapter 23 Such Grievance, She Loved 23: Chapter 23 Such Grievance, She Loved At this moment, Mrs.
Carter didn’t at all resemble a female patient.
Her presence was full of the might of a strong businesswoman.
She liked Emily Parker, but that didn’t mean she would allow her to enter the Carter Family’s door with ease.
Just a short while after the two had met for a blind date, Emily Parker was already with child, which could lead people to think that Emily was indecent.
“Mrs.
Carter, the way it happened was like this.”
Emily Parker faced Mrs.
Carter with a look of composure, meeting her eyes.
Lying in front of a strong businesswoman like Mrs.
Carter would only cause her distaste.
Emily Parker simply recounted everything that happened at the movie theater, only concealing the fact of her and Carlos’s secret marriage for a year.
“We were schemed against that night and consummated our marriage.
Later, when we met again for the blind date, it was love at first sight, but I was afraid I wasn’t good enough for Carlos.
It wasn’t until Adeline posted the video online and I discovered I was pregnant that we registered our marriage.”
After Emily Parker finished speaking, Mrs.
Carter still looked at her with a cold gaze.
“Then tell me, what do you like about Carlos?”
Mrs.
Carter, also a woman, was keenly aware of what those vain and materialistic women would say.
Today, if Emily Parker said one wrong thing in front of her, Mrs.
Carter would favor the grandson over the daughter-in-law.
Her grandchildren could lack a mother, but the future mistress of the Carter Family couldn’t be a woman with sinister motives.
“He’s handsome, and he has a great figure.”
Emily Parker thought about it; Carlos’s advantages were quite obvious.
Mrs.
Carter finally let go of Emily Parker’s hand that she had been holding.
*Pfft*
Mrs.
Carter covered her mouth and laughed, her face taking on a girlish shyness.
“You’re really honest, child.
Your taste is quite the same as mine.
The reason I set my sights on Carlos’s father was indeed because he was good-looking and had a great figure.”
“So, auntie, you also have a thing for looks.”
“Still calling me auntie?
You should change that now.”
“Mom.”
Suddenly, the two women had drawn much closer and began chatting warmly.
When Carlos returned, he saw Emily Parker and Mrs.
Carter sitting together, with Mrs.
Carter having servants bring over several photo albums, flipping through them with Emily Parker.
“Is this Carlos as a child?
Why is he wearing a puffy dress, and a little ponytail too?”
“He was so chubby as a child, resembled a little Michelin tire.”
The words Emily Parker said made Mrs.
Carter laugh heartily, as if she had become several years younger all at once.
Carlos had been worried earlier about whether Emily Parker would get along with Mrs.
Carter, as his mother’s personality was quite domineering, and his relationship with her and his sister was quite ordinary.
But unexpectedly, Emily Parker was so well-liked by his mother, who hadn’t laughed so much in many years.
During dinner, only Mrs.
Carter, Carlos, and Emily Parker were present, as Evan Palmer was out on business, and Carlos’s younger sister hadn’t returned from cram school yet.
According to Mrs.
Carter, the girl was a high school student in the eleventh grade, facing college entrance exams next year.
After dinner, Emily Parker stood up to take her leave as she still had to work the next day.
Mrs.
Carter called out to Emily Parker, “Emily, you and Carlos don’t want to have a wedding ceremony, and I respect the wishes of you young people.
However, you must accept the Carter Family’s betrothal gifts.
When my health is better, I shall visit your parents.”
Mrs.
Carter had someone fetch an envelope, and she handed it to Emily Parker.
On the way back, Carlos drove himself, and Emily Parker sat in the passenger seat.
She opened the envelope and saw that it actually contained a stack of property deeds, a total of ten, all located within the inner ring of the Capital’s shopping centers and residential buildings.
Ten property deeds added up to a value of at least a billion.
“This is too valuable; I can’t accept it.”
Although Emily Parker loved money, she was not greedy.
“My mom gave it, just take it.
It’s not all for you anyway; it’s mostly for the child.”
Carlos didn’t even look at those property deeds.
“Actually, your parents are quite easy to get along with.
Why don’t you just bring your loved one home to meet them?”
At the sound of Emily Parker’s voice, Carlos slammed the brakes, even though the traffic light was green, causing the cars behind to honk incessantly.
Carlos turned his head, his dark eyes looking at Emily Parker, his tone filled with a warning,
“Emily, you know best how you got pregnant with my child.”
“Tomorrow, I will have my lawyer draft a marriage agreement for us.
You just need to safely give birth to the child, and after one year, I will give you back your freedom.
Whatever personal things my parents gave you, you can take with you.
But during this year, you need to behave properly, and additionally, you cannot interfere with my private life.”
Having said that, Carlos continued driving, making it clear that he didn’t want to talk about the person in his heart.
Emily Parker glared at Carlos; he still suspected that she drugged him, she must investigate and find out exactly what happened.
When they arrived at the villa, it was already past eight o’clock.
The villa was a standalone structure with a minimalist decor style, dominated by grey tones, starkly different from Cloud Lake Villa.
Yet today, the villa seemed very festive.
From the entrance to the bedroom, double happiness symbols in red had been pasted all over, obviously the work of Mrs.
Carter who had called and instructed the servants to decorate at the last minute.
The master bedroom was on the second floor.
As the door opened, the room revealed a red carpet and red roses everywhere, even the bed was scattered with peanuts and lotus seeds, constantly reminding them that tonight was their wedding night.
“I’ll just sleep in the guest room.”
Emily hesitated at the sight of that two-meter-wide bed.
“The butler of the villa is my mother’s man, and the servants are from Cloud Lake Villa.
I don’t plan to let my mother know we are in a secret marriage.
Don’t worry, I have no interest in pregnant women.”
Carlos handed her a dark gold bank card.
“From now on, you will receive a monthly allowance of two hundred thousand.
If you need anything for the room, just speak to Oliver Ross.
Your daily necessities and clothes will be prepared by Oliver tomorrow, tonight—”
He was cut off before he could finish by the sound of his cellphone ringing.
Carlos’s face, cold as ice, softened slightly when he saw the caller I.D.
He turned and walked out to the balcony outside.
In the night, his voice was magnetic.
After he answered the call, something the other party said caused Carlos’s expression to significantly change.
“Don’t cry, I’ll be right there.”
He hung up, glanced at Emily, “You don’t need to wait up for me tonight, I’ve got something to take care of.”
Saying this, he closed the door with a bang.
He didn’t return the entire night.
Emily, however, slept quite well, dreamlessly through the night.
When she awoke, she remembered that due to yesterday’s rush, she had neglected Grandpa for the whole day.
She thought about preparing lunch for Grandpa and just as she was about to get up, her mobile phone received a bank text message.
“…Your bank account has been credited with 10,000,000.00 dollar…”
Before Emily could react, Mrs.
Carter’s call came in; she had left Emily her number the night before.
“Emily, I only remembered the dowry yesterday and forgot to give you a meeting gift.”
Mrs.
Parker’s laughter could be felt even through the phone.
“Mom, what you’ve given is too much, and I don’t really have any dowry to bring.”
“Our Carter Family’s daughter-in-law doesn’t need a dowry.
This money is for you, don’t give any to Carlos.
Oh yes, I heard that little rascal Carlos went out last night and hasn’t come back yet?”
Mrs.
Parker’s voice contained a few more degrees of anger.
That kid, she thought he’d settle down after the wedding, but he didn’t return the first night.
“Mom, you know how men are, they always have social obligations.
He had something to take care of, asked me to go to sleep early.”
Emily’s phone chimed again.
“…Your bank account has been credited with 10,000,000.00 dollar…”
Mrs.
Carter was touched,
“You’re such a sensible child.
Carlos has made you suffer, here’s another ten million, buy yourself some nice food.”
Emily thought: This mother-in-law who gives money without a second thought, I absolutely adore her.
Such “suffering”, she was willing to endure a few more times.
What do you think?
