Chapter 224 – World Event Boss Fight
He didn’t even turn a hair at my last-minute request. “Certainly.”
He picked me up again and flew me down to the ground where I took out a tent from my inventory and changed into new clothes.
“You don’t mind if I change into something more flashy, do you?” I asked him from inside the tent.
“Why would I mind?”
I laughed and browsed the System’s Cash Shop for something suitably glamorous to wear. The Combat Screen had two new buttons, no doubt exclusive to this World Event, [Hide Players] and [Take Screenshot].
Maybe it was vain of me, but I really wanted a screenshot of me hitting enormous numbers on the Demon Boss!
I found the perfect cosmetic overrides after a few minutes, the [Draconic Crafted Robe Set] for my costume, the [Nine Dragons Soaring] special effect for the spell, and the fan-favorite [Pop Retro Comic Splash] combat visual.
The [Draconic Crafted Robe Set] was a floor-length sleeveless blue, violet, and grey robe with a dragon scale pattern and silver accents. Its most eye-catching feature was the huge standing fantasy Elizabethan-style ruff that framed my face in the front and rose above my head at the back. My arms were covered by long white gloves that almost reached my shoulder. The costume set also included a bunch of sapphire, amethyst, jade, and pearl accessories, which meant that I was dripping in jewelry from head to toe, including a huge crown, necklaces, brooches, belts, bracelets, and jeweled shoulder pads. In contrast, the magic staff was a simple length of plain white wood topped by a shimmering dragon scale-shaped blue crystal floating above the tip.
[Nine Dragons Soaring] would, as the name suggested, make dragons appear when I cast a spell, while [Pop Retro Comic Splash] would show a large comic bubble with the number I hit written in it in large text.
After using the [Butterfly Bear Dreamweaver] Cash Shop item on Mr. Bear, I exited the tent in high spirits. “I’m ready!”
Prince Baiyu chuckled and took my hand, which he lifted over my head and twirled my body around. My skirt billowed charmingly, and we smiled at each other.
“You look lovely,” he said.
“Thanks, dear.” I went on tiptoe and kissed his cheek.
The others, who were still on the back of the tortoise, whooped and yelled jokes down at us. Prince Baiyu flew me back and I put the staff away and readied my [Phosphorescent Floral Fury Bow].
“We’ll join the battle when I see the signal,” said Lady Lanying.
“What are we waiting for?” I whispered to Prince Baiyu.
“More people will be deployed to the front of the monster to make sure it doesn’t turn around.” He pointed at the middle of the demon’s back. “That’s where we’ll fly to. Two other Black Tortoise teams are already in place on the left and right sides to provide support for us.”
“Cool.”
They obviously had everything well in hand. I braced myself by holding on to the railing with one hand as the Black Tortoise rose to the skies when we got the signal, a set of fireworks that exploded into bright red and green flowers.
“Now?” I asked Lady Lanying.
She nodded and I raised my bow and drew back the drawstring. I realized that the railing wouldn’t really help stabilize me since I needed to use both hands to shoot. Prince Baiyu put an arm around my waist when he saw that I was wobbling a little.
The first flower arrows I shot fell wide of the mark, but it allowed the clan members to estimate the correct distance for our position. We flew closer and this time, I hit the target, which wasn’t hard since it was literally as big as a mountain. Up close, the demon’s skin looked like unfired clay, which was great since it didn’t bleed.
How horrible it would have been to see a large monster with huge gaping wounds dripping blood everywhere!
I took a deep breath and struck it again with a cute arrow. The [Pop Retro Comic Splash] made a large comic splash with the number zero in the middle appear where I had hit it.
“That’s one.” I continued shooting it as fast as I could. “Two. Three.”
I counted off the hits to make sure I didn’t miss the all-important hundredth attack. I thought that the others would think my actions were funny, but, to my surprise, everyone was taking it very seriously. Prince Baiyu kept his arm around me and held aloft a jade pagoda in his other hand. This was one of the White Tiger clan’s greatest treasures and could block all but the strongest of attacks both physical and magical. Likewise, the Black Tortoise clan members were all looking outward in all directions wielding their [Diamond Scepter and Thunderbolt Bells] in our defense. Prince Vikarna had also silently pulled out his [War Fan].
“...Ninety-eight. Ninety-Nine.” I put away my toy bow and arrows and equipped the [Sylvanite Staff] magic staff with the [Draconic Crafted Staff] override.
[Sylvanite] was a mythical metal alloy in Adventure Incarnate that was supposedly made of steel and enchanted platinum. Scholar Wu said she had never seen its like before. The metal was a lovely leaf green color, but the staff was quite plain. Therefore, for the sake of a good screenshot, I still preferred the weapon from the fancy-looking [Draconic Crafted Robe Set].
Then I made Mr. Bear grow until he was three feet tall and set him to cast a [Fireball]. Whatever my puppet hit would be added to my total.
“Okay, the next one is the real one!” I smiled and unleashed the full force of [Magic Claw] on the unlucky demon. I could hardly wait to see what effect [Mercy Mode] would have on my spell.
[Magic Claw:
Unleash the energy of a Spell Stone to conjure three destructive beams that shoot forth from your weapon, tearing at enemies like claws.
Cooldown: 5 seconds]
[Nine Dragons Soaring] was truly worth it. Amidst a shower of golden sparks, nine illusory dragons with iridescent azure scales, long white whiskers, and vast, gem-like blue eyes. They were accompanied by fluffy white clouds and were all chasing a flaming pearl up into the sky. The illusion disappeared, and then the spell struck the demon.
“Yes!” I struck a victory pose with my magic staff extended towards the demon and took the screenshot as the [Pop Retro Comic Splash] showed the number 21,000.
Wow! Twenty-one thousand was huge. The maximum hit in Adventure Incarnate was eighty-four thousand at level 99 Magic, with maximum hits doubling every ten levels. At level 12 Magic, a player could only expect to do 100-200 damage.
I had just done a thousand times what I could normally do!
“What-”
Prince Baiyu’s surprised exclamation was cut off by a loud explosion. I was expecting [Magic Claw] to leave six long scratches on the demon. Instead, my spell exploded in a ball of fire and blew a hole clean through its torso right under its left shoulder. I took more screenshots while Lady Yanying and the others cheered. The demon didn’t even seem to notice.
I lowered my staff and looked around. “That was a lot better than what I thought I could do.”
“Well done!” Lady Yanying patted Prince Baiyu’s back and gave him an arch look. “I can see why she’s popular.”
I laughed and struck another victory pose by waving my staff around. “Fear me! I am a powerful magician!”
“That was beyond even my expectations.” Prince Vikarna, who had been gazing at the demon with a thoughtful expression on his face, turned towards me, his eyes glowing. “Did you know? Vermillion eyes have the innate ability to tell truth from lies, reality from illusion.”
Why was he telling me that? Yes, I already knew some people from the Vermillion Bird clan had this type of eye powers. That was why I didn't need to monitor the Boss's HP myself to know when it was about to use its special AOE abilities. I gave him a puzzled look. “That’s nice.”
He smiled.
Since he didn’t say anything else after that, I mentally took a few more screenshots of the battle.
“Another?” Lady Yanying asked me.
“Oh no, that was quite enough.” It was nice of her to offer, but I didn’t want to take up everyone’s time. I made Mr. Bear shrink to palm size and put him in a pocket. “I’ll return to camp.”
They flew me back and returned to the battlefield. Prince Baiyu stayed behind for a few minutes to talk to me.
“I’ll visit you as soon as I can,” he whispered in my ear as we hugged goodbye.
My cheek rested against the soft fabric of his silk robe as I leaned into him. The steady beat of his heart was a comforting rhythm against my own. “Take care of yourself, okay?”
“I’ll be careful,” he promised.
A playful pinch of his waist was my response. “Great. Don’t forget, you still have to reward me for rejecting two marriage proposals for you.”
“I haven’t forgotten.” He pinched me back and laughed when I squealed in surprise.
“See you soon!” I waved as he flew away.
At the camp, my household welcomed me with cool peach juice, hot steamed pork buns, and ecstatic congratulations.
“Your fire spell burned straight through it!”
“A magnificent display of power!”
“Incredible!”
“That was awesome!”
“Thank you. Thank you! It’s time to go. Let’s return to the farm.” Our stuff was already packed, so I simply used the System to take down our tent.
Scholar Wu shook her head at me. “I should’ve known you were being modest when you said you would only scratch it a little.”
Mo and Kharli walked beside me as we returned to the ship.
Kharli tried to touch my robes. “Teacher, these robes are gorgeous!”
“You look like a queen.” Mo craned her neck to peer at my towering golden crown.
Suddenly, I realized one of my apprentices was missing. “Where’s Lari?”
What do you think?
