What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?

Chapter 495: There's Some Political Manoeuvring Involved...

The guards watching the elevators gave us weird looks as we walked into the elevator while carrying all the guns we looted from the dead thugs.

Of course, we ignored them and I think they were just jealous that we got so much loot from a single job~

To be honest, the pay was pretty trash since it only paid us eight thousand Credits to clear that place out… Which was why I wanted to take all the loot to sell them for more Credits.

Under normal circumstances, I might not have even taken a job like this anymore but we needed the recognition from the job to grant us access to the lower ring after they cleared this ring.

So unfortunately, that means we're going to need to take a few more jobs like this before we can actually deal with what we're here for.

From what I've seen in the news that is being reported around the station, it seems like they intend to deal with the problems on the second ring first before they move to the first ring.

At the rate this is going, I think my challenge with Valiea will occur before we even get there…

That reminds me… I should probably go and take some time to practice at their place before the challenge day.

You won't be catching me resting on my laurels thinking that I didn't need to practice anymore.

I know my perks might give me an advantage but I still need to figure out a routine that could catch the crowd's attention especially when most of them are on Valiea's side.

Thinking about all the things we're facing right now, I couldn't help but let out a sigh, "How long is this thing going to take…"

Amber giggled, "Why? Are you already getting bored of shooting up weak thugs who can't even afford personal shields?"

"That's not it… I never planned for us to stay here for that long… I thought we would only be here for a few days at most before we would move on from here…"

Lea turned to me with a look of concern, "Is there something wrong with staying here for long, Mistress?"

"Not exactly… Don't mind me, I'm just whining at the moment," I admitted.

The two guards also in the elevator with us looked at each other but said nothing.

The elevator let out a ding and we stepped out of it, only to come face to face with several heavily armed guards accompanying an important looking person wearing an expensive looking suit.

He was wearing shades that hid his eyes and his hair was half-shaved on one side while a part of his jaw was replaced with some kind of cybernetic implant.

I sensed the two guards behind me stiffening when they saw him so this guy not only looked important, but was probably actually someone important.

He tilted his head towards us slightly, "Are you Mercs from… Teran Mercenary Company?"

His slight pause made me believe he was reading our name that was being projected on his glasses.

I nodded at him, "Yes. I'm pretty sure we registered ourselves already and were granted access to the lower rings?"

He straightened himself, "Don't worry, this isn't about that. I have a personal request for you if you are willing to take it. Follow me."

"Without first knowing who you are?"

He raised an eyebrow, "You don't know who I am? Ah… You aren't a resident here. I'm one of the station's administrators. Does that put you at ease?"

Err… To be honest, not exactly… But it does tell me that it would be a better idea to follow him than not to so I guess we should.

But…

I looked down at the pile of guns I was carrying, wondering if he would let me drop this off at our ship first or at least leave it somewhere instead of lugging them to where he wanted to bring us.

He noticed my gaze and motioned for one of the guards to come over before he pointed at our direction.

"Get some people to carry that to where she needs them to be."

The guard saluted at his order so I gladly dumped the guns on the guards and told them to deliver all of them to our ship.

The supposed station administrator then turned on his heels and started walking towards another elevator while his guards surrounded us to corral us towards the elevator as well.

I recognised that elevator as one that would bring us up to the upper rings so I assumed that this guy was telling the truth about his identity as a station administrator.

The ride up was even more awkward than the one we took with just the two guards as I did my best to look nonplussed about the group of guards surrounding us while standing behind the guy.

The elevator finally came to a stop and we were led out to pristinely clean streets with barely anyone walking around.

This must be either the highest ring or at least one of them…

A limousine looking vehicle the size of a tank was waiting on the road for us and the guy led us to it with a well dressed chauffeur opening the doors for us.

The door didn't swing outwards but merely popped out from the vehicle frame before sliding to the side, which looked cool to me for some reason.

Inside the car was even more luxurious than I thought as it looked more like a study room than a car's interior.

There was a sitting area with two couches and even a study table as well as a blank wall separating the driver side that served as a projection screen that seemed to be playing some video of some news anchor at the moment.

He gestured for us to take a seat at the couch before he moved to the study table, prompting the door to close shut.

He waited until the car began to move. We barely felt the motion and only knew we were moving when we saw the scenery shift outside the tinted windows of the car.

"Let me introduce myself again. I am Deviminio, one of the station administrators of this station. I would like to apologise for taking you here like this but I do not know who I can trust at the moment."

I nodded at him to return his greeting, "It's fine. I assume there's something you need from us?"

He tapped on his desk and the video on the wall stopped and changed to display a news article about a Pirate Lord being defeated by a bunch of Mercs.

Guess this guy was trying to show us how he came to know of us.

He looked pointedly at me, "Yes. I must say, I'm quite honoured to meet the Mercs who managed to take down a Pirate Lord on their own."

I shook my head, finding no hide it, "We didn't do this on our own. There were also other Mercs and even the military was involved."

"Hmm… Humble as well, that's definitely rare. I suppose you don't want me to waste your time so I will get right to the point. I believe you are all aware of the situation in the bottom rings of this station, yes?"

"If you mean the gangs instigating a gang war then yes."

"But do you know why it happened?"

I looked at Amber and she took over the conversation, "Wasn't it because one of the bigger gangs screwed up a raid which prompted the other gangs to try and take some territory for themselves which ended up escalating to a fight amongst all the gangs?"

Deviminio shook his head, "That is quite close but not the full story. Are you aware of what my position means?"

I shrugged, "I assume that you are managing this station?"

"In a way, yes. There is an overall Station Master that is overseeing all the main functions of the station but since this station has expanded to have multiple rings, it has gotten too big in size for just one person to manage so people like me exist. I am just one out of around two dozens of station administrators.

"Ok… So what does that have to do with anything?"

"We all know the lower rings are being run by gangs and low lives but the important parts of the station that keep most of the place running are located down there. Which is why we are in a rather delicate position where we can't antagonise the gangs too much. However, I have come to realise that some of my colleagues have been conspiring with those gangs by becoming their sponsor in order to claim influence over the bottom rings and take control over the crucial systems so that they can blackmail the rest of us into following them."

He then leaned forward and steepled his fingers in front of him, "My request is this… I will give you the names and locations of these gangs being sponsored by my colleagues… You will go there and wipe them out… And I will pay you very nicely. What do you think?"

Oh geez… We really walked into some kind of conspiracy, didn't we?
