Chapter 1028: This Is Robbery
The day went by without anything happening for once and the sun was beginning to dip in the horizon so we were looking for a place to camp now.
The path ahead was a series of turns through the forest which should then lead to a clearing so that was where we were aiming to camp for the night.
As we turned around the bend in the path, the convoy suddenly pulled to a stop.
At first I thought it might have been because we had reached our destination but I heard shouts coming from the front and it definitely did not seem like there wasn't a problem.
I stood up to get a better view of what was going on and I realised there were a couple of people blocking the road and waving weapons around at the lead wagon.
Damn… Those are bandits aren't they? So after dealing with monsters, we need to deal with bandits…
I got ready to jump out when I saw movement from the trees and several bandits jumped out of the bushes to appear behind our wagon, clearly having been placed there in order to cut off our escape route.
"Nobody move! All of you stay right where you are!" One of them shouted while waving his sword at us.
Several more bandits appeared from within the trees and these were holding bows with their arrows pointed at us.
"Are you kidding me…" I heard Kabir mutter under his breath.
Well… I kind of agree with you right there… We're getting attacked once a day at this point… Though I guess we've only been on the road for two days at this point so there's that.
But this is a road that's quite deep inside the Kingdom so it's already weird that the security is so bad. I should probably send a letter or something to Justinia to complain about this.
The bandit that was closest to our wagon and pointed his sword at me, "You! Hands up! Everyone, hands up! No one reach for anything! We have archers pointed at all the wagons! Anyone tries anything we'll fire!"
Another bandit shouted out at us, "We only want your money! Not your life! Cooperate with us and you can leave with your lives!"
Ok… This is different… Or at least I didn't expect the bandits to be telling this to us.
Someone then came from the front and I realised it was a female Mahun with red hair that was tied up in a messy ponytail while her left eye was covered with an eyepatch. On her side was a large falchion and judging by the way she was walking amongst the bandits, I'm pretty sure she was the leader.
"Listen here everyone! We're not unreasonable people! This is a toll road we're managing! Two Small Bronze Coins per person! That's all we're asking! Pay the toll and you can go! No one will be hurt as long as long as we get the money!"
Huh… Well this was certainly surprising…
They weren't really asking for all our money but they just want two Creas per person as a toll.
It's still quite a substantial amount of money but it's not an amount that normal people wouldn't be able to pay I guess… Especially when you're living in this part of the Kingdom.
I looked at my girls and it was clear that they wanted to fight instead of obeying and if these bandits had only targeted us and no one else, I would have totally agreed with them and just attacked the bandits instead.
But right now, we were not alone and if we did anything, someone else in the other wagons might die and it would be because of us.
"Girls… Just cooperate," I ordered, keeping my voice low to avoid being overheard.
The girls looked at me in surprise.
"Eh? But Sister Aster? We can beat them…" Odeta protested, whispering back to me.
"We fight them, we'll drag everyone else in as well and they might not be able to fight as well as we do and end up getting killed. Anyway, it's just two Creas per person, we can afford it."
Emilia hissed from the side, "Giving away money without any intention of making a profit? I don't think that's a good idea, Boss…"
"Well… If you see it another way, we're buying everyone's lives right now so that's worth it, right?"
"Our lives are worth much more than them. In my eyes, they aren't even worth a single Decrea."
Come now, Emilia… At least don't say it in front of them…
Anyway, if we really wanted to, I could always just call out my Shadow Guards to deal with them but there was no way I was going to show that in front of these people so I'm not going to do that.
The bandits started collecting money from us and it seems like the merchant and the travellers on the other wagon were relieved that they could just pay that fee and be allowed to pass.
I bet the merchant leader was the most happy about it because he didn't even need to lose his cargo.
The bandits then started collecting the required coins from us under the watchful eye of the bandit leader.
"Hold on," The red haired bandit leader called out, pointing at the merchant leader. "You're the owner of the caravan right?"
"Eh? Ah… Yes, I am," Our client sputtered, surprised at being singled out.
"Five Creas for you to pass then."
"Ah… Ah… I understand…"
I guess she's making him pay more because she knows this guy could definitely afford it.
When it was our wagon's turn to pay up, Christos hesitated before looking at the bandit leader.
"Umm… Is it possible to not count my children? Needing to pay for four of us… That is a pretty big amount…"
The bandit collecting the money seemed to be unsure and turned to their leader.
I thought she would agree to his request but she crossed her arms and tilted her chin at him, "Two Creas per person, children included. If you can't pay, someone else can pay for you."
I jumped in, "I'll pay for them."
The bandit leader shifted her gaze towards me and smirked, "Oh ho? Seems like being a Mercenary pays pretty well huh? For you to be able to offer to pay for someone else without a second thought."
I ignored her comments and counted out twenty four Creas before passing it to the bandit, paying for everyone in the wagon.
The bandit leader crossed her arms, "Oh wow, we have a rich girl don't we? Hey you! Come down here!"
I narrowed my eyes at her, "We already paid so we're all free to go aren't we? Are you going back on your word?"
"Oh they are all free to go. I just want to talk to you a little bit. That's not a problem right?"
"What if I said no?"
"Hmm? Then I might be very sad… And you don't want to know what I would do when I become sad."
The bandits that were pointing their bows at the other wagons shifted slightly, her threat clear.
I was wondering if I could create an air wall fast enough to block their arrows but then decided that if she was going to call me down, it would also put me at a closer distance to the leader which gives me a chance to take her hostage if we need to.
"Fine."
My girls looked at me in alarm but I jumped out of the wagon before they could stop me.
But what I didn't expect was for all of them to jump out after me and arrange themselves protectively behind me.
"Ah, what's this? Are you all planning to fight after all?" The red haired bandit asked, raising an eyebrow at us.
"Girls, I'll be fine… I'm not alone, remember?" I assured them, nodding at my shadow.
"Mistress… Please at least allow me to accompany you," Katsuki begged.
"It's alright… You can just watch me from the wagon. I'll shout if I need help, Katsuki."
I could tell she was extremely reluctant but since it was a direct order from me, she eventually relented and bowed her head, "Understood, Mistress."
The other girls also returned to the wagon under the bandits' watchful gaze while the red haired leader beckoned for me to follow her.
I thought she would just move us a short distance away but she actually brought me into the forest where no one else could see us.
I instructed my Shadow Guards to use the cover of the trees to spread out into the forest, all of them ready to take down the bandits at a moment's notice while I kept my eye on the bandit leader.
After walking for a bit more, the bandit suddenly turned back to look at me, prompting me to get ready to attack.
But what I didn't expect was for her to clasped her hands together with a look of desperation on her face.
"I really, really like you! Please have sex with me!"
…
What.
What do you think?
