Chapter 228: Championship Matchday 14: Cardiff City vs Bradford City

Championship Matchday 14

Cardiff City vs Bradford City

Saturday, 1 November – 15:00 KO

The wind bit harder the closer they got to the tunnel mouth. Cardiff's steel-and-blue stadium loomed like a modern fortress, and Jake stood beneath it, expression unreadable beneath the hood of his coat. The rain hadn't started—but the threat of it hovered thick in the sky.

Around him, the players bounced in place, eyes shifting toward the crowd, the pitch, each other. The rotated eleven. Hungry. Young. Lightly scarred.

"Don't play like winners…" Jake's voice had echoed last night, inside the dim hotel conference room, "play like you need to win something."

Rin Itoshi, barely eighteen and already carrying electricity in his stride. Obi, teeth clenched, eyes alert, waiting to erupt. Rasmussen, quiet but coiled. The back line, young and eager, with Cox behind them—barely old enough to drink, but today, their last line.

Jake exhaled slowly.

Momentum didn't belong to you. It wasn't owned. It was hunted, earned, and lost in a heartbeat.

[LIVE – Sky Sports EFL]

Daniel Mann: "It's a bold lineup from Jake Wilson. Eleven changes from midweek, but this is no second string—it's a statement. Cardiff, beware."

Michael Johnson: "Watch Obi today. The kid's raw but fearless. And Rin—give him half a lane, and he glides."

Kickoff – 1st Minute

Cardiff pressed with a veteran's arrogance. Straight lines. Compact shape. Bradford's 4–2–4 flexed as expected, with Chapman anchoring midfield and Lowe organizing, trying to catch patterns before they formed.

Kang and Bianchi were tested immediately—balls lofted high into the swirling Welsh wind. Etete didn't bother with subtlety. He battered.

Richards barked early. "Hold shape!" Holloway answered with a thundering clearance that skidded off the wet turf into the third row.

Jake didn't blink.

They expected chaos. They were built for it.

8th Minute

Throw-in, Cardiff. Etete dragged both center-backs toward the near post. The ball thundered in, off Ralls' chest, bounced—twice—and Holloway flung his body across the six-yard box to toe-poke it away.

A warning.

System pinged.

[Alert: High-risk overloads – adjust Holloway's positioning tighter to post.]

Jake tapped the signal in silence.

12th Minute

Obi turned his marker with a roll that left the Cardiff centre-back stumbling over his own boots. The crowd gasped. Obi burst forward, touched it inside, and let fly—

Just wide.

Jake allowed himself the faintest nod.

Momentum nudged.

17th Minute

Another throw. This one deeper.

Etete rose. The header smashed the post. Ralls nearly bundled the rebound in before Kang cleared with a rugby-style lunge.

Jake's jaw tightened. His eyes didn't.

Let Cardiff swing. Burn their fuse early.

29th Minute

Finally, the moment.

Walsh picked up a second ball and immediately threaded a pass wide to Rasmussen, who surged forward into space like a man on rails.

One touch to steady.

One look up.

The cross curved, kissed the six-yard box—Rin ducked his head just enough for the ball to skip past his ear—

And Obi arrived.

Volley. Left foot. Clean.

GOAL.

0–1.

[LIVE – Sky Sports]

Daniel Mann: "Oh what a finish! Obi lashes it in—and Bradford's young guns strike first!"

Michael Johnson: "Rasmussen's delivery was wicked. But Rin's dummy? That's intelligence you can't teach."

Jake barely reacted.

Just muttered, "Stay narrow," and called Paul over to adjust Chapman's shadow position.

43rd Minute

Lowe won a scrap in midfield like a bar fight—shoulder, elbow, toe, and then the release.

Rin sprinted.

Split the lines.

One-on-one.

Keeper rushed.

Shot—saved.

A boot denied him. A damn good one.

Jake gritted his teeth.

45+2nd Minute

Final minute of the half.

Ralls ghosted into space at the top of the box. One touch. Strike.

It curled.

Cox flew.

Left hand stretched—and clawed it wide.

Gasps across the stadium.

The kid had claws.

Halftime – Tunnel

Jake spoke once.

"Still think momentum belongs to you?"

Silence answered.

They knew better now.

Second Half – 46th Minute

Chapman and Lowe tucked deeper. Bradford's shape narrowed. Cardiff kept launching. The game turned into gravel.

No elegance. Just scars.

52nd Minute

Ball ricocheted off two players in the box. Chapman reacted first—smashed it on the half-volley.

It cannoned off the bar.

The rebound fell to Rin, but the angle was too tight. Side netting.

Bradford started to believe.

Jake started planning.

61st Minute – Substitution

Vélez on for Chapman.

Richter on for Obi.

Fresh legs. More pressing fire. Less target play.

Jake turned to Paul.

"They're about to open space. Let's punch through it."

Paul just nodded.

68th Minute – GOAL

Itoshi. Magic feet.

Slid inside two defenders like he wasn't even there.

He waited.

Timed it perfectly.

Threaded a razor pass across the box.

Richter ran onto it, low and cool.

The net rippled.

0–2.

[LIVE – Sky Sports]

Daniel Mann: "Rin Itoshi. That's not a pass—that's a scalpel!"

Michael Johnson: "Richter didn't blink. Two-nil. Game management now."

Jake didn't smile.

He turned to his system.

[Match Control: 71%]

[Opposition Fatigue: High – Central Midfield]

He toggled a switch. Vélez dropped into a back-three shell in possession. Chapman's job? Gone. Lowe's job? Cover. Simple math.

77th Minute

Bianchi saved the day.

A last-ditch stretch. Full extension. Ball cleared off the toes of Etete.

Jake shouted, "Drop five yards!"

The bench yelled in echo.

84th Minute

Walsh, patient all game, finally found the moment.

One touch. Another. Cut inside. Curled shot.

Over by inches.

The fans behind the goal groaned.

Jake turned to Paul. "He'll score next week."

Paul smirked.

90+3rd Minute – Full-Time

Final Cardiff cross.

Final header—looped. Easy.

Cox caught it midair like a keeper twice his age.

Then the whistle.

Jake turned his back on the pitch before the cheers hit.

[Post-Match – Sky Sports]

Daniel Mann: "That's three straight clean sheets, two rotated squads, and Jake Wilson is building something at Bradford."

Michael Johnson: "Momentum's not assumed, it's earned—and right now, Bradford are doing both."

Fan Forum – BCFC Online

@BantamsBlood: "This isn't luck. This is system football. Jakeball is REAL."

@ItoshiUltra: "Rin's pass… I need that on a t-shirt."

@RichterFanpage: "SIGN HIM PERMANENTLY. I'm screaming."

Jake stood beneath the floodlights.

The wind had picked up again, colder now. Valley Parade was far away, but the road there felt shorter than ever.

They'd earned this one.

But Strasbourg waited.

And the next test was coming.
