Chapter 492: The State Of The Second Ring
So… The next morning came along and we found a bunch of requests that had gone up on the Guild request site targeting the lower rings and we decided to take one of them for ourselves.
I did another check on my shotgun before strapping it behind my back and nodding at the girls.
"Alright… So let's go over the plan again, shall we?"
Assembled in front of me was Amber and Lea, both of them also doing their own checks on their weapons.
Ries was staying behind to work on the power armour while Mara would be trying to gather information from the people on the upper rings just to see if she can get something helpful for us.
"The job we took is to just clear out some of those thugs from a building they took over. Shouldn't be too hard and there should only just be a few of them, right?"
Amber nodded, "That's the information given in the hustle, yes."
"Right. And from what I understand, this is just the station administrators trying to probe and see the seriousness of the situation but also unwilling to make use of their own security which is why they are using Mercs, correct?"
Both girls nodded again.
"And if we do well, we might be tasked with bigger jobs that involve going to the lower rings as well?"
They nodded once more.
I grinned, "Alright, then let's go make some money."
I led the way out of the ship and we went straight to the station's elevator, pressing the button that would bring us to the lower rings.
We had to do an elevator switch when we reached the centre ring which we found were guarded by several armed guards standing in front of the elevators.
One of them held up a hand as we approached, "Destination?"
"Ring Two," I answered easily.
He noted our weapons, "You three Mercs?"
I nodded before tapping on my Codex to project the screen of the request we accepted to clear out the thugs.
He took a moment to read it before nodding, "Head inside, show that to the guards in there as well."
He motioned for his colleagues to move away and we went past the improvised checkpoint and stepped into the elevator.
Another two armed guards were also standing inside, none of them said anything and merely just stared at me.
I did as the guard outside asked and showed them the screen.
One of them beckoned for us to enter and he pressed the button to move the elevator for us.
It was honestly quite an awkward elevator ride as the two guards just stood there looking at us while we descended.
And no, they weren't ogling at us but more like making sure that we weren't doing anything suspicious.
The door slid open and we stepped out where another security checkpoint had been set up, this one very heavily defended with more guards and automated turrets.
Ok… I thought this was supposed to be some minor scuffle but it kind of felt like I was walking into a war zone now…
"Mercs? Register here," Another guard called out to us.
We went over to him and did just that, which I learned was so that they don't shoot us by accident when we returned.
Truth be told… The fact that they were so efficient with this basically told me that this most likely happened before and some other Merc probably got shot or killed which made them implement these processes.
Well… As long as we don't get shot, I wasn't going to complain.
Once we were cleared, we stepped out of the checkpoint and out into the street of the station's second ring.
I'm gonna be honest… This place looks like crap…
No, it not only looks like crap, it smells like crap too.
There must be some kind of air filter thing going on in the checkpoint back there because the moment I stepped out of there, the smell of rust and fire hit me like a brick.
While the rings we had been to earlier weren't that pristine as compared to the one we went to shop for underwear, this place was on a whole other level.
It had the look of an industrial district… If the district had been bombed, burned, shat on and then patched up with pieces of broken metal and whatever other trash could be found.
The only 'good' thing was that the place wasn't cramped up like the place we had gone to buy guns but had actual streets on them… Only that the streets were also clustered with trash and car wreckages that had been stripped for parts, leaving only the broken pieces of the frames behind.
Even from here, I could hear gunshots ringing out from different places and the people that were walking along the streets barely even paid attention to them like they were already used to such noises.
I think the only thing stopping them from trying to escape from here were the automated turrets that were deployed both outside the checkpoint and above on the walls that seemed to have already been there from the start.
If it was already this bad on this ring… I wondered how bad the lowest ring would look like?
Right… I guess we should get to work then…
Using my Codex to check the map, I started leading the way towards the location of the building we had to clear.
Not even a few steps forward and my foot knocked against something solid on the ground.
Looking down, I realised I had kicked a severed prosthetic arm… And it looked like it was only recently cut off as well since the fingers on the arm were still twitching.
I guess I should just be glad that it wasn't an actual arm.
We continued towards the location of the building which I realised was only just two streets down from where we were.
I'm guessing that's why they wanted this place cleared so desperately that they would post a Merc hustle for it since it was too close to the elevators for comfort but too far away that they don't want to risk their own lives going there to clear it.
Probably since the guards all wore distinct uniforms and stepping out wearing that might caused them to get jumped by the residents on this floor.
I kept my hand on my pistol holster as we continued walking towards the building.
A few of the pedestrians gave us an odd look when we walked past but they didn't approach us and we just ignored them.
As we reached the first street and were just about to cross it, several people ran out from one of the alleyways and started shooting behind them.
A few gunshots came from the alleyway itself and one of them got blasted in the head and his brains were blown out of his skull.
"Shit, shit!! Get back!! Find cover!" One of them shouted.
Another shot rang out and one of the other thugs who wasn't fast enough got shot through the leg, the guy letting out a cry of pain before stumbling and falling onto the ground.
He tried to pull himself up but a barrage of bullets came right after that and two went through his chest and another went through his neck, killing him.
Despite that scene, I realised that the passers-by merely took a look in the direction of the gunshots before going back to doing their own things, completely ignoring it.
Is it really that bad here?
"Should we take cover?" I asked.
Amber shrugged, "I'm pretty sure our shields can handle stray shots from them and if they do fire in our direction, we can just claim self defence and shoot them back."
Right…
So we just remained where we were and watched the fight since we had to walk past them and I most certainly don't want to be caught up in that fight if I could help it.
The thugs ran down the street and took cover behind a car wreck while training their weapons at the alleyway.
A group of four people came running from the alleyway and I realised those people must be Mercs as well since they were better dressed and armed than the thugs there.
They stacked up against the wall before one of them turned invisible and another raised his arm to materialise a translucent energy shield in front of him before stepping out.
The thugs started firing but the shield blocked all of the bullets from reaching their target.
The other two followed behind the shield guy and returned fire on the thugs, slowly advancing towards them under the hail of bullets.
The invisible guy suddenly reappeared behind the thugs and I got to see him pointing his dual pistols at the group before he let loose a flurry of shots, blowing each of the thugs in the head in just a second.
"Guess the other Mercs are already doing work here~ We better hurry in case someone else steals our target~" Amber told me cheerfully.
Right… Let's move then.
What do you think?
