Chapter 21: The Two of Them Blew up the Kitchen
“Crack!”
Yue Lingshan pushed open the kitchen door and looked inside, only to freeze the next moment.
“That’s strange. I swear I just heard something…”
Yue Lingshan stepped into the kitchen, sweeping her gaze around. Aside from the kitchenware, there wasn’t a soul in sight. Her delicate brows furrowed as she scratched her head.
“Could it have been a rat?”
She was full of doubt. The candle was clearly still burning, yet there wasn’t a single person around.
At this moment, Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze were hiding inside a rice vat in the corner.
It was pitch dark inside. The large vat was just barely spacious enough to hold the two of them, but it was a tight squeeze.
In the cramped space, Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze crouched face-to-face, their cheeks only inches apart, practically touching. Neither dared to breathe too loudly.
Even so, they could still feel each other’s faint breath.
A wave of masculine energy surged toward her. Ning Zhongze felt her face heat up, a blush blooming across her cheeks—though in the darkness, Linghu Chong couldn’t see it.
If he could see it, who knew what he might do…
But it wasn’t just Ning Zhongze—Linghu Chong was also suffering. That faint orchid-like fragrance and the sensation of closeness constantly tested his limits.
In the dark, Ning Zhongze’s brow twitched ever so slightly. Only now did it hit her: why were they hiding like this?
It wasn’t like they were having a secret rendezvous.
Was it not perfectly reasonable for a disciple and his master’s wife to be in the kitchen late at night?
Wasn’t it completely normal for a master’s wife to care whether her disciple had eaten well?
Then why were they nervous and afraid—why did they feel the need to hide?
Ning Zhongze was filled with regret. She shouldn’t have let Linghu Chong hide like that earlier. That situation could have been explained.
But now, there was absolutely no way they could just come out. If Yue Lingshan discovered them, there would be no explaining it.
With that thought, Ning Zhongze became furious, placing all the blame squarely on Linghu Chong.
She reached out and felt around his waist.
Linghu Chong felt her warm, delicate hand touch his waist. His body instantly tensed, eyes widening in the dark as he stared at the outline of her face with disbelief.
Was she actually making a move?!
But the next moment, he realized he was dead wrong.
Ning Zhongze gave his waist a full 360-degree twist.
“Hiss…”
Linghu Chong sucked in a cold breath from the pain, letting out a faint sound.
Startled, Ning Zhongze instantly clapped a hand over his mouth.
However, the sound had already caught Yue Lingshan’s attention.
“What was that?” Yue Lingshan abruptly turned, her eyes locking onto the rice vat in the corner.
Inside the vat, Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze were utterly terrified. Their bodies frozen in place, hearts lodged in their throats. They could hear Yue Lingshan’s footsteps slowly approaching.
The two curled up in the confined space, not daring to make a sound. Cold sweat beaded on their foreheads, and their hearts pounded like drums in their chests.
At that moment, it was as if they could hear each other’s nervous heartbeat.
Yue Lingshan’s footsteps drew nearer and nearer.
Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze’s minds raced, trying to think of a way out of the situation.
As if perfectly in sync, their eyes met in the darkness, conveying the same thought.
If Yue Lingshan really came over and opened the vat, they would leap out at once, knock her unconscious, and make their escape.
With their level of martial skill and movement technique, there was a good chance they could keep their identities hidden.
They nodded to each other, circulating their internal energy throughout their bodies in preparation.
Yue Lingshan was now only two or three steps away from the vat.
Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze were poised to strike like lightning.
One last step—
Just then, a ‘squeak squeak squeak’ sounded as a rat darted out from behind the vat, scurrying toward Yue Lingshan’s feet.
“Ah! A rat!”
Yue Lingshan shrieked, jumping backward in fright.
The rat, equally startled by her scream, quickly fled into a hole in the ground.
Yue Lingshan stared as it disappeared, and only after it vanished completely did she breathe a sigh of relief.
“So it was a rat! Scared me half to death!”
She patted her generously sized chest, still shaken.
Now, she didn’t dare take another step toward the rice vat.
Inside the vat, Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze also let out a small breath of relief.
“Forget it. I’d better go find Mother.”
Yue Lingshan muttered. After blowing out the kitchen candle, she walked out and shut the door behind her.
“Clang!” The kitchen door shut tight.
“Huuuuh!!!”
Once she was far enough away, Linghu Chong and Ning Zhongze exhaled deeply. They were incredibly lucky to have avoided discovery.
That warm, orchid-like breath entered Linghu Chong’s mouth.
It made his heart race, and his supreme cultivation technique had already begun to operate involuntarily.
Moved by impulse, Linghu Chong suddenly leaned forward and sealed Ning Zhongze’s lips with his own in the darkness.
Ning Zhongze’s body trembled, eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at Linghu Chong, mind blank, momentarily forgetting to resist.
How could he dare?!
A wave of burning shame and anger surged in her chest. Ning Zhongze raised her hand and struck Linghu Chong with a palm brimming with elite-level internal energy.
“BOOM!!!”
A deafening sound.
The rice vat exploded, and Linghu Chong’s body was flung through the air, crashing hard into the firewood pile beside the stove.
“What was that sound?”
The explosion startled all of Mount Hua.
Yue Lingshan, who hadn’t gone far, suddenly turned back toward the kitchen.
“Did the kitchen explode?” she muttered.
She spun around and ran back toward the kitchen.
“Chong’er, that was way over the line!”
Ning Zhongze’s face flushed deep red as she glared furiously at Linghu Chong, who lay sprawled in the firewood. With a huff, she stormed out, slamming the door.
This place was no longer safe—such a loud noise would surely attract the attention of everyone on Mount Hua.
Ning Zhongze hurried away, glancing around anxiously to see if anyone had spotted her.
But she failed to notice Yue Lingshan walking straight toward her.
Thud!
The two collided head-on.
“Ah!”
“Ouch!”
Yue Lingshan cried out in pain, lifting her head to see who had bumped into her, ready to lash out.
The next second, she was stunned.
“Mother? It’s you?”
“Shan’er!!”
Ning Zhongze hadn’t expected to run into her daughter either. Panic flickered across her face.
“Mother, why are you here? I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” Yue Lingshan asked.
“Oh, I was just out for a walk nearby. I heard a noise over here, so I came to check it out,” Ning Zhongze lied without batting an eye.
“But you’re going the opposite direction…” Yue Lingshan looked confused, her brows tightening, lips slightly pouting—an adorable expression.
“I… I was going to call for help!” Ning Zhongze’s face flushed, and her voice trembled slightly.
“Really?” Yue Lingshan sounded doubtful.
Ning Zhongze’s expression grew more nervous. Her eyes darted about, then suddenly lit up with an idea.
“Shan’er, since you’re here, let’s go check it out together. That sound came from the kitchen, didn’t it?”
“Oh! Right, let’s go, Mother!” Yue Lingshan was easily distracted. Figuring out the source of that loud noise took priority.
Ning Zhongze breathed a sigh of relief. All she could do now was pray that Linghu Chong had already left the kitchen.
The mother and daughter hurried toward the kitchen.
What do you think?
