Chapter 76 76: Manipulation
That night, Azrael meditated once more on the Hymn to the Divine Immortal Soul.
His Divine essence rotated within his core, slamming against the walls in its desperation to destroy it.
The core wobbled and shook, but held true.
Azrael allowed his mind to wander while moving his Essence, and he found himself reflecting upon what he had done earlier in the day.
He had been lucky enough to discover Harold Sabastine, but the chances of the two men being the same person were not a hundred percent.
Azrael decided that he needed a backup plan in case things didn't go the way he wanted.
He was going to kill Harold Sabastine, but if the God aspect he received from him was not the one that he wanted, then he would need to find some other way to get what he wanted.
As Azrael subconsciously went through these things, he felt his core tremble, and some Essence broke out from the shell, leaking into a basin below and starting to form a new shell.
Azrael inevitably found his mind gravitating towards Maddison once more.
What Azrael did to her today was wrong.
Azrael knew deep in his heart that he had played on the emotions that Maddison felt for him in order to make her agree to help him.
Azrael was not a fool, and he understood human emotion better than most people.
Just from the looks Maddison gave him, he could tell that she really liked him.
Azrael didn't know if it was because she was starved for attention or if she genuinely felt something for him, but just the fact that the spark was present in her heart was good enough.
Today, Azrael had used that emotion to his advantage, both to make Maddison help him and to make her fall deeper into the same hell that he had fallen into already.
There was a fire lit in Maddison's heart now, and only time would tell if she was going to allow it to consume her or not.
What he did was necessary.
The larger part of Azrael's conscience that believed this pushed down the smaller half that raved against his actions.
Azrael couldn't afford to waste time on emotional juggling.
If he didn't get into that party, Azrael didn't know how much longer he would have to wait before he got another chance like this.
Even though Azrael played on Maddison's emotions, he didn't do it halfheartedly.
He was more than prepared for whatever repercussions arose from his actions, and he would deal with it in due time.
Azrael took in a silent breath and sighed to calm himself.
The question of what sort of person he was sprung up in Azrael's mind again as he read through the Hymn to the Divine Immortal Soul. The Essence in his core raged more intensely, and his body seemed to melt into the floor with how calm he was.
This time, there were no doubts present in his heart.
His frenzied thoughts went quiet all at once as the warring parts of his conscience accepted his proclamation.
He was the furious swordsman who cried out for power.
He was the fool who discarded his humanity.
He was the cursed reaper of the death god.
… The desperate survivor.

The next day, Azrael sat in class and half-heartedly listened to the geography teacher tell them about the Demigod War and how it led to the creation of the Sunken Valley thirty years ago.
The war was common knowledge among the demigods.
It was a battle that raged for more than five years between the children of darkness and the children of light. The children of darkness had been led by a child of Loki, and the children of light were led by a child of Zeus.
That was the war that led a lot of demigods to start despising the demigods blessed by the Gods of darkness.
The only reason why the children of darkness were not treated like criminals today was because there was no set pattern for a god to choose a demigod to give their blessing.
A child of light could have a child, and that child would end up being blessed by a god of darkness.
No one knew what could happen, so the children of darkness were allowed to mingle with the other demigods even today.
But that didn't mean they were liked by everyone.
Although some people tolerated the children of darkness, many of those in the older generation didn't even want to be in the same room as them.
... The thought of how he was going to approach Sunny about the party was still running through Azrael's mind.
Azrael had already told Sunny once that he wasn't interested in the party at all, so it was going to be a bit difficult for him to suddenly change his mind like this without seeming suspicious.
But Azrael didn't have a choice.
He was not going to be let in if he didn't get an invite.
Azrael needed to somehow get Sunny to agree between now and tomorrow. The party was going to be held on Friday, so there wasn't that much time.
Azrael needed to complete the next mission before the weekend.
This weekend, they were going to be in school for the bi-weekly training exercise. If Azrael doesn't finish this mission before then, he is only going to have two more days before he dies to the curse.
It was too small of a window, and Azrael did not want to make a mistake by rushing things, so he needed to get it done before the weekend.
Sunny was hardheaded, but Azrael was sure that once he mentioned Maddison would be coming as well, the playboy would reconsider. Someone like Sunny, who only thinks with their nethers, was easy to convince like this.
Azrael just had to use this as his bargaining chip to get into the mansion, and once he got in, then Maddison would be free to do whatever she wanted.
Maddison might not want to stay for the party after all, and Azrael wouldn't care if she left immediately after they arrived.
He didn't need her past the entrance anyway.
"Azrael, can you answer the question on the screen?"
The teacher suddenly spoke up, and Azrael looked up to see that it was a question about what year the Sunken Valley on the western side of the mortal plane was created during the Demigod War.
"2027."
Azrael said calmly, and the teacher frowned a little before nodding.
"That's correct. Try to keep your attention in class, understand?"
Azrael nodded back as the teacher continued to explain more about the Sunken Valley, and once the teacher was no longer paying attention to him, Azrael turned away and delved back into his thoughts.
Azrael could ask Maddison to talk to Sunny for him.
Sunny was attracted to Maddison, so Azrael could use that to his advantage and make her convince Sunny to let them come.
No, that wasn't something Azrael wanted to do.
Azrael had already pushed Maddison far by asking her to come to the party with him.
If he tried to push any further, there was a chance that she was going to refuse to go at all.
What do you think?
