Dragon King's Harem Chapter 339. I'm Simply Doing What Needs To Be Done
With a subtle gesture, I signaled to one of the servants to bring out the wine.
The servant approached cautiously, mindful of the charged atmosphere in the tent. Instead of presenting the wine directly to Viperax, however, he stopped in front of the soldiers.
It was Viperax's wife who stepped forward to take the tray of wine. She delivered it to Viperax's table with a forced smile.
Viperax gestured to his wife, a silent command for her to test the wine.
With a cautious nod, she accepted the cup and brought it to her lips. She assessed the contents. I could see the tension in her expression as she took a tentative sip, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of danger.
After a moment, she seemed to relax slightly, satisfied that the wine was safe. With a small nod of reassurance, she passed the cup to Viperax, who accepted it. His gaze remained fixed on the wine, his brow furrowed in concentration.
Seizing the opportunity, I raised my own cup in a silent invitation to toast. It was a polite gesture. But beneath the surface, there was a smug satisfaction in knowing that I had been able to outmaneuver Viperax at every turn.
However, Viperax's response was not what I had expected. Instead of reciprocating the gesture, he simply brought the cup to his lips and drank deeply, his attention focused solely on the wine. It was a clear indication that he had no intention of engaging with me further.
Despite his refusal to engage, I maintained a composed exterior.
I put my cup on the table. Leaning back in my chair, I fixed my gaze on Viperax.
“About hunting Wyverns,” I began, my tone casual yet firm. “Should I help you with that too?” I asked, raising an eyebrow inquisitively. It was a straightforward question, but one loaded with implications.
After all, the recent Wyvern hunt had encroached on my territory, and I was keen to ensure that it didn't happen again.
Viperax's expression hardened at my words, his eyes narrowing in displeasure. I could see the tension in his jaw as he clenched his teeth, his grip on the wine cup tightening until cracks began to form in the glass.
"You're telling me you're gonna do something like that again?" he snapped, his tone laced with irritation.
I shrugged nonchalantly, a smirk playing at the corners of my lips. “If you don't do something quickly, maybe I will,” I replied casually, my voice tinged with a hint of warning. It was a not-so-subtle reminder that I was not afraid to take matters into my own hands if he continued to drag his feet.
He gritted his teeth, his irritation palpable. “Entering and leaving another Kingdom's territory without permission is a violation. Your portal is a violation,” he hissed, his words sharp with displeasure.
I raised an eyebrow, my expression incredulous. “May I know where that rule comes from?” I replied, my tone light but laced with skepticism.
Viperax bristled at my question, his frustration evident. “The law has been saying that for a long time!” he retorted, his voice tinged with anger.
I shrugged casually, unperturbed by his outburst. “Yes, but it also says that if in an emergency the dragon king can use his portal skill to bypass the borders to ensure the world's safety and balance,” I reminded him, my tone matter-of-fact.
His expression faltered for a moment, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his features. “That may be true, but this hardly qualifies as an emergency,” he argued, his tone defensive.
I cocked my head to the side, a smirk playing at the corners of my lips. “Oh, I don't know about that,” I replied, my voice dripping with sarcasm. “I'd say preventing the illegal mechanical dragon wings' production and thwarting a potential threat to the entire realm qualifies as an emergency in my book.”
Viperax's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he regarded me with thinly veiled contempt. “You always find a way to justify your actions, don't you?” he muttered, his tone begrudging.
I shrugged nonchalantly, unfazed by his accusation. “What can I say? I'm just doing my duty as the dragon king,” I replied. “Disturbing the wyverns is a crime and it compromises the safety of the world. Imagine if they went on a rampage at the same time? Or what about their population if their eggs continue to be stolen?” I countered, my voice firm. "I didn't break the law at all," I reminded him, my tone unwavering.
“That's bullshit!” he exclaimed, his annoyance evident in his voice.
At his statement, I rested my elbows on the table, my gaze unwavering as I locked eyes with him. "Just a question, Viperax, are you sure you want to discuss that matter again?" I asked in a cold voice, my tone heavy with seriousness.
Viperax's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing. “I won't let you twist the truth to suit your agenda,” he declared, his voice tinged with defiance.
I shook my head, a wry smile playing at the corners of my lips. “I'm not twisting anything,” I countered, my voice calm but resolute. “I'm simply upholding the law and ensuring the realm's safety.”
He scoffed, his expression hardening as he leaned forward, his eyes blazing with anger. “You're a hypocrite, Argod,” he spat, his voice dripping with contempt.
I raised an eyebrow, my gaze unwavering as I met his glare with a steely resolve. “I'm simply doing what needs to be done,” I replied evenly, my tone unyielding.
Viperax fell silent, his lips pressed into a thin line as he glared at me.
