Chapter 1476 1476: Origin of Echoes
As repayment for saving her and also for the honesty, the woman who Rex now knew as Casey—led him to the village. Both of them left the area, without the Onyx Lotus groups knowing and sneaked into the village.
Currently, the Verdant Ivy Village's condition is not good.
Rex could already see it from the few people he saw along the way who were gloomy and exhausted.
Being sieged—basically bullied by the Only Lotus Village was not a fun situation.
Hope wasn't present in this village anymore and everyone was drowned in negativity.
Due to that, Casey warned Rex to avoid being caught by anyone.
All of them are very sensitive and seeing a new face would certainly not sit well for them.
Just like the Blue Gem Village, the people here also lived in huts of varying sizes—and Casey brought him to a hut near the corner which should be her hut. Once he entered the hut, he turned to look at Casey who only poked her head inside, "I'll call the village head, wait for me here"
"Casey," Rex called her name right when she was about to leave.
Casey paused her gaze at him with both her brows raised, "Yeah? Do you need anything?"
"I'm far from a good person, I've killed many but I really came here without any bad intentions," Rex suddenly said—his face was soft, almost pleading even as he said this. "I am going to say it one more time, I only want to talk. Don't force me to do anything I don't want to"
Upon hearing this, Casey's expression turned stern as she nodded her head.
"I understand," She replied assuringly. "Don't worry, I'm not going to dupe you. I promise"
Once she said that she turned to leave—leaving Rex inside the hut waiting.
"Quite desperate I see…" the Invincible Apparition appeared and mocked.
Rex didn't even glance at him and took a seat on a small wooden chair, "It's only a façade, to make sure she wouldn't dare to try anything against me. Just wait—and see. As Amanir said, not everything needs brute force"
Several minutes later.
Casey came back with another person.
Considering that this person should be the village head, Rex was surprised to find him so young.
From the looks of it, the village head is a young man who looked completely ordinary.
"Here, this is the Verdant Ivy's head, Kody," Casey introduced, gesturing a hand towards the man.
"Pleased to meet you," Kody placed a hand on his chest and bowed politely. "I heard you saved Casey here, from Rakha. For that, you have my gratitude, Friend Rex. Also, she explained that you wanted to talk with me?"
"Yes," Rex nodded as he stood up. "I need to have three of your village's quota"
"I'm sorry?" Kody kept his friendly smile—but it was clear that he was not fond of the idea. It would be a total loss for the village to hand their quotas to strangers, "I'm afraid that kind of request is too much to fulfill, you're asking for our livelihood"
"Of course, I can give something in return," Rex answered confidently.
In terms of resources, with the System at hand, there's no way Kody will remain stubborn.
As long as he was sensible, he would hand over the quotas.
"Forget about it," Kody waved his hand, sighing heavily as he turned to leave. "I know you're strong, Casey told me how easily you dispatched Rakha who was at the Immortal Spirit 1 rank. If you're only offering to hunt for us, forget about it"
"Doing that would only make the other villages aim at us more," He added hopelessly.
Kody knew intimately that their situation was unsolvable.
Not only did a lot of their members die from attempting to raise their score, but with the Onyx Lotus Village aiming at them, the new recruits wouldn't even choose them. It was evidently clear in Kody's eyes that the Verdant Ivy village is going to decline slowly until it was disbanded.
But as he was about to exit, Rex stopped him, "How about an Echo?"
As soon as Kody heard that, he halted mid-track.
"An Echo…?" He turned around, his eyes sparkling lightly with a flicker of hope. "Are you serious?"
"Yes, I'm serious," Rex nodded. "All I'm asking is three quotas in exchange"
Rex could already grasp what the village was going through.
It was on a decline because of its population and also the lack of powerful individuals who could tackle the stronger missions from the Aurelian Fortress and also protect their village from bullies, such as the Onyx Lotus Village.
What the village needed the most right now was manpower to sustain their village.
Of course, Rex helping them hunt wouldn't do anything as he wasn't a part of the village.
But if he gave an Echo to Kody instead, that would most definitely help.
"A meager Echo wouldn't cut it," Kody said, turning around once again and studying Rex's expression to see what he was thinking. "Only a handful of us has reached the Immortal Spirit rank, and there were fewer who were at the Immortal Spirit rank and had a high-grade Soul Artifact. A high-quality Echo is the only answer for us to become strong enough and progress to the Eternal Spirit rank"
"I have a few Echoes with me," Rex declared nonchalantly. "And all of them are of high quality"
Leaning forward, he looked into Kody's eyes, "All I need is for you to tell me your Spirit Genesis"
Upon hearing this, Kody and also Casey were doubtful.
Anyone who came across multiple high-quality Echoes would not announce it like Rex did, Echoes are so valuable that declaring something like that would guarantee one to be hunted down by many spirits who are hungry for power.
Even if the Echo was not compatible, it would still be valuable for future purposes.
So naturally, both of them were doubtful that Rex has many.
Of course, Rex was lying.
His reasoning was that he got a ticket for reaching level 30 to choose an Echo.
If he knew Kody's Spirit Genesis, he could pick an Echo that would be perfect for him.
But on the other hand, he also failed to realize what he said might be misinterpreted as something else entirely. Kody glanced at Casey before back to Rex again, "Who sent you here? Trying to find out about my Spirit Genesis, I knew it… you're too good to be true"
"Wait," Rex stopped him. "It's not like that. If telling your Spirit Genesis is too much, do it vaguely"
Hearing this, Kody hesitated.
Rex was still a stranger who was asking about his Spirit Genesis.
However, for some reason, Casey believed him, "It's okay, he's not dangerous. You can tell him,"
Albeit hesitant, Kody eventually nodded.
Swoosh!
Out of nowhere, a black staff materialized from his life energy—it was his Soul Artifact.
"I have an S-grade Soul Artifact called the Fatal Staff," Kody explained, gesturing towards the black staff in his hand that exuded a dangerous aura. "It's a Hybrid-type. Because of its special abilities, the Spirit Genesis I settled on is to summon up to five clones"
Rex nodded his head.
Now that he knew about Kody's Spirit Genesis, picking the Echo became way easier.
System, open the Blue Echo Selection Ticket.
<Affirmative, opening the Blue Selection Ticket>
As soon as the ticket was opened, Rex was confronted with a selection of parchments with a description right below it that explains the Echo. He could swipe right—or left to go to the other Echo. Since he was on the spot, he decided to ask help from the System to recommend him an Echo.
Swish!
Out of the fifty-plus Echo selections, there were only three Echoes left.
Rex scanned each one briefly and determined which one was best suited for Kody.
While he was nit-picking the Echoes, Casey and Kody exchanged a look as they were both a little bit uncomfortable with the silence Rex was giving. Kody already vaguely explained his Spirit Genesis but Rex didn't say anything in response.
Instead, he turned silent but his eyes darted left and right as if he could see something they were not.
About a minute later, Rex blinked and focused on Kody again.
"Here you go," He said—extending his hand as a brilliant pale white parchment appeared out of thin air, its light illuminated the entire hut. "Since your Spirit Genesis worked with clones, this Echo, the Mimic Echo should be a good match for you"
Upon hearing this, Kody frowned and accepted the Echo.
Initially, he didn't expect much as he was still doubtful that Rex had multiple Echoes with him.
He'd only play along since Rex saved Casey and wouldn't press further even if he can't give the Echo.
Or even if he has some Echoes, they would be of the weaker Echoes.
However, based on the light this parchment was emanating, it wasn't a normal Echo.
Pausing for a second, in disbelief as he wasn't expecting much from this, Kody cleared his throat and decided to check on the Echo. He poured a little bit of his own life energy into it, enough to stimulate a reaction from the Echo.
Once he did, the light turned brighter.
Swish!
Kody blinked his eyes multiple times as a circular, magical sigil appeared in front of him.
Almost instantly, his eyes widened.
"No, this can't be…" He murmured in complete shock, recognizing the magical sigil almost instantly the moment his eyes landed on it. And at the realization, his body trembled, "It's- It's from the Niche of Duplicity! It somehow landed on my lap!"
Upon hearing this, even Casey was shocked.
She turned to look at Rex who blatantly gave this Echo away as if it was nothing.
On the other hand, Rex began to feel uneasy because of their reaction.
W- Wait a minute… Rex thought inside his head as he put on an acute smile, not knowing what to feel right now. System, you told me that the Echo inside the Blue Echo Selection Ticket is not good. So how come they were looking at it as if it was the most precious thing in the world? Did you lie to me?
<Negative: the Echo Selection Ticket has five colors and the blue color is second to the lowest>
As he was contemplating, Kody asked, "Are you sure about this?"
"Huh?" Rex raised an eyebrow questioningly.
"I'm asking, are you sure about this?" Kody repeated—his eyes repeatedly stole a glance at the Echo as if losing sight of it would cause it to disappear. "this Mimic Echo is from the Niche of Duplicity, it's a strong one-of-a-kind Echo. Are you sure you're not going to regret this?"
Rex paused for a second.
He wanted to ask about what the Niche of Duplicity was but he feared that it might blow his cover.
After all, it could be common knowledge here in the Spirit Realm.
Forcing out a smile, Rex nodded, "As long as I get the thee quotas, you can have it"
"Okay, wait here, I'll inform the others that the three quotas are given to you," Kody said and sprinted out of the hut as soon as he could, fearing Rex would pull back on the deal. A mighty Echo, he can't let it slip from his hands.
As soon as he exited, it was Rex and Casey once again.
"So…" Rex mumbled, turning towards her. "What's the Niche of Duplicity?"
"I knew it, you're not aware…" Casey shook her head and sighed. She then went to take another chair to sit, and explained, "You're an Immortal Spirit 1 rank, frankly speaking, it's surprising that you don't know about this but whatever. Echoes vary in power but the stronger ones are usually those that don't have any duplicates, a one-of-a-kind normally called Unique Echoes"
"And for these Echoes, their Origins are tracked from millennia ago," She continued.
Rex remained silent, signaling for Casey to elaborate.
"To make it simple to understand, there are only one thousand known Unique Echoes and all came from nine origins in the past," Casey lifted her hand and began counting. "First, it's the 500 Fundamental Niches, then the 300 Coffins of the Drowned, 100 Long Lost Catacombs, 40 Mausoleums of the Stars, 25 Crypt of Nature, 10 Throne of Laws, 10 Apocalyptic Beasts, 10 Altar of Gods, and lastly, 5 more Echoes that have unknown origins"
What do you think?
