The stadium was open-air, and on such a chilly winter night, it was still incredibly warm with fans steadily streaming in. The stage was in the middle, surrounded by tiered stands that rose higher and higher. Looking from Zhou Xufang’s point of view, there was a sea of green in all directions.
After being inside for over twenty minutes, it got rather hot and she took off her scarf. Jiang Zhi held it for her.
As the opening music began, a wave of screams followed. The lights all converged on one spot, and the lift slowly rose with a slender, delicate-looking young man with a guitar on his back appearing. He was dressed in a clean, white suit, his eyes frosty, carrying a touch of coolness. He was not one to smile much, pale and fragile.
Fans screamed hysterically, from chaotic to uniform.
“Xiao Yusheng!”
“Xiao Yusheng!”
“Xiao Yusheng!”
“…”
Echo after echo, precise and uniform.
Xiao Yusheng walked to the center stage, his band behind him. He adjusted the mic, and his clear voice came through, “I am Xiao Yusheng.”
The nineteen-year-old brimmed with vitality, but there was a frostiness in his eyes, a detached look. Standing under the stage lights, the light fell on his overly pale face, giving off a sickly appearance, stunningly beautiful in an unthreatening way. He appeared like jade: exquisite but fragile.
The fans below erupted, standing up to shout and scream.
“Ah ah ah ah—”
“Ah ah ah ah—”
Xiao Yusheng hadn’t been in the industry for long and, being a singer, he had not acted in any films or TV shows, nor had he appeared in many commercials. His fan count might not rival many popular idols, but the frenzy was unmatched in the entertainment industry.
Since his appearance, the screams had never stopped.
Apart from the central stage, the surrounding lights had been dimmed, and Jiang Zhi couldn’t see Zhou Xufang’s face clearly. The two butterfly-knotted horns on her head flickered a green glow.
Jiang Zhi leaned in and asked by her ear, “Does your ear feel uncomfortable?” His concern stemmed from the fact that she had highly sensitive hearing, worrying that the noise inside might upset her.
Zhou Xufang shook her head, her eyes shining, “It’s not uncomfortable.”
On stage, Xiao Yusheng had already started to sing, a slow, slightly pastoral song that was comforting to hear. The fans quieted down on their own, waving glow sticks in their hands, fluttering like a sky filled with green stars.
Zhou Xufang watched intently, her eyes curved as if she was smiling, “Jiang Zhi, it’s so lively, so lively.” She was overjoyed.
Seeing her joy, Jiang Zhi’s mood lifted too, patting the horns on her headband, “Do you like it this lively?”
Zhou Xufang nodded enthusiastically, “I like it.”
She was used to being alone, always hiding, not knowing that amidst the din and clamor, such unrestrained revelry was possible, not knowing that laughter and chaos could be part of the merry-making as well.
“As long as you like it.” Jiang Zhi wasn’t particularly interested in concerts, so he just watched her, watched her head bobbing, her eyes blinking, her hands randomly waving the glow stick.
The previous Zhou Xufang never used to be like this. Always solitary, never crying or smiling, with dark, tightly closed lips, she would shrink in the corner, not speaking to or making eye contact with anyone.
It’s better now, her smile is beautiful.
Zhou Xufang tilted her head to look at him, “Do you find it noisy?”
It was noisy.
Jiang Zhi shook his head, “Not noisy. Shout if you want to, just don’t hurt your throat.”
During the interlude, Fang Lixiang beside them started howling.
Zhou Xufang felt too embarrassed to shout, so she just waved her light stick energetically, whispering the name of Xiao Yusheng along with the rhythm of the fans beside her.
Xiao Yusheng sang three songs in a row. He spoke very little, and it was evident that he was quiet by nature, not fond of interacting. Aside from a few transitional words to announce the song titles, his interaction with the fans was almost nonexistent.
He had a pair of eyes more delicate than a girl’s, slight double eyelids, and when he looked at people, his gaze was filled with bright stars, very radiant, yet with a hint of lonely desolation.
“I don’t know if you have come.”
He spoke with the same tone as when he sang, slow-paced, like telling a story: “This song is written for you.” He stood at the center of the stage, guitar on his back, and softly announced the song title, “I Miss You.”
As soon as the prelude started, the fans began to scream.
“Ah ah ah ah—”
“Ah ah ah ah—”
Voices surrounded them; no one could hear anyone else. Fang Lixiang also screamed, her eyes turning red as she shouted, “Xue Baoyi! Xue Baoyi! Xue Baoyi!”
In a fit of anger, she yelled, “Bastard! Bastard! Stinking bastard!”
Others might not have heard, but Zhou Xufang did. She turned to see Fang Lixiang crying, her eyes red: “Lixiang, what happened?”
Fang Lixiang wiped her eyes and lied, “I’m just too happy to see Yun Sheng.” Sniffling and with a sob in her voice, she said, “So happy I started crying.”
After hastily wiping the tears from her face, she continued to scream, pretending nothing was amiss as the festivities carried on.
The song was very sorrowful. As it neared the end, it quieted down, one that should not be listened to attentively, as it would leave a heartache. Many fans already had teary eyes.
Cool snowflakes fell on her head. Zhou Xufang looked up and caught them with her hand.
“Jiang Zhi,” she said, “it’s snowing.”
Xiao Xue was drifting down, slowly and gently, refracting off the green stage lights, like fireflies flickering with light.
The weather forecast was accurate, predicting light snow at night. The concertgoers had all brought raincoats, including Fang Lixiang. She took one out from her canvas bag and handed it to Zhou Xufang.
Jiang Zhi took it, helped Zhou Xufang into it, and placed the hood on her head. The raincoat was transparent, and the headband and hair clips on Zhou Xufang’s head sparkled. Wearing the oversized raincoat hood and illuminated by the greenish light, she resembled a Little Witch.
Jiang Zhi asked his Little Witch, “Are you cold?”
“Not cold.”
He grabbed her hand—it was ice-cold—so he took out a thermos from her backpack and poured her a cup to drink.
Zhou Xufang removed her mask and took a sip, frowning slightly, “You put in goji berries.” She found the taste of goji berries strange and unpalatable.
“Goji berries are for health.”
“…” Her boyfriend had changed; he was becoming more and more like an old-fashioned man.
“Drink a few more sips.”
“Oh,” Zhou Xufang finished the water in the cup lid.
Jiang Zhi put away the thermos, “Put your mask back on.”
Surrounded by people, Zhou Xufang felt hot and sweaty, especially after drinking hot water. Her face also felt a bit feverish, “I won’t wear it, I’m hot.” She shook the light stick in her hand and hummed softly along to the tune.
Jiang Zhi wasn’t paying attention to the concert; he was searching for the profile of the girl beside him in the lights.
With snowflakes fluttering all around, Xiao Yusheng sang quietly. His long eyelashes drooped, catching a white snowflake on them. As he lifted his lashes, the snowflake melted into his eye, the clear light resembling dew condensed with frost, and he suddenly stilled.
After the interlude, the music should have climaxed, but at this moment, it abruptly came to a halt.
What do you think?
