Chapter 17: Traitor, How Dare You Contradict Your Master’s Wife?

“Father is here!” Yue Lingshan turned her head toward the main entrance and said softly.

Ning Zhongze quickly withdrew the strange expression on her face and returned to her usual dignified demeanor as the wife of the sect leader.

Not long after, a figure appeared outside the door.

“Junior sister, Shan’er!”

“Are you in there?”

Yue Buqun called out from outside but did not come in directly.

Ning Zhongze said nothing.

Yue Lingshan also didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she glanced at Ning Zhongze and asked, “Mother, should we let Father in?”

“Forget it, let’s go out instead! It’s so late, he’s probably here to call us for dinner,” Ning Zhongze said.

After speaking, she rose from the bed, picked up the simple palace-style dress hanging nearby, and draped it over her graceful, curvaceous, and exquisitely shaped figure.

The two of them then headed for the door.

“Junior sister, Shan—”

Creak!!!

The door opened, and Ning Zhongze and Yue Lingshan stepped out.

Seeing them exit the room, Yue Buqun was momentarily stunned. Then, with a puzzled look, he asked, “Junior sister, Shan’er! You were inside? Why didn’t you answer me?”

His brows furrowed slightly, showing a trace of displeasure.

“Didn’t we just get up and come out?” Ning Zhongze replied blandly.

“I see, that explains it,” Yue Buqun felt a bit better and looked at Ning Zhongze with concern. “How are you feeling, junior sister? Are you any better? I’ve already called for a physician—he’ll take a look at you shortly.”

“Mm! I’m much better. No need for a physician—his medical skills may not even match mine. I know my own body; it’s nothing serious. A few days of rest will be enough.”

Ning Zhongze spoke casually, not wanting to see the physician. She was confident she was fine. If the physician did examine her, he might ‘find something’ that wasn’t even there.

“Well… all right then. If you don’t want to see him, that’s fine.”

Yue Buqun was at a loss for words. She did have a point—although she wasn’t a famed physician, her medical knowledge surpassed that of the average traveling doctor.

Since she didn’t want to see him, he had no reason to insist.

Still, he felt that his wife’s attitude toward him seemed a bit colder than usual.

Is it just my imagination?

“By the way, senior brother, besides all this, was there something else you came for?” Ning Zhongze asked calmly.

Yue Buqun hadn’t come to check on her all day, and now that he had, he brought a cold face. Ning Zhongze really didn’t feel like talking to him.

“Oh! Nothing else—just came to see you and to call you both for dinner. It’s about that time,” Yue Buqun said, raising his hand, just now remembering why he came.

“Then let’s go. After sleeping all day, I feel a bit hungry,” Ning Zhongze nodded slightly, her expression mostly emotionless.

Yue Buqun nodded. “In that case, let’s go eat.”

“I’ll go call senior brother!”

At the mention of food, Yue Lingshan suddenly remembered that Linghu Chong hadn’t eaten all day, and she rushed off anxiously.

“Wait, Shan’er!” Ning Zhongze suddenly called out just as Yue Lingshan was about to dash off.

“What is it, Mother?” Yue Lingshan stopped and turned back, confusion written all over her face.

The image of Linghu Chong flashed through Ning Zhongze’s mind, making her agitated. She blurted out without thinking: “Don’t call Chong’er. I don’t want to see him these next few days.”

“Huh?”

“Why?”

Yue Lingshan and Yue Buqun spoke in unison, both staring at Ning Zhongze, completely bewildered, with question marks practically sprouting from their heads.

“Mother, did senior brother do something wrong? Did he upset you and make you angry, so you don’t want to see him?”

Yue Lingshan recalled how Linghu Chong had been like a child who’d done something wrong, staying by her mother’s side all day. She immediately assumed he had done something to anger her.

Yue Buqun thought the same. His expression turned serious as he said sternly, “Junior sister, is it like Shan’er said? Did our top disciple offend you? That rascal—always stirring up trouble. I’ll make sure to teach him a lesson this time.”

In his mind, Linghu Chong was a restless troublemaker. This time, he had to properly discipline him.

Upon hearing the word ‘offend’, Ning Zhongze’s face flushed in panic. Realizing she had misspoken and reacted too strongly, she quickly clarified: “No! No! You’ve misunderstood. It’s not that Chong’er did anything wrong.”

He didn’t do anything wrong—he just pressed me the whole night.

Of course, that second half of the sentence was something Ning Zhongze definitely didn’t dare to say out loud.

Upon hearing that Linghu Chong hadn’t caused trouble, Yue Lingshan breathed a sigh of relief.

“Then what is it?” x2

Yue Lingshan and Yue Buqun asked at the same time.

“I was just thinking that we’ve been hunted by mysterious black-clothed people these past few days, living in constant fear. The mental pressure is too great, so I wanted Chong’er to rest more and not be disturbed.”

Utter nonsense—Ning Zhongze was completely making things up.

She really didn’t want to see Linghu Chong right now, unsure of how to face him. Especially if they were to sit at the same table with Yue Buqun—that image alone was terrifying to imagine.

“Oh, I see!”

Yue Lingshan and Yue Buqun both nodded, fully believing her explanation.

Ning Zhongze had always been especially kind to Linghu Chong, so they simply took it as a sign of her concern.

Yue Lingshan thought about how Linghu Chong hadn’t rested all day either, so she didn’t question it further.

Yue Buqun trusted Ning Zhongze completely and had no reason to doubt her.

“All right, let’s just go eat ourselves,” Ning Zhongze said.

Without caring about their reactions, she walked off with graceful poise.

As she turned her back to them, Ning Zhongze slightly parted her red lips and let out a soft breath, lowering her guarded heart just a bit.

Yue Buqun and Yue Lingshan looked at each other silently and followed her.

Once the three of them were gone, Linghu Chong finally stepped out from his hiding place.

“Whew!”

Linghu Chong let out a long breath. That situation had been truly nerve-wracking—he was terrified that Ning Zhongze might spill the truth.

Fortunately, she didn’t. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be able to stay on Mount Hua anymore.

He could understand why Ning Zhongze didn’t want to see him. After all, she was the esteemed and noble wife of the sect leader, a woman revered by all in Huashan. How could she face anyone after something like that?

“Sigh…” Linghu Chong sighed. Things were getting complicated.

Gurgle, gurgle!

Just then, his stomach let out a hungry growl.

He touched his empty belly—he hadn’t eaten all day, and after a long, exhausting ‘battle’, the hunger hit him like a wave now that the tension had eased.

“Better go find something to eat first!”

With a flash, Linghu Chong disappeared from the spot.
