Chapter 124
Lubricating potion...
Ye Bai recalled the snake demon lord's crystal, nearly the size of an egg, and glanced at Lucy beside her, who seemed even more confident in her than she was in herself. For a moment, she didn’t dare to speak.
The system had certified that this crystal could grant the profession panel of a snake demon lord—a mythical-grade item. Surely... there wouldn’t be any problems, right?
Ye Bai turned her head slightly, locking eyes with Lucy.
"Maybe we should go in and check?"
The moment the words left Ye Bai’s mouth, another surge of flames, flickering between reality and illusion, erupted inside the ward, as if setting the entire herbal room ablaze.
Yet, in the next instant, everything returned to calm, as though it had all been a hallucination.
"Boom... boom... boom!"
Three consecutive flashes of light and shadow later, the herbal room remained unharmed, and the ward fell back into silence.
Seeing this, the two hurriedly approached the ward.
"Creak—"
Before Ye Bai and Lucy could reach the door, it swung open from the inside.
"Lucy... cough... Sister Lucy, greetings to the lord!" Felix stood at the doorway, clearing his throat before addressing them.
Ye Bai and Lucy’s eyes lit up simultaneously.
Compared to his condition not long ago, Felix now seemed reborn—full of vitality and vigor befitting his age. His eyes sparkled with life, and even his fiery red hair appeared glossier and brighter.
Ye Bai immediately used [Insight] on Felix.
Character: Felix
Identity: Resident of White Night Village, Favored by the Eighth Layer of the Abyss
Level: 1
Profession: Serpent’s Core
Health: 200/200
Food: 200/200
Water: 200/200
Entertainment: 95/95
Luxury: 100/100
Personal Hobbies: -/-
Loyalty: 80/100
Satisfaction: 100/100
Talents: Chaos Force, Devouring Awakening, Burning Blood, Flame Affinity III
Felix’s level remained unchanged at 1, but his attributes, identity, profession, and talents had undergone a dramatic transformation.
His identity now included "Favored by the Eighth Layer of the Abyss," an inheritance from the snake demon lord. However, due to Felix’s low level and partial Abyssal bloodline, he couldn’t directly become the Abyssal Lord of the eighth layer. Instead, he gained favor, granting him attribute boosts and enhanced growth when venturing into that realm.
Had Ye Bai, as a player and the one who participated in the kill, used the crystal, she could have directly claimed the title of Abyssal Lord of the eighth layer.
His profession had changed to "Serpent’s Core," a unique hidden class derived from the snake demon crystal. Though exclusive, its growth path mirrored the skills of a snake demon lord.
The other talents, Chaos Force and Devouring Awakening, were high-tier Abyssal traits. Chaos Force added extra damage to attacks, while Devouring Awakening resembled Kraken’s Devour ability, accelerating growth—fitting for a lineage akin to the snake demon lord’s.
Lucy stepped forward to examine Felix’s condition, confirming that the effects of Burning Blood had been completely resolved. Nodding in satisfaction, she explained,
"Felix, it was only through the lord’s daring expedition that we found the cure for your condition. You must remember this kindness."
"I understand."
Felix nodded solemnly. Then, mimicking the gestures of warriors pledging allegiance he’d seen before, he knelt on one knee before Ye Bai, fist pressed to his chest.
"Allow me to repay your grace with my life."
Felix had always been a gentle and considerate boy, enduring the agony of Burning Blood without burdening others. But that didn’t mean he enjoyed living in constant pain.
Now, thanks to Ye Bai’s crystal, he was freed from torment and even granted the potential for greatness—effectively receiving a second life.
[You have completed the quest "A Solution for Burning Blood."]
The system prompt chimed as Felix’s loyalty instantly maxed out at 100, permanently locked at that value. Since Lucy had issued the quest on his behalf, her loyalty also increased by 10 points, reaching the full 100.
Ye Bai looked down at the kneeling Felix and tapped her chest lightly. "I accept your oath. From now on, you shall be my eleventh personal guard."
Felix looked up, eyes wide with disbelief. "R-really? Me?"
"Of course." Ye Bai smiled. With his innate boss-tier template, it’d be a waste not to steer him toward combat. "However, monsters will attack the territory tonight. As my guard, you’ll join the battle. Do you have the courage?"
"Absolutely!" Felix answered without hesitation.
Working in the advanced blacksmith’s forge, watching sharp weapons being crafted, he’d often dreamed of wielding them in battle. His body had once held him back, but now, this opportunity felt like a dream come true.
Under the influence of the snake demon lord’s powerful profession template, Felix felt no fear at the prospect of his first real fight—only excitement and fervor coursing through his veins, a hunting instinct awakened by Chaos Force.
Ye Bai nodded in approval. At level 60, she was at the peak of the second tier. Tonight’s boss wouldn’t exceed level 45, and with such a level gap, the experience and loot from killing it herself would be negligible. Better to use it to "raise" Felix instead.
The snake demon lord’s template could elevate him to demigod—or even godhood—without the usual NPC advancement bottlenecks. His potential was limitless, making him a better "experience farm" than even players.
Helping Felix to his feet, Ye Bai asked with concern, "Are there any lingering discomforts?"
"Nothing major," Felix replied, rubbing his throat. "Just a bit of soreness, probably from years near the forge. A little dryness won’t stop me from fighting."
At this, Ye Bai’s expression froze. She exchanged an awkward glance with Lucy, whose face had similarly stiffened.
Earlier, when Ye Bai took out the Serpent Lord's crystal, Felix was drawn by its power and once again fell into a dazed state. Thus, he wasn’t fully aware of the detailed healing process—only vaguely remembering Lucy telling him to drink a potion, which he obediently did.
"Ahem…" Clearing his throat, Ye Bai quickly shifted the topic. "Good, if there’s nothing else, you can report directly to Blaze now."
"Yes!" Felix responded eagerly, practically skipping off to find Blaze, who was patrolling nearby, to explain the situation.
With the matter settled, Ye Bai exchanged a brief farewell with Lucy before leaving the herbal workshop to head to the military district and arrange tonight’s defensive formations.
…
The moment the town’s warning bell rang, all players still active within White Night Town began to be gradually expelled, just like during the previous upgrade.
Unlike the last town upgrade, however, this time players who failed to leave before nightfall wouldn’t escape consequences—they’d face a three-day imprisonment sentence.
Aside from the combat personnel, workers from various trades and ordinary residents hurriedly wrapped up their tasks before dusk and retreated into their homes, locking their doors tight.
Nightfall arrived right on schedule.
Players who learned of White Night Town’s impending upgrade gathered to spectate, as they had before.
Compared to the last upgrade, this event didn’t cause as much of a stir across the star network.
That was because, on this very night, the two cosmic-level faction territories ranked second and third on the leaderboard—Ruilan Village and Lofey Village—were also undergoing upgrades, taking the critical step from village to town status.
In preparation, both territories had mustered large numbers of players, standing ready. Having witnessed White Night Town’s upgrade from afar, other factions now knew that the process would summon level 30+ bosses.
For players whose average level was now around 30, bosses of the same tier weren’t as trivial as they had been during Ye Bai’s first upgrade—this would be a serious challenge.
Truthfully, according to the natural progression of the game, the current pace of player leveling and territory development was the norm. The anomaly had always been Ye Bai and White Night Town, whose progress was unnaturally accelerated.
As time passed, the ground trembled with a familiar rhythm—the first wave of beast attacks had begun.
Thanks to constant player activity, the surrounding wilderness near White Night Town wasn’t densely populated with monsters. Against these level 10 creatures, the veterans took a supporting role while the recruits served as the main damage dealers, gaining combat experience.
Then came the second and third waves, with increasingly stronger beasts.
Level 15, level 20… wild wolves, boars, brown bears, and even creatures from further afield—crocodiles, giant spiders—all surged forward. Energy crossbows whizzed through the air, fired by skilled archers, cutting down wave after wave of monsters.
From a watchtower overlooking most of the territory, Ye Bai observed the unfolding battles.
Everything proceeded smoothly. Even if players tried to join the hunt for experience, they only dared to intercept small groups of monsters. The gains were minimal, so Ye Bai didn’t bother stopping them—after all, to grow a field of "crops," one had to spare a little fertilizer.
…
"Charge!"
Felix, an energy crossbow strapped to his waist and a steel sword in hand, fought with exhilaration, his eyes alight with excitement as he clashed with a wave of wild boars.
Though appointed as Ye Bai’s personal guard, his level was still too low, so he fought alongside the other recruits in the most basic skirmishes.
Had Ye Bai been watching, she would have noticed that after just one wave of wolf attacks, Felix had already surpassed his fellow recruits by a full 4 levels—jumping from level 1 to 9. Now, after slaying a level 16 boar, he reached level 10.
As the boar collapsed, blood spraying, an almost imperceptible crimson glow seeped into Felix’s body, adding to the fiery light in his eyes.
Before the battle, Blaze had received orders from Ye Bai to keep a special eye on the young man.
At first, Blaze hadn’t understood why—until after two waves of combat, when he realized the foresight of his lord. This blacksmith’s apprentice was shockingly talented!
Felix’s growth was visible to the naked eye, astonishing even Blaze, who had seen many players. His progress outpaced even the most naturally gifted "Divine-Blooded."
Just then, after dispatching another boar, Felix stowed away his crossbow, opting instead for close-quarters combat with his sword.
Compared to ranged attacks, he found that the visceral thrill of melee combat suited him far better. The chaotic, bloodthirsty hunger of his Infernal Power flared brighter with each level gained, igniting a fire within him.
"Roar—!"
Unconsciously, Felix had pushed deep into the frontlines, where a larger, stronger elite boar took notice of him, charging with tusks bared.
Blaze and six veterans stood watch, ready to intervene if any recruit faced mortal danger.
Seeing this, one of the veterans immediately raised his crossbow, energy charging in the bolt’s slot as he aimed at the oversized boar.
"Wait." Blaze stopped him.
The others were puzzled—was the captain secretly displeased with this newly promoted junior?
"Ha!"
A triumphant shout rang out from the fray.
Instead of retreating, the red-haired youth leapt forward, gripping his sword with both hands and delivering a powerful overhead slash straight at the charging boar.
"Thud!"
Though his form was unrefined by veteran standards, the strike landed with devastating force, cleaving into the boar’s skull and halting its charge mid-motion.
"Screeee—!"
The beast howled in agony, blood gushing. Its eyes, already frenzied red from the influence of the World Tree, now flickered with fear despite Felix’s lower level. Twisting its body, it tried to retreat.
But Felix wasn’t about to let it escape. He pressed forward, hacking relentlessly. An unseen force amplified his wild swings, each blow tearing effortlessly through the boar’s tough hide.
Before long, the second wave of boars was vanquished.
Blaze looked at Felix with satisfaction as the young man returned. Having just experienced two battles, the boy already exuded the sharp, battle-hardened aura he was so familiar with—the kind forged through countless trials of blood and fire.
A born warrior indeed!
"Good lad!" Blaze patted Felix's shoulder approvingly. "Still got energy left? If so, I’ll take you to a real battlefield next."
A real battlefield?
"No problem!" Felix, his eyes still gleaming with excitement, felt his blood surge at the words. Despite having just gone through an intense fight, he felt no exhaustion—only an unprecedented sense of release.
The third and fourth waves of beasts were methodically dealt with, and the night deepened into its latter hours.
"Boom… Boom…"
The ground trembled as a colossal presence approached.
Players in the distance, the guards of White Night Town, and Ye Bai atop the watchtower all turned their gazes toward the source of the sound.
The figure moved swiftly, soon revealing itself to everyone.
It was a massive, bluish-black serpent, easily over thirty meters long, with a head wider than a meter. Every ripple of its scales revealed the powerful muscles beneath.
[King Serpent]
Level: 39
HP: 600,000/600,000
Skills: Frost Mist, Suffocating Coil, Tail Whip, Devouring Bite
Weaknesses: Seven-inch spot, Mouth
This time, the boss was a serpent—what a coincidence.
From the watchtower, Ye Bai scanned it with [Insight] and immediately dismissed the idea of intervening. The energy crossbows were perfect for dealing with such a massive boss. Compared to the previous Twin-Headed Vulture, this King Serpent was much easier to handle.
Moreover, Felix’s class panel was derived from the higher-tier Serpent Demon Lord. Compared to the Kraken, this terrifying serpent might as well be called a mere snake.
On the frontlines, Blaze and the others stood ready. Their long-trained coordination and superior equipment gave them confidence.
Besides, if the lord had to step in every time the territory faced a beast tide, what was the point of having a barracks?
"Fire!"
At the command, the first volley of energy bolts shot toward the King Serpent’s massive body.
The highest-leveled guards, also the barracks’ instructors, moved in unison, using their class skills to restrain the serpent and create openings for damage.
The observing players in the distance roughly gauged the monster level required for upgrading a territory to Tier 5.
By now, none of them harbored thoughts of stealing the kill. Everyone knew how deadly White Night Town’s energy weapons were. Plus, after a month, the player base around the town had shifted—none of the current players were confident enough to try snatching the boss.
The monster density near the town was lower than in NPC cities. Due to player activity, the leveling resources around White Night Town had grown scarce, unable to sustain players above Level 30. Higher-level players had already moved on to NPC cities.
So, no matter how tempting the boss was, from any angle, no player was foolish enough to try their luck—after all, "trying" often meant "dying."
The guards had reached Levels 26-27 when the town upgraded to Tier 5. Over the in-game month Ye Bai was away, training and routine battles had pushed them to Levels 33-34, slightly ahead of the player base.
Over sixty warriors above Level 20 joined the fight against the King Serpent.
With traps and well-coordinated tactics, the serpent’s health steadily dropped.
Amid the fierce battle, Felix, on his first real battlefield, stood out. Having leveled up to 22 during the earlier waves, he fought alongside the other guards against the King Serpent, growing fiercer with each strike.
By the midway point, Felix had unknowingly become the frontline’s main force.
His movements were agile, his strength immense—every attack made the King Serpent writhe in pain, solidly holding the boss’s aggro while the ranged crossbow users dealt continuous damage.
Blaze and the others gradually freed themselves from the fight, stunned to see Felix taking the lead.
Especially Blaze. His perception of the boy was once again overturned. In his daze, he thought he saw an illusion—Felix’s body wreathed in a flickering, fiery silhouette.
The phantom flames burned brighter as Felix’s battle with the King Serpent intensified. The serpent’s freezing breath had no effect on him, and soon, the King Serpent was the one at a disadvantage.
"Whoosh! Whoosh!"
Wave after wave of energy arrows scorched the serpent’s body, chipping away at its health.
Finally, Felix leaped forward, driving his steel sword into a pale scale beneath the serpent’s neck.
"Hiss—!"
The King Serpent let out a shrill cry before collapsing, lifeless, to the ground.
Felix, still gripping his sword, landed with the falling corpse, his chest heaving.
After a brief silence, cheers erupted as dawn’s light broke in the distance.
But Blaze’s eyes remained fixed on Felix. The red-haired boy, his face obscured by his hair, panted excitedly, not joining the celebration. Instead, he yanked his sword free from the serpent’s body.
"Schlick!"
Blood splattered over Felix. For a fleeting moment, Blaze thought he saw the phantom flames morph into an indescribable, multi-headed serpentine shadow—each head more terrifying than the King Serpent by a thousandfold.
Then, as if sensing his gaze, Felix’s eyes flicked toward Blaze.
The madness, cruelty, and icy detachment in that single glance rooted Blaze to the spot, cold sweat drenching his back as primal fear gripped him.
"Not bad!"
A familiar voice broke the tension. Blaze watched as Lord Ye Bai, completely unaware, walked toward the now-dangerous Felix.
His pupils constricted, and he rasped out a warning—
"My Lord—!"
Before the word "careful" could even form in his mind, Blaze saw the indistinct, writhing shadow of the hydra-like apparition in his vision tremble violently as Ye Bai approached. In the next instant, it melted away like snow meeting fire.
Then Felix, who had seemed to be caught in some unknown peril, shuddered violently and reverted to his initial timid and awkward demeanor—no, not just awkward, but outright fearful as he stood rigidly before Ye Bai. "G-Greetings, my lord!"
Blaze's eyes widened in disbelief, as if everything that had just happened had been nothing but an illusion dispelled by the lord's arrival.
Ye Bai patted Felix on the shoulder. "I saw your performance. Well done. There’s no need… to be so nervous."
Encouraged, Felix nodded, struggling to suppress the overwhelming terror rising from the depths of his being.
He couldn’t understand it himself. Before, he hadn’t felt this way, but after growing stronger in battle, he now found himself uncontrollably afraid in the presence of his lord. This fear wasn’t born of his own will—it felt as though it stemmed from something deeper, something ingrained in his very blood.
Seeing Felix so frightened, Ye Bai dismissed him and turned to Blaze, who had called out to her earlier. "What happened?"
Blaze shook his head briskly, his gaze toward Ye Bai brimming with even greater reverence. "Nothing. I must have been momentarily dazed."
"Rest well after the battle," Ye Bai encouraged her ever-diligent captain of the guard before turning toward the rising sun to oversee the aftermath.
Noting that Felix had reached level 37 after this battle, Ye Bai was pleased with his rapid growth. Soon, he’d be capable of standing on his own.
But… why did the boy seem so terrified of her?
Suddenly, a thought struck her. She opened her personal panel, her eyes settling on the entries for [Godslayer] and [Dread of the Serpent].
Mystery solved.
What do you think?
