Chapter 249: Death Detection
Disease Control Center (Center for illness Control)
The Center was a special institution jointly established by Hippocrates Hospital and Cesimani, responsible for the containment management and related handling of special epidemic events.
Of course, since it’s connected with Cesimani, it goes without saying that it isn’t exactly a pleasant place.
A large portion of humans, and even gentlemen, who were requested to be sent to the Disease Control Center would disappear, and even those who managed to come out alive remained tight-lipped about what happened there.
The [Death Plague] that broke out in Levinhome was classified by the organization as a First Level Plague, and the gentlemen who were lucky enough to leave alive were subjected to the highest level of comprehensive checks, control, and quarantine measures.
Even if they passed all the tests with no pathogenic factors, individuals were prohibited from entering Zion for at least half a year and were even required to live in isolation in a confined space.
There were more escapees from Levinhome than just Yi Chen and his two companions,
Some gentlemen stationed at the edge of the city chose to evacuate before the outbreak of the Death Plague, with a total of 23 people fleeing.
All of them had already been gathered at the Control Center, undergoing deep inspections that were unknown to the public and even somewhat contrary to a gentleman’s character.
Yi Chen and the other two were among the last of the escapees. While walking through the mountain foothill passage with these people in biohazard suits, they could clearly hear the cries of agony emanating from the depths.Jin, as a member of Cesimani, had naturally heard some things about this place.
Being brought into such a place, she was understandably upset and spoke without reserve,
“It seems they’ll be conducting some inhumane tests on us. If I feel uncomfortable during the process, I might not be able to control myself and could lash out at you.
If I accidentally kill you, don’t blame me.”
Her words were, of course, overheard by the personnel of the Control Center,
The leading person immediately turned their head around, glaring with eyes hidden beneath a breathing mask.
Little did they know that this look would discern from Jin a nearly tangible killing intent. The concentrated killing intent seemed to ooze out like rotten flesh mud from behind Jin, threatening to envelop and dissolve the person into the same meaty muck.
“Look at me one more time, and I’ll gouge out your eyeballs!”
As Jin uttered these words, Little Grape squeezed out from Yi Chen’s shoulder, “Who’s talking about grapes? Can I eat them?”
For a moment, the atmosphere at the scene became tense, but Yi Chen remained silent.
He didn’t restrain Jin’s behavior because he could also feel the resentment filling the place, and because of the development of his Death Ability, Yi Chen could even hear the layered lamentations of the dead.
“Reagan, what do you think?”
“I’m willing to accept some basic checks in compliance with the regulations. If it goes beyond that, I’ll contact the director to see what he has to say.”
“Hmm.”
With that, the three were led to the depths beneath the mountain, where Reagan had already sensed the fluctuations in electrical power. To his surprise, there was a sizable Power Station built below.
Various sealed metal containment chambers were embedded in the walls, and there were also a row of operating tables placed side by side.
Some of the containment chambers emitted continuous cries of pain.
Just as the situation grew increasingly tense and seemed on the brink of combat… Hiss! Steam gushed out.
The hydraulic door directly in front of everyone suddenly released a sufficient amount of steam, reaching pressure equilibrium before the metal door slowly opened, revealing an unsettling aura seeping from inside.
Jin instinctively reached for the hilt of the sword on her back, while Reagan took his hands out of his coat pockets.
However, this dangerous aura felt somewhat familiar to Yi Chen.
A doctor wearing a medieval beak mask emerged, with the seemingly medieval mask actually incorporating modern metallic elements around the eyes and nostrils, and wearing the white coat of a modern doctor he stepped out barefoot.
“Hmm? Doctor Visari!”
The person was none other than the deputy director of Hippocrates Hospital, one of the heads of the secret medicine review department, specializing in Death, Andre Vissari.
Visari also recognized immediately this young gentleman whom he had seen several times and greatly admired.
“William Behrens? What were you doing in a place like Levinhome?”
“I received a Super Five Star mission in Zion and went with my teammates. Based on the investigation conducted with Barry Bessalius in the city, we have ascertained the manner of spread of the ‘Death Plague,’ the necessary medium, as well as the process of resurrection of the dead.
Jin and Reagan came to rescue me at the last minute from the outside. It was solely thanks to their help that I barely survived.”
“You three, come with me.”
“Yes.”
Yi Chen took the lead and walked forward, signaling his teammates to follow suit.
At that moment, a voice emerged from beneath a face mask at the Disease Control Center, sounding strange:
“Doctor Visari, they arrived back very late, and there’s a high chance they were exposed to the Death Plague miasma. If they go with you without a thorough inspection, there’s the possibility of spreading the Death Plague here.”
“Should any issues arise, I will take full responsibility.
Furthermore, I have been specially dispatched to oversee the control of the ‘Death Plague.’ I have the ultimate decision-making authority, and if you have any objections to the decisions I make, remember to submit them in writing.”
“Yes…”
…
Once in Doctor Visari’s private office, Yi Chen gave a detailed oral account of their situation, while Doctor Visari took notes.
When it came to the part about Yi Chen single-handedly killing the vice dean of the Sunshine Hospital and the betrayal and possession of Helvoye by the white-robed Lotson, Doctor Visari paused briefly.
“William, if you report these words to the higher-ups, they will certainly subject you to a ‘Memory Review’. After all, there has never been an incident within the organization where a human has killed a Transcender.
I can tell you’re not lying, but I also find it hard to imagine how you defeated Evatt.
He passed the formal examination by the doctors, and I was present as one of the examiners. He had a talent for controlling the lines, and if he had survived, he would have made a fine doctor.”
Yi Chen himself was willing to undergo a ‘Memory Review’,
but his memories were unstable, tied to various incidents from his life.
Moreover, there was one thing from his experiences in Levinhome that could not be revealed, namely, the contact with the yellow robe.
Yi Chen, who had visited the Old World, interacted with the Duke and had a broad understanding of the worldview, synthesized the information in his brain and intuition told him this ‘yellow garment,’ closely related to the Skin Market, would significantly impact his growth and development in the future.
It could even save his life at a critical moment.
“I don’t really like others prying into my memories,
and I have read information about ‘Memory Review’ in books. This technology is not yet fully mature within the organization. Memory Review could potentially affect the brain, and my professional badge is imprinted right on the brain’s surface.
So, how about this: we won’t report these two incidents. Just submit the investigative report I prepared on the ‘Death Plague’.”
“Hmm, I personally wouldn’t recommend a Memory Review for you either.
Even without reporting these two incidents, the Death Plague report alone that you’ve provided should be enough to earn an organizational commendation.”
“Thank you, Doctor Visari.”
“However, since I’ve been assigned to manage the control of the Death Plague, I still need to examine you. No need for instruments, just allow me to touch your bodies.
Zion may eventually be consumed by the Grey Zone, but it is not yet time to perish; we still have some preparatory work to do. Let’s minimize the risk of city destruction as much as possible.”
With Yi Chen’s nod, his two teammates had little to say.
The inspection was quite simple,
involving injecting a strand of death material unique to Doctor Visari under the skin; if any Death Plague factors were present in their bodies, the two death attributes would produce a faint response.
First examining Reagan and Jin,
Doctor Visari immediately showed a shocked expression from beneath his beaked mask—not detecting the Death Plague factors but feeling a power from both that was different from the average gentlemen.
Jin’s physical form and Reagan’s spirit both far transcended the standard of their class.
Lastly,
when Doctor Visari’s hand touched Yi Chen’s shoulder, just a small amount of death material injected resonated immediately. However, the response did not stem from Death Plague factors but from Yi Chen’s innate death system.
Doctor Visari had sensed this aura of death when he first met Yi Chen, but back then, it was very weak, almost non-existent.
“Did your battle with Vice Dean Evatt awaken your death within?”
“Yes.”
“When do you plan to break through your limit? Since both your friends have already done so, I imagine you must be close as well.”
“It’s just the final push. If nothing urgent comes up, I should be able to break through within two months.”
“Good! When the time comes, remember to come to Hippocrates Hospital to see me, and bring the ‘Dusk Thin Silver Liquid’.”
“Thank you, Doctor Visari.”
“I will have your examination report submitted shortly. If there are no issues, you should be able to return to Zion in an hour.”
What do you think?
