CH.595 Moving the Portal

CH.595 Moving the Portal

“So if that is a portal leading to the world where the summoned monsters live while they are … not summoned, can they just return through it instead of being unsummoned?” Einar asked.

“They can. Probably. But I wouldn’t recommend it.” I answered him. “I think, and this is just a guess, that if a monster returns to that world through this portal, they will be where that portal is. But when they are unsummoned, they return to the point from which they were summoned. So I wouldn’t recommend it. But luckily, we have a perfect test subject.” I said as I turned to face Swampert, my just contracted Mud-Water Alligator.

“Swampert. Return to the other side through the portal.” I ordered my alligator.

As ordered, Swampert went through the portal. I then attempted to unsummon the alligator, but that didn’t work. However, I did notice that the mana line connecting us broke, so I was no longer feeding Swampert mana. Also, the portal released quite a bit of mana after Swampert went through it.

A moment later he walked back through to this side, and as he did, a bunch of mana gathered from the air and entered his body. But despite that, the mana line between us didn’t reform. So he is currently just using the mana in the air to fuel himself.

I tried to unsummon Swampert, but without the mana line connecting us, I couldn’t do it.

But by sending just a bit of mana towards Swampert, I was able to re-establish our connection.

I then tried unsummoning Swampert and this time it worked perfectly fine. He disappeared from this side of the portal and reappeared on the other side. He also seemingly realized that if I needed him again, I could call him, so he instead headed for the river and after getting to it, dove into the water.

“So yeah. We probably shouldn’t use this as a gateway for moving around summonable monsters.” I recapped.

“But what do we do with it?” Eline asked. “It technically is dangerous. I ran into three monsters that most likely came through it, and they were aggressive.”

“And what is causing the miasma problems?” Unika asked. “Summoned monsters don’t use miasma, right?”

“Not any more than any other monster.” I answered Unika. “The fluctuation is most likely because of mana.”

“But mana and miasma aren’t the same.” Eline said.

“I’m getting to that. See, standard mana and miasma density is a thing. This is basically how much mana and miasma there is in the air around us. And as I said, that is pretty standard everywhere, except dungeons. Dungeons have a higher density mana.”

“... okay? How does that lead to the differing miasma levels?” Einar asked.

“When a monster comes through that portal, they pull quite a bit of mana to their bodies. This causes a dip in the local mana density, and mana and miasma from the surrounding areas come in to refill that void. But since the monsters just take the mana, this causes a rise in miasma levels. It isn’t a major increase, so nothing that would cause an alarm. But the dosimeters still pick up on it.” I explained. “Then when they return, that mana is returned causing the density of mana to rise. And the higher density mana pushes the surrounding mana and miasma away so it can equalize the levels again. And since this time pure mana pushes away everything, this causes a drop in miasma levels. Again, the dosimeter picks up this change. Thus we get miasma levels that seem to go up and down randomly, despite them not actually changing at all.”

After a while of letting that sink in, Unika asked a question.

“So what do we do about it?”

“... The best idea is honestly just to close it.” I admitted. “It is cool, but not really worth keeping open. … unless…”

“Unless what?” Einar asked.

I turned to the superior spirit of space, since she was still here and asked her a question. “Can we move the portal?”

“Eh?” Iris was a little taken back by my question, but she quickly gathered herself and pondered my question. “... it is possible, I think. I’ve never really dealt with dimensional portals, but it is just coordinate locked. If we can fix it to different coordinates, we should be able to move it.”

“So I can move it to HomeBase?”

“No. Not possible.” Iris denied my suggestion. “As I said, it is coordinate locked. Your HomeBase moves. The portal wouldn’t. I think you can see the problem.”

“... okay. So the problem is how to affix the darn thing. We can’t put it on HomeBase with absolute coordinates, since HomeBase doesn’t have those. We need relative coordinate stabilization. That would work, right?”

“... I think so? Because I will repeat it as many times as I have to. I don’t know dimensional portals.” Iris said. “But I don’t see why relative coordinates couldn't be used. We just need … I’m not sure what we need for that.”

“I do have an idea.” I told her. “I have a card, Different Dimension Gate. We can probably use that as a base for what we need.”

Spoiler

“But that isn’t something that can be done overnight. So we will have to leave the portal open for now.” I told everyone. “Which means that we might want to have someone looking over it until I can figure out the device.”

“Would be a shame if you had a team of adventurers, right?” Unika reminded me.

“Yeah, it would be. I’ll have someone bring them over. Can you watch over that until then?”

“Yes, Master.” Eline was the first to respond. The other two Card Beasts didn’t disagree, so I let them watch over the portal.

I unsummoned the two spirits, and took Unika’s hand.

“We’ll go report to the guild real quick. I’ll bring Unika back after that.” I told Einar and Eline. I then teleported the two of us to the closest adventurers’ guild.

We reported to the guild master that we found a magical anomaly that was causing the altering miasma levels. He asked some questions about it, like if it is dangerous and what he should do. I told him that the Card Summoners would be watching over it until I, a sage recognized by the Sage’s tower, could figure out how we can deal with the anomaly.

I just asked the guild master to keep adventurers from needlessly approaching the anomaly.

I then teleported back to the portal, which I made sure to memorize the location for teleportation, before teleporting back home so I could get to work on a device to stabilize a portal that could move in space. In space? Through space? … a portal that can be on HomeBase without causing problems.

Making the dimensional portal stabilizer, yeah, another dumb name, but it does describe the device, was actually a lot easier than I assumed.

Between being able to us Different Dimension Gate as the base, having over 20 other ‘dimension’ cards to use for reference, and the assistance from Dimensional Alchemist and Different Dimension Master, I got the entire device figured out in a few hours.

Spoiler

Few real life hours. It was more like 12 hours in the Factory, but time dilation is still a thing.

Then I just manufactured the thing using the True Core. It was a bit expensive, but nothing I couldn’t afford.

I then had to move HomeBase to float above the portal location so we could move it. That actually took the longest, as HomeBase has a set speed limit. Okay, technically it doesn’t, but if I move it faster than 150 km/h [95 mph], it causes wind vortexes that are easily noticed by anyone. And if I want to keep HomeBase ‘hidden’, that is a no go. Thus the speed limit.

Then came moving the portal. We started by attaching the portal to the dimensional portal stabilizer. Iris and some of my monsters helped with that part.

I then flew up to HomeBase, which was floating above the area, holding the dimensional portal stabilizer with Telekinesis and Magical Arms.

The dimensional portal stabilizer got installed on the surface of HomeBase, because honestly it looks cool. It was near the place where some summoning circles were set up. I had most of the large summoning circles underground in the dungeon, but three smaller ones had been set up on the surface.

All three of them were improved versions that I made with Pan’s help. They were linked to a dimensional telescope that could see into the summonable monster dimension. And if you had a specific monster targeted with the telescope, you would always summon that monster.

But as I said, the surface ones were smaller in size, so you can only summon up to a C-rank monster with them. It is just insurance. I don’t want someone summoning an S-rank on the surface, despite the fact that it should be completely safe.

Naturally having an open portal that a monster can just walk though wasn’t exactly safe, so some safety mechanisms had to be made. That came in the form of a fence of light around the portal made based on the Wall of Revealing Light.

Spoiler

With it, even if a monster did come through, they would be stopped by the fence. Now the fence didn’t currently differentiate between a person and a monster, so the only way in was to have someone outside the fence deactivate a small portion of it to let you through, but I might make an improved one that will let people pass. Or I’ll make some sort of fence pass that lets you through the fence.

Also, I call it a fence, but it is actually a spherical barrier. It just has a visible fence made of light showing it, while most of it is invisible without a skill like Mana Vision.

And now that we had the portal safe and secure, I needed to make a safety device. A dimensional ‘return home’ teleporter. Luckily I could use Return from the Different Dimension as a base for that. I just needed to mix it with some other stuff and remove the negative side effect.

Spoiler

It was another incisive couple of hours in the Factory while I made it and tested it, but eventually the ‘dimensional returner’ was made.

I ran some tests with it and it worked as intended. At least if you were close to the portal.

After that, came the next set of tests. Like can you use skills on the other side. And as a surprise to no one, you can. Every skill in my arsenal worked, which was great news. Even summoning magic worked.

Then came one last test. I wanted to see if I could make a summoning contract with a monster while I was in the summonable monster dimension.

I didn’t want to spend too long searching for something, so when I found a forest deer, I tried to form a contract with it.

At first, it didn’t work at all. Usually the contract is made by the summoning circle, and I didn’t have that. But then I tried to tame the deer instead, and that seemingly worked. I was able to form a mana line between myself and the deer, similar to that which I’d have with a summoned monster.

I then returned to the other side and attempted to summon my new deer, and I was able to do so.

So taming makes contracts, got it.

That got me thinking, maybe I can make a device that can form a contract when you are on the other side. Because as long as that connection is formed, it turns into a summoning contract when you return to this side.

It is just so we can get around the fact that not everyone can tame monsters. … not everyone can tame monsters. … not everyone can summon monsters…

Einar can tame monsters, but not summon them. So if Einar goes through the portal and tames a monster, what happens? Does he just get Summoning Magic because he should? Or does the contract break? Or does something else happen?

I think that is a question we can answer another day.
