Chapter 11.2 – Grasp of the Situation
I can’t log out.
I panicked. Come to think of it, I never learned how to log out. There was no explanation or tutorial.
How do I return to reality?
"Logout…"
I muttered the word, but nothing happened.
"Logoff. Close. Interruption. End. Menu. Open. Save."
Still nothing.
"Menu open. Main menu. End menu. Options menu. End options. Window. Window open. Menu window. End window. Memory. Save. End save. Overwrite save. Reset. Clear. Comeback. Return. End. Over. Finished..."
I said everything I could think of, but nothing changed.
I can’t return to reality.
Or wait—was this ever a game to begin with?
My senses tell me that this place is absolutely real. This can’t be a dream.
Even if this were some kind of virtual reality game, I’ve never heard of one this perfect—especially one you enter just by clicking a browser screen. I didn’t wear a headset or use any special device.
This world feels real, but it’s not virtual reality.
In short, it’s just plain reality.
Still, I have reasons to believe this is a game. I used the appraisal skill and checked my status:
Michio Kaga
-
Male, 17 Years Old
-
Villager Lv2
-
Thief Lv2
-
Equipment: Sandal Boots, Ring of Determination
Such things should only be possible in a game.
But then I saw my clothes—my jersey was stained with blood.
In games, blood vanishes after a while. Yet here, the stains remain.
If this really were a game, why hasn’t the blood disappeared?
So is this truly a game world? Even if it is, if I can’t log out, it might as well be reality.
Can I really return to the real world?
Warning!
You have chosen to abandon your original world and live in another.
You cannot return.
Do you wish to continue?
That warning—I'm sure I saw it at the end of the settings when I was at home. Maybe it was real.
I can use appraisal. I even have Durandal, the Level 6 weapon. Still, that doesn’t guarantee this is a game.
If the settings I chose apply to this world, that warning must’ve been genuine.
"Excuse me," came a voice.
While I was lost in thought, the village chief entered with a tub of hot water.
"Ah, yes. Please use this to clean yourself."
An older woman, possibly a maid, placed down the tub and handed me a simple cloth—more like a rag than a towel.
"Sorry. We’ve also prepared some clothes for you since yours are dirty. We’ll wash them."
"Thank you," I replied.
Another older woman, perhaps the chief’s wife, set folded clothes on a board. Then she and the chief left.
Alone, I took off my jersey and wiped myself down. It was stained red in several spots—the blood of the thieves.
The stains show no sign of fading, no matter how long I wait. Of course they wouldn’t disappear. This isn’t a game.
I exhaled deeply.
Yes, I can use appraisal. I have a powerful weapon.
But who decided this was a game?
Final Warning!
You cannot ever return.
That last message was no lie. All the settings I selected are active here.
This isn’t some game—it’s reality. This is the different world I chose.
I must accept it.
I realized it—I had been running from reality.
But from what?
Murder.
In a game, defeating someone is just part of the gameplay.
But this isn’t a game. I killed real people.
I wanted to believe this was a game because that would make it easier.
But that was just wishful thinking—an illusion.
I must acknowledge it. This is real.
I committed murder. I took a life.
When I struck, I thought it was just an event in a game. But the feeling of Durandal cutting through flesh still lingers in my hand.
I ended someone’s life.
Still, this world is one where thieves attack villages.
If I can’t log out, I may have to kill again. That may be unavoidable.
Better that I acted when I believed it was a game. If I had hesitated, I might have died.
They were thieves. There’s no point in feeling regret.
If I hadn’t killed them, they would’ve killed me.
I must accept that.
I took a deep breath and steeled myself.
This is reality.
I will live in this world from now on.
To survive, I may need to get my hands dirty. I cannot be afraid of that.
I must do whatever is necessary.
Now that I think about it, there was another reason I believed this world followed my settings.
I thought about "Character Reset."
A character screen appeared in my mind. I could move the cursor with my thoughts.
It seems I can still reset my character using bonus points.
Even the warning message was applied.
Strangely, I had 1 bonus point left. I thought I used them all—maybe I overlooked something.
For now, I closed the screen.
I decided to change into the clothes left for me.
The shirt and trousers were huge and indigo-colored—the pants a darker shade.
The fabric was stiff and uncomfortable, but wearable.

-
Villager Lv2
-
Thief Lv2
-
Equipment: Sandal Boots, Ring of Determination
It seems this clothing doesn’t count as actual equipment. Durandal wasn’t listed either since I set it down.
Should I unequip the bonus item?
Durandal is a remarkable sword. Incredibly powerful. I realized it during my battle.
But its power also makes it a target.
In a game, items can’t be stolen.
In reality, there are no such safeguards.
I’m wearing someone else’s sandal boots. If I could claim them, someone else could take Durandal.
That’s dangerous for two reasons:
-
If Durandal is stolen, I might lose the 63 bonus points invested in it.
-
Someone who tries to steal Durandal might kill me to get it.
What is the death penalty in this world?
Do I revive in a church with a level penalty, or is it permanent death?
In any case, I shouldn’t carry Durandal around casually.
If I need it, I can reassign the points.
I tested this theory by thinking of "Character Reset" without holding Durandal.
I couldn’t edit the weapon slot. But I could still unequip the ring.
So, if Durandal is stolen, the points are gone.
I picked up Durandal again and reopened the menu.
I removed the Level 6 weapon, and my bonus points rose to 67.
I reassigned them:
-
Required EXP reduced to 1/10 (costs points)
-
Gained EXP x10 (costs points)
-
Then further reduced to 1/20 (remaining: 3 points)
-
Chose Third Job (costs 2 points)
Final bonus point count: 0.
Durandal disappeared.
I thought of "Job Setting."
Current Jobs:
-
Villager Lv2
-
Thief Lv2
-
Hero Lv1 (new)
I likely acquired the Hero job after defending the village.
I tried to change my First Job to Hero, but it wasn’t allowed. Only Villager or Thief could be selected.
Villager offers minor stamina increase. No skills. Pretty weak.
I made Hero my Second Job. Its effects are outstanding.
Thief became my Third Job. It boosts agility slightly but has no skills.
I finished the job setting and confirmed my status:

Ready to survive in this world.
What do you think?
