Chapter 79 - 79 77 Capture Them All
Chapter 79: Chapter 77: Capture Them All Chapter 79: Chapter 77: Capture Them All Shen Yunfang lay on the grass, internally chastising herself when suddenly she heard a pig-squealing noise behind her.
She abruptly sat up from the grass, craned her neck to look behind, and thought happily, could it be that it worked?
And indeed, just as she had frantically run backward, the sow had charged in this direction. In the process, it had carelessly fallen victim to the “deadly pitfall series” Yunfang dug, with another one of its front legs getting trapped this time.
When Yunfang looked over, the sow was sticking its rump in the air and squealing miserably.
The other two piglets were following in their mother’s footsteps, all with their rumps in the air.
Yunfang laughed but didn’t dare approach immediately, choosing instead to circle around the outside.
Only after confirming it was safe, she ignored those stuck in the ground and went to check on the boar that had been lying down for several days.
The wild boar might have resigned itself to its fate, or maybe it had lost the strength to squeal, for as she approached, it didn’t move its head, just grunted softly twice.
Yunfang took a look, thought for a bit, then took out a large basin she had prepared beforehand, along with a pre-sharpened kitchen knife, believing she would be successful this time.
She placed the basin under the wild boar’s neck, then took out a towel and draped it over the boar’s head, thinking it better to cover the scene as it was too bloody.
There’s no need to go into what happened next. Although the kitchen knife was a bit blunt, by sawing back and forth, she eventually managed to cut through the wild boar’s thick skin.
Luckily she was well-prepared so there wasn’t blood splattered everywhere. After waiting a while to make sure the boar was completely dead and its blood had drained, she then collected the basin and stored the dead boar in her space.
Several days later, she dispatched the remaining wild pigs in the same manner, and with that, the family of seven wild pigs was completely taken care of by her.
“Sister-in-law, you’re finally here. I’ve been waiting for you for a while,” Yunfang mused about pork and couldn’t do anything else, getting up early, having a quick bite and waiting at the door. She had never looked forward to Brother Dashuan’s wife’s arrival as much as she did today.
“What’s the rush today, waiting especially for me at the door?” Brother Dashuan’s wife noticed at a glance that Yunfang had something up her sleeve.
“Sister-in-law, I’ve been longing for you to come. Hurry up, I have something to show you.” Yunfang closed the door and pulled Brother Dashuan’s wife towards the backyard.
“Oh, slow down a bit.” Dashuan’s wife stumbled as she was pulled, instinctively protecting her belly with her hands.
Yunfang’s mind was so preoccupied with the pork in the backyard that she failed to notice the small gesture of Brother Dashuan’s wife.
“Sister-in-law, please give me some advice. What should I do about this?” Yunfang pointed at the dead wild boar lying by the well in the backyard and asked.
Brother Dashuan’s wife jumped in fright, exclaiming, “Oh, my goodness, why is there a wild pig here?” If not for Yunfang gripping her tightly, she would have turned and run.
“Alive or dead?” Dashuan’s wife asked with a trembling voice.
“Of course, it’s dead.” Yunfang gave her a puzzled look. There was no need to ask—if it were alive, would she dare to stand there pointing at it? “Sister-in-law, you must have gotten scared,” she observed, noticing her face had gone a bit pale.
“Oh, dear me, indeed. You scared me to death.” Brother Dashuan’s wife, upon hearing that the wild boar was dead, let out a sigh of relief. She was so scared her heart nearly leapt out of her throat.
“Hehe, it’s all my fault for not giving you a heads up.” Shen Yunfang chuckled sheepishly.
“Enough with the chuckles, come on, spill it, where’d this come from?” Dashuan’s wife pointed at the boar on the ground and asked.
“Sister-in-law, can we talk about this later, please? This boar was brought here in the middle of last night. Look at the weather; if the sun comes up later, won’t it start to stink?” Now it was the dog days of July, the hottest time of the year. Any further delay and the meat might spoil, which would be a real pity.
Of course, she had chosen the coolest spot in the house to place it, and there was a well nearby, which emitted a cool breeze every now and then, so it should be fine for a while.
“My oh my, definitely not, you just wait, I’ll go fetch Brother Dashuan.” Dashuan’s wife slapped her thigh and turned to look for her man. But before she even made it, she suddenly remembered she had something else to ask, “By the way, what are you planning to do with it? Are you going to turn it in, or…”
Shen Yunfang blinked her eyes. She was quite selfish. If it weren’t for the lack of tools and not knowing how to butcher a pig, she would never have let anyone else lay eyes on the pork. So how could she possibly be so selfless as to turn in such a big, fat boar, right?
If it were indeed turned in, she’d at most get ten or eight pounds out of it, and that’s considering if they were generous due to her contribution. But if she didn’t turn it in, the whole boar would be hers. Was there even a choice between more and less?
“Sister-in-law, this is mine alone, do I still need to turn it in?” Shen Yunfang asked pitifully.
“This… Normally, the game caught in the mountains doesn’t need to be turned in…” Normally, it would be wild chickens and rabbits.
“Then that’s great. I won’t turn it in, we’ll just keep it between our two families.” Shen Yunfang said happily.
Dashuan’s wife looked at Shen Yunfang, probably pondering whether this was okay, and then nodded firmly, “Alright, then we won’t turn it in. But we can’t tell anyone about this, otherwise if word gets out, who knows what stories they’ll cook up about us.”
Hunting wild boars was always a communal activity in the village, so it was naturally assumed that everyone would share in the spoils. That had become the custom; even having meat meant sharing it around. So, for Shen Yunfang to keep the boar to herself, she would have to be good at keeping secrets, or else she might end up covered in the mess herself.
“I know, I know, to enjoy a few more bites of meat, we need to keep our mouths shut tight,” Shen Yunfang was more than eager to have as few people know as possible since the details wouldn’t stand up to scrutiny.
“You glutton!” Dashuan’s wife tapped Shen Yunfang’s forehead with her finger, “Right then, I’ll be off soon. You make sure to lock the door, and don’t let anyone in, alright?” Dashuan’s wife instructed anxiously.
She still felt a bit guilty about it all, even if the boar was Yunfang’s catch, she couldn’t help feeling like she’d done something wrong.
Shen Yunfang nodded. Her home was so secluded, and she had lived there for nearly a year since her transmigration. The number of visitors could be counted on two hands, and ever since she had a falling out with Shen Ergu about the money Li Hongjun sent, only Shen Dama had visited twice — and she never returned because the earthworms in the house disgusted her.
Dashuan’s wife returned rather quickly. Shen Yunfang had just gone over her made-up story about the boar again in her mind when Dashuan and his wife knocked on the front door.
Like underground operatives signaling to each other, Dashuan’s wife peeked outside to check for any followers while locking the gate, leaving Shen Yunfang speechless with her paranoia. Doing this would be as good as saying ‘Three Hundred Silver Taels Are Not Here’ if someone was really there.
Seeing the wild boar in the backyard, Dashuan was just as stunned as his wife had been. Although his wife had told him Yunfang had caught a boar, seeing such a massive one still seemed unbelievable. The boar’s weight was probably three or four times that of Yunfang. Even if she was somehow capable of killing it, how had she managed to bring it home?
“How on earth did you kill such a big boar, and how did you bring it back here?”
“Oh, spare me the small talk. We’ve gotta get to work before it’s too late. If the meat stinks after being left out in the sun all day, that won’t do. Hurry up!” Before Shen Yunfang could answer, Dashuan’s wife was already getting impatient.
Can’t the chat wait? Don’t they know what’s most important right now?
What do you think?
