Chapter 288: Powerful Crimson Energy
It felt like time was frozen as Zaroth's mind struggled to processes how he could fuck up that badly in such short amount of time. The only thing that seemed to remind him that he was in fact not frozen in time was Luna's laughter echoing across in his head.
'I can see now why she was holding her laughter all the way here, she must have realized what was about to happen but did not warn me beforehand, this woman!' he cursed in his mind.
Out of the three of them, the one that seemed to break out of the collective gaze first was Betty as she quickly started to get dressed, but due to the fact that she was panicking she fumbled a few times and nearly fell to the floor.
Putting a hand over her head and feeling how a vein in her forehead was about to burst, Midnight spoke, "Zaroth... how come, when you were telling the tale of everything you've been doing while you were here, you didn't think it was important to mention that you've slept with another woman?" The playful tone in her voice was long gone as she was quite clearly pissed.
Betty finally finished getting dressed and looked at Zaroth with a mix of expectation and unease. She knew, based on his words, that he was involved with three other women, but she hadn't expected to meet one of them so soon — and certainly not while she herself had been completely naked. This had to be one of the worst first impressions she could have made!
'Hey, hey!' Luna began to call out, barely able to contain her laughter, 'This situation is perfect, is it not? Why don't you test your luck and try to go for a threesome! With a horny brain as yourself, this must surely be one of your fantasies, no?!' After she was done teasing she burst into laughter once more.
Going back to his earlier thoughts, Zaroth was glad he still had his mask on, as no one could see his current expression—even he wasn't sure what kind of face he was making.
'Luna, come on, I admit it, I'm an idiot! Can you help me fix this mess?!' Zaroth requested her help.
With a sigh Luna spoke, 'Sure, you are my one and only master so how could I not help you? The situation is pretty bad at the moment, so I believe the best course of action is for you to repeat exactly what I'm about to tell you. Word for word.'
Left with no choice and trusting Luna, Zaroth opened his mouth and repeated after her.
"Don't look at me like this is some kind of grand revelation. You both knew that I have been with multiple women, and you were both fine with it, so you can't claim this is something unexpected,"
Luna's plan was simple: given Zaroth's personality and those of Betty and Midnight, the best course of action was to act arrogant — and at the same time, make it seem obvious that something like this was bound to happen eventually.
Still, making it out to look like this wasn't Zaroth's fault in the first place would not be right, so she added, "Of course, this situation is due to my miscalculation, as such I wish to apologize about that."
A few seconds passed in silence after Zaroth finished repeating what Luna had told him. Betty took a few steps toward the door. "I-I won't bother you now," she said with a slight bow before exiting the house. In all honesty, she felt a spark of rivalry when she saw the woman with Zaroth, but she was reluctant to act on her feelings, fearing how strong the woman was. As such, she left quickly.
This left Zaroth and Midnight alone.
She carefully observed him with a raised eyebrow, 'These words that he spoke did not sounded like him, was this Luna's doing?' Midnight wondered but in the end decided to not question it.
Taking a few steps towards Zaroth who had just removed his mask, she reached out and flicked Zaroth's forehead.
He felt a slight stinging pain but did not complain, it didn't feel right to do so.
"I know I said I was fine with you having a harem or whatever… but I wasn't expecting to walk in on something like this. Honestly, my mood's kind of ruined now," she admitted, her voice low.
He could only sigh in dejection at himself, 'She made the effort to come see me… and this is how I welcome her? I really have to step up my game,' he thought bitterly.
But judging the way Midnight was looking at him it was obvious that it wasn't going to be today, so he summoned Nightshade hoping that this was going to lift her spirits a bit.
Throwing a glance at Nightshade, Midnight asked, "So you said that the panther will help me using its new power? What exactly can it do?"
Nodding to Nightshade, Zaroth watched as she dove into her shadow. In the next moment, she emerged, dragging out the corpse of one of the scouts she had killed during the army's attack. She didn't stop there—by the time she was done, five lifeless bodies lay scattered on the ground.
"I assumed it would be easier to show rather than to explain, you can now more or less guess what she could do right?" Zaroth said.
Midnight studied the bodies with curiosity. They looked fresh — as if they had been killed just seconds ago. Meaning whatever Nightshade stored inside her shadow was somehow preserved in a frozen state.
'At least this should lift her mood a bit. These corpses should make a nice meal,' Zaroth thought, watching as Midnight's teeth began to sharpen into fangs, her gaze hungry as she stared at the bodies. He felt like this wouldn't be enough to fully fix her mood, but it was a start.
However rather than hunger, there was another reason as to why Midnight was reacting like this. Out of the five corpses, four looked perfectly normal as they were ready to be devoured by her. But there was one exception: a young woman who was barely twenty years old, with pink hair. She was radiating a powerful crimson energy.
Moving by instinct, Midnight approached her and bit deeply into her throat, but contrary to Zaroth's expectations, the girl's body did not seem to get paler as this is how it would look like when Midnight would drink blood from a corpse.
It was safe to say that Zaroth was intrigued and did not interrupt.
After a few minutes, Midnight retracted her fangs from the girl's throat and took a few steps back.
"What did you do?" Zaroth asked, watching how she stared at the lifeless corpse with intense focus.
He did not have an idea what was going on...
That was until the girl's body suddenly shuddered and then moved. Placing a shaky hand on the floor and pushing herself up, she rose to her feet, staring back at Midnight.
Zaroth, seeing that Midnight had just managed to resurrect somebody from the dead, had only a single thought in his head,
'What the actual fuc-'
What do you think?
