Chapter 45
Zhou Qingyu was someone who fiercely protected those close to her.
The idea of sending Yan Xi to be Su Lingling's assistant was something she couldn't accept. It wasn't just a slap in Yan Xi's face—it was a slap in hers too. How dare they bully her best friend!
Yan Xi nodded vigorously, like pounding garlic. "Exactly! Qingyu, you have to help me get justice! I need to secure this role!"
Zhou Qingyu hesitated, her expression showing a hint of conflict.
That evening, Pei Yubai had invited her to a candlelit dinner. She had already promised him the role, and going back on her word now felt... wrong.
Yan Xi noticed Zhou Qingyu's dilemma. "Qingyu, are you worried about how to explain this to Pei Yubai?"
Zhou Qingyu sighed. "I'm afraid Yubai-gege will be upset."
Yan Xi tilted her head. "But doesn't he like you? Would he really hold it against you? If he stops loving you just because you don't give him resources, what kind of man is he?"
Zhou Qingyu paused. Yan Xi's words made sense, but a small voice in her head insisted that Pei Yubai should always come first—he was the most important. Yan Xi continued to press, "Qingyu, you have to believe that if Pei Yubai truly likes you, he'll understand your situation! If he can't empathize, then he's not worth it." Her words struck Zhou Qingyu like a bolt of clarity.
Yes, Yubai-gege adored her, so of course he would understand! Zhou Qingyu's gaze hardened with resolve. "You're right! Tomorrow, I'll go see Producer Xu!"
The night was dark, enveloping the Zhou family estate.
Outside, a cold moon hung high in the sky, casting a silvery glow. The distant mountains loomed faintly in the night.
A black Rolls-Royce slowly approached, its headlights cutting through the thick darkness like two sharp beams.
Zhou Yanci sat in the back seat, his silver-gray suit impeccably tailored. A file lay open in front of him, and his fountain pen moved across the pages with a soft scratching sound.
Work at Zhou Corporation wasn't overwhelming, and Zhou Yanci was efficient. He rarely needed to work overtime.
But outside of Zhou Corporation, Meng Yingrong often sought him out.
Assistant Sun had once advised Zhou Yanci against overworking himself. But Zhou Yanci didn't mind. His life revolved around work—there wasn't much else. Compared to attending social events or cultivating hobbies, Zhou Yanci preferred the grind.
When Zhou Yanci was four, Meng Yingrong and Zhou Hongsheng divorced. After that, she never visited him. It wasn't until Zhou Qingyu's mother passed away that Meng Yingrong reentered his life. But her gaze was always cold and demanding. Only when Zhou Yanci excelled did she spare him a glance.
As a child, he didn't understand favoritism. He just wanted his mother to notice him. That longing stayed with him, becoming a reflex. Now, as an adult, Zhou Yanci no longer yearned for such fleeting affection, but the habit of working hard was etched into his DNA.
"Mr. Zhou, we're home."
The Rolls-Royce stopped at the estate's gate, and the driver's voice pulled Zhou Yanci from his thoughts. He looked at the old gate, its weathered surface bearing the marks of time and memories. He frowned. "Why are we at the estate?"
The driver quickly apologized. "You've been staying here the past few days. I thought you'd return tonight."
Zhou Yanci remembered then—he hadn't informed the driver. Early that morning, he had told Yan Xi that after the Zijing Garden project wrapped up, he wouldn't be staying at the estate anymore. But he'd forgotten to tell the driver.
Zhou Yanci shook his head. "It's not your fault. I didn't say anything."
"Shall we head to the apartment now?" the driver asked.
"No, it's fine."
Back inside the estate, the lights were dim.
Zhou Yanci returned late, and most of the staff had already retired for the night. He walked through the lush courtyard and entered the main hall. Only one room was still brightly lit, and the courtyard was silent except for the faint rustle of papers.
On the grand armchair sat a young woman, her legs folded beneath her, engrossed in a document.
She wore an oversized nightgown, the collar loose, revealing her delicate, rosy shoulders.
Hearing footsteps, she looked up, her eyes lighting up as she saw Zhou Yanci approaching. Yan Xi practically bounced over to him. "Mr. Zhou? I thought you weren't staying here tonight?" Her voice was tinged with delight, her eyes sparkling like stars in the night sky.
Zhou Yanci glanced at the document she'd left on the armchair. Without his glasses, the dense text was blurry, but he could make out the title: *Crazy Summer and Winter*.
"The driver took the wrong route," Zhou Yanci explained.
"Oh, I see!"
Yan Xi's tone was regretful, but her expression betrayed no such sentiment. "I went to Zhou Corporation today but didn't see you. I forgot to say—thank you for investing in *Crazy*. It's going to be a hit! You have great taste!"
"Mm," Zhou Yanci replied indifferently.
Her recent attentiveness was clearly about the investment.
Zhou Yanci responded in a businesslike manner. "I only gave an objective evaluation. *Crazy* has investment potential."
Yan Xi snapped her fingers. "Great minds think alike!"
"Wait," she said, suddenly remembering something. She darted back to the armchair and rummaged through her bag, pulling out a small box. She handed it to Zhou Yanci. "I thought you weren't coming back! Since you're here, this is for you."
"What is it?"
"Earplugs!" Yan Xi opened the package and pulled out two small black earplugs. "You haven't been sleeping well, right? These can block out the cicadas and help you sleep better!"
Zhou Yanci held the earplugs, his fingers tightening around them.
He said, "I've already approved the investment for *Crazy*. You don't need to do this."
Yan Xi looked genuinely confused. "Helping you sleep better... what does that have to do with the investment?" Zhou Yanci's gaze fixed on her, his breathing growing heavier.
Something felt off.
He wanted to ask Yan Xi, but the questions felt too awkward to voice. Yan Xi's eyes darted around.
Why did the big boss look so strange? Did he figure out her intentions? Sure, her main goal was to help Zhou Qingyu accumulate luck points... but she also genuinely wanted Zhou Yanci to stay healthy and not overwork himself to death!
No, no, Zhou Yanci couldn't have awakened. He definitely didn't know about the luck points. He was probably just thinking about how to work overtime tonight!
Remembering that Zhou Qingyu was still 0.5 points short, Yan Xi pressed on. "Mr. Zhou, I just want you to sleep well for your health! Really, there's nothing else! You looked so tired when you came back—are you overworking yourself?"
"I'm fine," Zhou Yanci replied, though his voice betrayed his exhaustion.
"Here, sit down. I have a solution!"
Before Zhou Yanci could react, Yan Xi had pulled him onto the armchair.
The table was adorned with a fragrant incense burner. Yan Xi extended her slender, delicate fingers and began massaging Zhou Yanci's temples.
Her touch was warm and soothing, her fingers as soft as fine silk or the lightest of feathers.
Her technique was skilled, and the sensation was deeply comforting.
Zhou Yanci's throat felt dry, and his breathing grew heavier.
"Did you learn this?" he asked Yan Xi.
"I used to do it for my mother!"
Zhou Yanci knew Yan Xi was referring to Madam Lin. "Your technique is so skilled, I thought you had formal training."
"Well, I had no choice!" Yan Xi laughed. "Madam Lin wouldn’t let me join the competition classes back then, saying it wasn’t worth the extra money. I was young, so I had to find ways to please her!"
Back then, Yan Xi was still the young lady of the Lin family, but Madam Lin, being a stepmother, treated her poorly. Life under a wealthy stepmother was tough, and Yan Xi had learned many skills from a young age.
Suddenly, Zhou Yanci felt as if countless needles were pricking his heart, a pang of shared pain.
He abruptly reached out and grabbed Yan Xi’s wrist.
His grip tightened, turning her fair skin red.
"Mr. Zhou! That hurts!"
Zhou Yanci’s gaze was intense. "Yan Xi, this isn’t the Lin family. You don’t need to please me."
Yan Xi blinked. "Do you think I’m doing this to win your favor, to secure investment for a project?"
Zhou Yanci stared at her intently.
Beneath his calm exterior, decades of suppressed emotions churned like a storm beneath still waters.
He looked at Yan Xi with such focus, as if seeing his younger self in her. But Yan Xi laughed, her voice clear as a mountain stream. "Mr. Zhou, I’m doing this because I want you to sleep well tonight."
"I genuinely wish for your health and a long life." Zhou Yanci’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he gazed into Yan Xi’s clear eyes, an indescribable emotion spreading through him.
Suddenly, he became acutely aware of the delicate texture of her wrist, like flawless white jade. A shadow flickered in his eyes, as if a beast within him roared. Zhou Yanci released her hand and turned to leave the hall.
Even after returning to his room, Zhou Yanci could still hear his own heartbeat. The documents were left on the armchair in the hall; he had no intention of working overtime. He lay on the bed, his arm covering his forehead, his vision dark. Suddenly, he noticed the bed felt softer.
The mattress had been changed.
The next morning, Yan Xi woke up refreshed.
A great day begins with earning some luck points!
Zhou Yanci had obediently gone to bed early last night, and Yan Xi was quite pleased. Although it was only 0.1 luck points, every little bit counts! After breakfast, Yan Xi and Zhou Qingyu went to Interconnect Entertainment to meet Producer Xu. Interconnect Entertainment was the production company behind *Crazy Summer and Winter*, and the casting for the film was currently underway in their office building.
When they arrived, the audition floor was already packed with actors. As one of the co-investors, Star Glory didn’t need to wait like the other actors. Instead, they went straight to Producer Xu’s office.
Upon hearing their request, Producer Xu looked troubled. "Miss Zhou, this is a bit awkward. Yesterday, you contacted me and said you wanted to give the role of the third female lead to Tianhui. Ten minutes ago, Ye Luoyi auditioned, and both Director Wei and I were very satisfied with her performance."
Zhou Qingyu was stunned, but Yan Xi quickly asked, "Has the contract been signed?" "Not yet," Producer Xu admitted.
It had been a busy day, and they hadn’t finalized the salary or gone through the legal process.
Yan Xi breathed a sigh of relief. If the contract wasn’t signed, there was still room to negotiate. Producer Xu, sensing her thoughts, said, "Miss Yan, the role has already been decided, and the audition is over. It wouldn’t be appropriate to go back on it now…"
Yan Xi’s gaze was sharp, her eyes cold. "Producer Xu, as far as I recall, during the contract signing at Zhou Corporation yesterday, I was the one designated to handle negotiations with the crew. If I didn’t agree, how could you just give the role to Tianhui?" Producer Xu’s eyes darted around. "Wasn’t it Miss Zhou who agreed to it?" Yan Xi quickly pressed Zhou Qingyu’s hand and continued, "Let me be clear. If you insist on choosing Ye Luoyi, we’ll withdraw our investment." Producer Xu’s eyes widened.
This was unheard of—Zhou Qingyu had agreed, but her subordinate was objecting? But when Producer Xu looked at Zhou Qingyu, she didn’t refute Yan Xi’s words. Instead, she nodded in agreement.
Producer Xu stammered, "Miss Yan, this isn’t fair…" Yan Xi smirked. "Producer Xu, this is the proper procedure. In business, we speak plainly. Two hundred million isn’t a small amount. During the profit-sharing discussion yesterday, we didn’t make excessive demands. All we asked for was the role of the third female lead."
"If you think Ye Luoyi is the perfect fit for the role and insist on giving it to her, that’s your choice. We respect that, but if we can’t get what we want, we’ll withdraw our investment."
Producer Xu was horrified. "The first installment of the investment has already been transferred! If you withdraw now, the money won’t be refunded! Miss Yan, that’s fifty million! Can you really make that decision?"
Yan Xi raised an eyebrow. "Yes, I can. If you don’t believe me, call Zhou Corporation and ask."
Producer Xu thought Yan Xi was bluffing. While the investment in *Crazy Summer and Winter* was made under Star Glory’s name, the funds actually came from Zhou Corporation. Clearly, the final say belonged to Zhou Corporation.
Yan Xi, after all, was just Zhou Qingyu’s best friend and had no ties to the corporation. And Zhou Qingyu, despite being the eldest daughter of the Zhou family, wasn’t the one who had approved the investment—that decision had been made by Zhou Yanci. Producer Xu had heard plenty of gossip about wealthy families and knew that Zhou Qingyu and Zhou Yanci didn’t get along. Zhou Yanci was a businessman; he would never side with Zhou Qingyu. *Crazy Summer and Winter* was a profitable project. Why would Zhou Corporation agree to withdraw the investment and lose fifty million?
Producer Xu quickly contacted Zhou Corporation.
Zhou Qingyu tugged at Yan Xi’s sleeve, worried. She hadn’t spoken up earlier because she was the one who had agreed to give the role to Tianhui yesterday, and she felt guilty.
"The investment has already been transferred. How can we withdraw it? Zhou Yanci wouldn’t agree, right?" Yan Xi patted Zhou Qingyu’s hand. "Don’t worry! Zhou Yanci isn’t stupid. He’ll know we’re just putting pressure on Producer Xu to get the role back!" Despite her confident words, Yan Xi was still anxious. She quickly sent Zhou Yanci a WeChat message: *Mr. Zhou, I won’t let your investment go to waste. Just play along with this act, please!*
Just as her phone buzzed, Assistant Sun walked into the office. "Mr. Zhou, Interconnect Entertainment contacted us. They want to know… if Yan Xi has full authority to represent Zhou Corporation and make decisions about our investment."
Zhou Yanci glanced at his phone and saw Yan Xi’s message. Along with the text, she had sent a cat sticker, its big, pleading eyes staring at him.
"Yan Xi wants to withdraw the investment?" Zhou Yanci asked Assistant Sun.
Assistant Sun: "It seems so, Mr. Zhou. Honestly, Yan Xi is being unreasonable. The first installment has already been paid. You can’t just withdraw an investment like it’s a game—"
"Tell Interconnect Entertainment that Yan Xi can represent Zhou Corporation."
"Huh?!"
Assistant Sun thought he had misheard.
Zhou Yanci shot him a look. "Was I unclear?" Assistant Sun opened his mouth but couldn’t find the words to respond.
That’s 50 million! And just like that, Yan Xi had squandered it away??? Producer Xu was completely stunned when he heard Assistant Sun’s response.
He had thought Yan Xi was just bluffing, but who would have expected the Zhou Corporation to support her! He had no idea who Yan Xi really was, but if she could represent the Zhou Corporation… she was definitely not someone to underestimate!
“Miss Yan, you’re absolutely right. It’s our people who didn’t handle things properly. But…” Producer Xu was still in a tough spot.
When the Zhou Corporation had decided to invest in *Crazy*, Producer Xu had prepared himself for the possibility of having someone forced into the cast. He had assumed it would be Zhou Qingyu. And Zhou Qingyu’s acting skills… well, they were downright painful to watch.
But the Zhou Corporation was the investor, so what could he do?
Although the industry had high hopes for *Crazy*, until it was released, no one could be sure how it would perform, and finding investors wasn’t easy.
So, when he found out that Ye Luoyi was coming for an audition, Producer Xu was over the moon. Even though Ye Luoyi had a delicate, innocent look that didn’t match the glamorous and striking female lead, Producer Xu still approved her audition.
Now, Zhou Qingyu wanted to take back the role, and it seemed like she even wanted to step into it herself…
Producer Xu let out a long sigh.
“We can hold an audition,” Yan Xi suddenly said.
“An audition?” Producer Xu’s expression turned awkward.
An audition for the investor? Was this just for show?
Yan Xi could see Producer Xu’s hesitation. “I’ve read the character description for the female lead. She’s supposed to have a striking, glamorous beauty, almost intimidatingly so… Does Ye Luoyi fit that description at all? She doesn’t even look the part, and besides, she doesn’t play the cello, does she? You’ll definitely need to find someone else.”
“Qingyu can audition. If she’s suitable, let her take the role. If not, you can find someone else.”
Although luck points were important, if Zhou Qingyu performed poorly, the backlash after the release would be overwhelming, and *Crazy*’s box office would suffer. Instead of gaining luck points, they’d end up losing them.
So, Yan Xi didn’t want to force Zhou Qingyu into the role. She wanted her to go through the proper channels and audition.
Zhou Qingyu was nervous. She knew her acting skills weren’t great. “Xi Xi, what if I can’t do it…”
“It’s fine!” Yan Xi reassured her. “Just follow the script and do your best!”
Since the investor wanted to put on this show, Producer Xu had no choice but to agree. Honestly, how clueless was Yan Xi? Hadn’t she seen Zhou Qingyu’s previous work?
Despite his internal complaints, Producer Xu brought out the script and a cello for Zhou Qingyu’s audition.
Maybe they could reduce the female lead’s screen time… If the acting was too bad, it would drive the audience away!
With that thought, the audition began.
Zhou Qingyu followed the script, performing as instructed.
One thing was certain: Zhou Qingyu’s face was stunning. Even if her acting was mediocre, just looking at her was a pleasure.
Her acting was indeed rough, likely because she wasn’t professionally trained and had little experience. She clearly looked like a beginner.
But when she walked onto the stage and started playing the cello, Producer Xu felt as though he was watching a real cellist, completely immersed in her music. In the end, acting was all about authenticity.
It was about making the audience believe, making them feel that the character truly existed. Producer Xu could see the rawness in other parts of her performance, but when it came to the cello scene… he was captivated.
When the audition ended, Producer Xu didn’t give a definitive answer. “Miss Yan, as you said, we can still audition other actors and see who’s the best fit.” Producer Xu thought Zhou Qingyu was suitable—her cello performance was flawless, but the rest of her acting was only at a 70% level. Maybe there was someone even better out there?
If Zhou Qingyu wasn’t the perfect actress for the role, then there must be someone who was.
Producer Xu: “I’ll need to discuss this with the director.”
Yan Xi and Zhou Qingyu were both nervous but agreed.
These things couldn’t be forced. If the role didn’t fit, forcing it would only make things worse. Yan Xi and Zhou Qingyu returned to the old mansion, feeling uneasy. Zhou Qingyu wasn’t too concerned about the *Crazy* role; she was more worried about whether Yan Xi would end up becoming Su Lingling’s lackey.
Meanwhile, Yan Xi was preoccupied with Zhou Qingyu’s luck points. Tomorrow was Old Master Pei’s birthday banquet, and Zhou Qingyu’s current luck points were at 29.6. She might gain 0.1 luck points from Zhou Yanci tomorrow, but she was still 0.3 points short. They were so close!
As the sky darkened, it was 6 PM, and Zhou Yanci had just finished his work for the day.
As long as he didn’t have to clean up Meng Xuanyu’s messes, Zhou Yanci usually had plenty of free time. From the moment he put down the Meng family’s documents last night, Zhou Yanci had stopped dealing with their affairs.
In the meantime, Meng Yingrong had called him countless times, but Zhou Yanci ignored every call. After finishing work, Zhou Yanci left his office, only to run into Meng Yingrong, who was impeccably dressed, carrying a handbag, and rushing toward him.
“Zhou Yanci!”
Meng Yingrong was furious, her face barely containing her anger. “Didn’t I tell you to help Xuanyu? Why haven’t you sent me the documents yet? Your grandfather wants to see the results tonight! What is Xuanyu supposed to do?”
Zhou Yanci looked at his mother calmly.
“I have limited energy,” Zhou Yanci said. “I can’t handle the affairs of two companies at the same time.”
Meng Yingrong grew even angrier. “Then just work overtime! If you put in more hours, you could solve it!”
Zhou Yanci laughed at himself. “Yes, working overtime would solve it. But did you know that when the Meng family was on the verge of bankruptcy, I worked three days and nights without sleep to save it? Mother, do you think I haven’t worked enough overtime?”
Meng Yingrong was momentarily speechless, feeling a twinge of guilt. “It’s not like that now. It’s just a few projects…”
“A few projects?” Zhou Yanci sneered. “But for those few projects, during my week in Li City, I slept less than ten hours.”
These were things Zhou Yanci had never told Meng Yingrong before.
He had always believed that this was his duty, that he was born to work for the Zhou Corporation and the Meng family.
But it wasn’t until last night that Zhou Yanci realized there were people who actually cared about him, who worried about whether he was sleeping well.
Zhou Yanci: “From now on, aside from collaborations with the Zhou Corporation, I won’t be involved in the Meng family’s affairs.”
Meng Yingrong was at a loss for words. She felt a sense of losing control over her son, who had grown up. “Fine, I’ll handle the Meng family’s matters myself,” Meng Yingrong said, trying to retreat strategically. “But don’t forget what I told you about the marriage alliance! Lu Wanning has returned to the country. You two should meet. Zhou Hongsheng, that old-fashioned man, won’t care about your marriage. It’s up to me to manage this…”
Zhou Yanci’s eyes were filled with mocking laughter, cold and cutting. “You didn’t care about me years ago. Don’t start now.”
Meng Yingrong stomped her foot in frustration. “I’m your mother! Do you even realize what you’re saying?”
Zhou Yanci looked at Meng Yingrong, his light-colored eyes reflecting her face. “Only because you’re my mother. Otherwise, do you think you’d still be standing here? I saved the Meng family from the brink of collapse, and I can destroy it overnight. You’d better think carefully.”
Zhou Yanci’s voice was calm, but beneath that calmness lay countless sharp blades, all aimed at Meng Yingrong.
Meng Yingrong suddenly realized that Zhou Yanci was already 27 years old. He was no longer the young boy who used to eagerly await her praise. On the way home, Zhou Yanci rarely didn't look at documents.
He leaned against the car, eyes closed, and music was playing in the Bluetooth earphones he wore.
Zhou Yanci didn't listen to pop music. His playlist was full of long - lingering classical music. But today, he was listening to the songs shared by Yan Xi on her WeChat Moments. Some of them were quite nice, while others were so chaotic that they gave him a headache.
The Rolls - Royce drove on the overpass for more than twenty minutes and finally stopped at the entrance of Linjiang Community.
Zhou Yanci opened his eyes and looked at the vast river outside the car window.
"Why did we come to the apartment?"
His mood was clearly unhappy.
The driver was startled. "Mr. Zhou, didn't you scold me yesterday for sending you back to the old mansion? I thought you'd stay in the apartment tonight!"
Zhou Yanci frowned.
The driver became even more nervous and tentatively asked, "Do you want to go back to the old mansion? But the apartment and the old mansion are located in the south and north respectively, and there's a traffic jam now. It'll take at least two hours to get back!" At the Zhou family's old mansion
The light shone through the flower - patterned window onto the white wall of the courtyard, casting a mottled and shaky tree shadow.
Yan Xi paced back and forth in the hall, waiting for Zhou Yanci to come home.
Now the luck value was stuck at 29.6. Yan Xi thought she should try to gather as much as possible. There were still more than ten hours until tomorrow night's birthday banquet. By scraping together here and there, maybe she could reach 30!
Assistant Sun posted a WeChat Moment half an hour ago, saying he was going to a bar to have fun. Since Assistant Sun had already got off work, Zhou Yanci must have finished work too, right? Yan Xi squatted on the bluestone steps in front of the hall and sent a WeChat message to Zhou Yanci: [A cat peeping out.jpg]
[Mr. Zhou, will you come back to the old mansion tonight?]
A few seconds later, Zhou Yanci replied: [I'm back at the apartment.]
"Ouch!"
Yan Xi suddenly stood up and slumped as she stared at the words on the chat interface. "Why did he go back to the apartment!"
The system said, "Host, you should understand that it's normal for Zhou Yanci to go back to the apartment! The old mansion is so far from the group. It takes two hours to travel there and back even without traffic jams. For Zhou Yanci, time is money!"
Yan Xi sighed. "Is he going to work overtime in the apartment?" The system replied, "Of course he is. He moved out of the old mansion and into the Linjiang penthouse just to squeeze out more time for work!"
[According to Zhou Yanci's character design, he's just a workaholic who only focuses on work!] Yan Xi looked pitiful. She inexplicably had a feeling that she wouldn't be able to earn any luck value tomorrow morning.
Yan Xi continued typing: [I've learned a set of massage techniques. It's great for sleep. Why did you go back to the apartment? Now you won't be able to experience it!] Zhou Yanci: [Really?]
Yan Xi: [Sure. I've practiced for a long time. I just tried it on Xiaobudian!] Xiaobudian was the turtle raised by Zhou's father, with a shell more than half a meter in diameter. Zhou Yanci: [I suspect Xiaobudian will have trouble sleeping tonight.]
Yan Xi: [No way. It's lying on its back in the pool right now, sleeping soundly.]
Zhou Yanci: …
Yan Xi: [Really, believe me!]
A few minutes passed, and Zhou Yanci didn't reply.
Yan Xi kept sending messages tirelessly: [You're not going back to work again, are you?] [Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Didn't your primary school teacher teach you that?] [Alas, working overtime can really lead to a sudden death!]
[Hey! Mr. Zhou? Mr. Zhou?]
[Zhou Yanci? Zhou Yanci?]
Suddenly, a call - incoming notification popped up on the screen.
Before Yan Xi could react, her typing hand accidentally touched the answer button. Zhou Yanci's voice came from the phone. "It's me."
His voice was a bit deep and he seemed to be out of breath. It was unclear what he was doing. Yan Xi blinked. "Mr. Zhou... You're not calling me just to warn me because you find me annoying, are you?"
"I'm just being a bit chatty, but I really want to care about you!" Zhou Yanci said, "If you want to care, why don't you say it in person?"
Yan Xi pouted. "I want to, but you're not at the old mansion. I have no other choice."
There was a silence on the other end of the phone. There seemed to be the sound of footsteps. For a long time, no one spoke.
"Mr. Zhou? Mr. Zhou?"
Yan Xi looked at the phone in confusion. "Why is there no sound again? Zhou Yanci, you're not going to disappear again, are you?"
"Turn around."
The voice on the phone finally rang.
And this time, Yan Xi not only heard the voice on the phone, but also the voice behind her.
What do you think?
