Chapter 30
The beginning was with Heinzel.
Laughing in a manner completely inappropriate for the situation, she jumped into the 1,200 Norhls.
The halberd was swung recklessly, with no distinction between friend and foe. It looked like a random swing, but around ten or so Norhls exploded in the air.
Next, Luchi, who had been clicking his tongue, took action.
While not as destructive as Heinzel, his sharp swordplay severed the necks of the Norhls.
His firepower was weaker compared to Heinzel's, but his movements were efficient, saving his energy.
And then, it was my turn.
I drew the greatsword that I despised most.
I wanted to use my favorite greatsword, but...
If it were to be broken so early on... I'd be too upset, so I carefully placed it behind me.
It’s like saving the tastiest peach-flavored jelly for last.
I’ll use it when it matters most.
I felt the weight of the greatsword in my palm and swung it a few times to familiarize myself with the sensation.
Thanks to the high stance of the greatsword, I quickly adapted.
Taking a deep breath, I surveyed the area for a suitable spot where I could move comfortably.
I found a good spot right away.
Without hesitation, I threw myself into the fray.
First, one of them.
As I always did, I swung the greatsword from left to right.
The blade, which looked worn out, was surprisingly sharp.
With the sensation of slicing a cucumber, the body of the Norhl split in half.
Now, it wasn’t about copying Luchi’s movements.
I had to follow Heinzel's aggressive style.
I imagined swinging the weapon with overwhelming force.
I pictured myself in the sparring match with Luchi.
Grinding my teeth, I caught the recoil, raising the greatsword diagonally and swung it.
This time, a downward strike from top to bottom.
In one move, I destroyed four skulls.
The Norhl’s club swung towards my right leg.
I reversed my grip on the greatsword, pulling it toward my body.
The club blocked against the blade.
The sudden block sent a sharp sting through my hand.
"Ugh..."
My body began to heat up.
Gripping my teeth, I lifted the greatsword and swung it with all my might.
The sensation of tearing leather was vividly transmitted.
That made it the tenth kill.
[Graaa!]
Before I could catch my breath, a spear-wielding Norhl, stepping on its fallen kin, came charging at me.
I quickly lifted the hilt of my sword and deflected the spear.
I grabbed its open mouth with one hand and slammed it to the ground.
I cut through the Norhl's body with the greatsword and kicked the chest of another Norhl trying to stab me with a dagger.
With a crack, the spine shattered, and the Norhls that followed were knocked over.
I quickly turned around and slammed the greatsword down on the stacked Norhls.
Unpleasant liquid splattered across my body.
Wiping the blood from my lips, I glanced around.
The Norhls in their rage were indiscriminately swinging their weapons, regardless of ally or enemy.
If I use this to my advantage, it should be easier to take them down.
I steadied my breathing and charged forward again.
Shoving aside the first one charging at me, I cut down the second.
With fists, feet, legs, and head, sometimes even biting, I carved my path.
My body was soaked in blood.
The sticky sensation and the sour smell made me even more heated.
I expanded my Giga Sense.
Now, there were no Norhls behind me.
I didn’t need to worry about the back.
Only the front mattered now.
I picked up a dagger that had been left on the ground.
I made a gesture, preparing to speak...
Well, they don’t understand words...
I barked.
"Woof... arrr... woof woof!"
My provocation seemed effective as they charged at me, drooling.
I, too, wore a broad grin on my face.
Swinging my greatsword.
“Woof, woof!”
I tossed aside the greatsword that had lost all its teeth and drew the fourth one, scanning my surroundings.
There were about 50 Norhls still alive.
Of those, no more than 10 were properly standing.
Finally, the vanguard was cleared.
Wiping the blood smeared across my face, I spoke up.
"Phew... It looks like the vanguard is finally finished... Ugh, no, I mean... Ahem."
From their reactions, it seemed like no one had heard me.
That was close...
Whether it was because Luchi and Heinzel were so strong or because I was just that good.
It ended much faster than I expected.
I did use a lot of potions, though.
Still, it's fortunate it ended this quickly.
It was easier than I anticipated, so I had relaxed a bit.
If it keeps going like this, we should be able to finish without much trouble.
By the way, I wonder how things are going with Rubia...
I considered widening my Giga Sense to check the situation on the other side, but... with my current state, I didn’t feel confident about taking on the rear guard, so I decided to trust Rubia instead.
Unlike here, in the west, there was a narrow entrance, so the Norhls couldn't swarm in all at once.
If we just stand there and swing our swords, we should be able to block them just fine.
As long as they don’t run away, that is.
"Kid! How many left?"
Heinzel, apparently cooling off, approached me and shouted with a cheerful voice.
"Ah, what about you?"
"I'm at 404."
"Well, I got 410. Noah, how many have you killed?"
"I killed... 396... Ugh, 397!"
I swung my greatsword at a Norhl charging without thinking.
Its innards spilled on the ground.
"Ah, for sure, it’s 410. Now, it's 411. Noah's last!"
Luchi, using his special ability, severed the neck of a Norhl from afar who was preparing a crossbow.
"Ah, it's not over yet... Just wait...! Watch this."
I drove my greatsword into the head of a Norhl crawling on the ground.
"Now it’s almost over. Kid, how long until the rear guard arrives?"
Heinzel said while dumping a potion on his head.
Why is he pouring that on his head...?
That’s not going to grow hair, you know.
"Hmm... They'll be visible in about 5 minutes. Let’s go back and get ready... It’s gonna be awkward if it’s delayed."
"Noah, do you have the ignition stones?"
"Yeah, here... Oh, two of them are broken, but we still have plenty."
I opened my pouch and showed the ignition stones piled inside.
"Looks like you’re good for now. Alright. We don’t need more, so let’s move quickly."
"Good idea...! 405!"
Heinzel stomped his foot, causing the Norhl body beneath it to burst.
Seems like we've taken care of the moving Norhls.
Then... these greatswords...
"Ugh... Sorry, but... could you help me carry these swords?"
There were six greatswords still stuck in the ground.
The ones I discarded—three.
One in my hand.
And way over there, my cherished greatsword, waiting for me. Hehe... I’ll get there soon!
“I’ll help you, but... Kid, how are you fighting that your swords end up like this?”
Heinzel nudged one of the greatswords with his foot.
“True. Noah, you need to take better care of your weapons. You need training, it seems. A warrior's equipment is like their life. So, you should always...”
Luchi began his usual lecturing, sounding like an old man.
Ugh... Old man Luchi!
Ignoring Luchi’s words, I pulled out three more greatswords stuck in the ground.
Thanks to my high strength stat, even holding two in one hand wasn’t too bad.
Because of my height, I had to drag them, but...
"Anyway, that’s the way it is. Got it?"
"Yeah... I got it..."
I nodded and turned away.
I didn’t want to talk anymore.
Screech- screech- thud.
Screech- thud.
With two swords in each hand, I dragged four greatswords and began heading toward the village entrance.
"You're a little kid, but you handle those swords well," Heinzel remarked as he walked over with the remaining two greatswords.
"No, I’m bigger than a Norhl... About 50cm taller..."
Exactly 45.7cm, but if you round it up, it’s 50cm... so 50cm is right!
"Hahaha! Earlier, it looked like you were swinging those greatswords!"
"When you lost to me in an arm-wrestling match, it wasn’t funny either, Uncle! Geez...!"
"Right, Noah’s right. Heinzel, you have no comeback now, do you? And if you look closely, it’s not what you think. You actually use the recoil to your advantage."
"Huh? Is that so?"
Oh, Luchi has better eyes than I thought.
"Yes...! The second attack was stronger than the first. The third was even stronger than the second. Luchi uncle knows something... Maybe because it’s the same sword?"
Others might not know how my movements look, but...
I’m moving as efficiently as possible.
Sure, my height and build might seem funny, but these are moves filled with the essence of greatswordsmanship!
"Of course, greatswords are a bit... clumsy, no... awkward, but it’s still a sword, so it’s similar."
Yeah, Heinzel is too clumsy.
I’m different from him.
I fight elegantly and with style.
My techniques are dazzling!
"That’s right. A sword is... elegant, dazzling, and... sophisticated... unlike those clumsy axes..."
"Clumsy? Kid, that’s what we call bold. You’re the clumsy one."
"Me?! I’m elegant... dazzling... and... oh, sophisticated!"
Clumsy bald Heinzel!
Shiny bald-headed Heinzel!
"Although you’re ridiculous calling yourself elegant and sophisticated, you were dazzling, so I’ll let it slide."
Luchi looked me up and down as he said this.
I tilted my head and, using my Giga Sense, scanned my body.
There was nothing wrong other than a little blood splatter...
It wasn’t like I was carrying monster organs around this time.
As we continued to bicker, the earth began to tremble again as we passed the southern entrance and reached our destination.
The rear guard was howling and rushing towards us.
The sound was even louder than before, heating up my cold body once again.
"Hahaha! If that was a net, this time it’s a wave!"
"I’ve never seen monsters like this before. It’s a spectacle."
"Is this really the time for your commentary...? Hurry up and prepare! Heinzel, pass the ignition stones."
"Hmm, so I just throw them all up ahead?"
"Yeah, just throw them. Then Luchi uncle will use his special ability to light them. You can do it, right?"
"I’ve never done it before, but it doesn’t seem too hard."
Heinzel took the ignition stones, and Luchi climbed up to the lookout.
"Now... I’ll give the signal. Listen and throw them right away. Luchi uncle... don’t make any mistakes."
Hearing their responses, I expanded my Giga Sense.
A sharp pain coursed through my whole body.
I eliminated unnecessary information.
Only the group I was targeting remained in my mind.
"Kid, now?"
"Not yet... Still..."
I had to wait longer.
I couldn’t focus on those coming at the front.
I needed to cut off the middle.
Five seconds passed.
[Gruaaaa!]
When the Norhl’s howl echoed nearby.
"Bald uncle! Now!"
"Huuh- Ha!"
At my signal, Heinzel threw a pile of ignition stones, aiming them at the gas canisters we had stacked up ahead.
"Luchi uncle!"
Immediately, Luchi used his special ability to cut open the gas canisters, twisting the paths of countless ignition stones.
"Cover your ears and lower your head!"
The ignition stones collided, sparking tiny flames that triggered the gas floating in the air.
Then.
An explosion so fierce it seemed like it would tear the sky apart occurred.
The entire southern wall collapsed.
As a result, of the 7,000 Norhls, about 4,000 were crushed, burned, or exploded to death.
Only 3,000 remained.
I picked up my cherished greatsword, lying nearby.
"Argrrr...!"
Charging forward, provoking the stumbling Norhls with the aftermath of the explosion.
"Woof woof!"
What do you think?
