The Bigshot's Superstar Wife

Chapter 177 177: Laboratory Rats

Throughout history, war has driven mankind to push the boundaries of human experimentation.

Conventional weapons were not enough, the thirst for power demanded something more. Something unstoppable.

Something that could erase entire armies without the need for bullets or bombs. The result? The Lab Rats.

Not actual rodents, but living, breathing biological weapons, human experiments created to be the perfect killers.

They were not born but engineered. Their bodies were enhanced, and their minds sharpened into something beyond human comprehension.

Pain was nothing to them. They could adapt to any battlefield, regenerate from wounds that would kill an ordinary soldier, and strike with terrifying precision.

The project had started in secret, hidden deep within underground labs funded by various organizations. Some of these backers were military factions.

Others were corporations eager to profit from war. But one of the most infamous investors in the project was an elusive group, the Assassin's Guild.

A shadowy organization that operated from the dark, influencing wars and governments from behind the scenes.

Athena did not remember, but once upon a time, the Assassin's Guild had poured immense resources into these experiments.

Their goal was not just to create warriors, but to create the ultimate assassins, beings who could slip into enemy territory undetected, eliminate targets, and disappear without a trace.

The Lab Rats were not meant to be mindless beasts like the ordinary infected. They were designed to think, to plan, to outmaneuver their enemies.

But something had gone terribly wrong. The enhancements had exceeded expectations, and the test subjects had become something else entirely.

No longer human, yet not fully monster either. They were the in-between, a terrifying hybrid of intelligence and insatiable hunger. And the one Athena had just fought… was one of them.

She did not remember this. She did not remember anything. All she knew was that something inside her recoiled at the familiarity of that creature. It had spoken to her, recognized her.

And something deep in her gut told her that this was not just a random encounter. This was personal. Xavier did not say much after the fight.

He simply moved quickly, leading them away from the abandoned building and deeper into the city's ruins. Athena followed in silence, but her mind was restless.

She needed answers. Who was she before she lost her memories?

What kind of life had she lived to be able to fight like this, to instinctively match Xavier's movements, to survive against creatures that should have been impossible to kill?

And why did that creature act like it knew her? They moved swiftly, avoiding the hordes of zombies that roamed the streets.

Occasionally, they would come across the remnants of what had once been civilization, a half-collapsed mall, a row of burnt-out cars, and a street lined with abandoned homes.

Each place held echoes of the past, of the lives that had been lost when the world fell apart.

After hours of walking, they found an old underground bunker beneath what used to be a military outpost. Xavier pried open the rusted metal doors, and they slipped inside.

The air was thick with dust, but it was safe. The bunker had enough supplies to last them a while, and more importantly, it was secure.

As soon as they settled in, Athena finally broke the silence.

"That thing," she said, turning to Xavier. "The one we fought. It spoke to me."

Xavier's expression remained unreadable. "I know."

"You don't seem surprised."

"I'm not."

Athena frowned. "Why?"

Xavier exhaled slowly, leaning against the cold metal wall. "Because I've seen things like that before."

Athena narrowed her eyes. "You have?"

His gaze darkened. "Yes. And so have you."

Her heart pounded. "I don't remember."

"I know."

"Then tell me."

Xavier was silent for a moment. Then, he stepped closer, lowering his voice.

"The infected we've been fighting? They're nothing compared to what's coming. The one you fought today, was a Lab Rat."

Athena's breath hitched. "A what?"

"Lab Rats. Human experiments. They were created to be weapons. Faster, smarter, stronger than anything else on the battlefield."

His voice was steady, but there was an edge to it. "They weren't supposed to be part of the infection. They were supposed to be controlled."

Athena felt a chill crawl up her spine. "Then why..."

"Because they can't be controlled." Xavier's jaw tightened. "And now they're loose."

She processed his words carefully. "How do you know all this?"

Xavier looked at her, his gaze piercing. "Because I've been hunting them."

Athena's stomach twisted. "Why?"

"Because if we don't kill them first, they'll kill us."

Silence filled the bunker. Athena's mind spun with questions, but she forced herself to focus.

"Do you think… I was one of them?" she asked hesitantly.

Xavier's expression did not change. "No."

She blinked. "How can you be sure?"

He held her gaze, unwavering. "Because you were never a Lab Rat. But you were involved."

Athena's hands clenched into fists. "Involved how?"

Xavier hesitated, as if choosing his next words carefully. "I don't know everything, but I know this, you were connected to the people who made them."

Her breath caught in her throat. "That doesn't make sense."

Xavier sighed. "No, it doesn't. But it's the truth."

Athena felt a wave of frustration. Every answer led to more questions, and the pieces of the puzzle refused to fit. But one thing was clear, she could not afford to ignore this.

If the Lab Rats were out there, if they were hunting her, then she needed to find out why. And the only way to do that… Was to remember.

Athena stared at Xavier, her mind tangled with thoughts she couldn't piece together. The idea that she was involved in something as horrifying as the Lab Rats sent a chill through her.

Yet, no matter how hard she tried, there were no memories, no fragments to grasp onto. "I need to know the truth," she finally said.

Xavier studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Then we start searching. But be prepared, some truths are better left forgotten."

Athena exhaled slowly. "I don't care. I need to remember."

Because whatever was coming… she had a feeling it was far worse than anything she had faced before.
