Mira crossed straight through the main Academy building, going past into the training area. There she ran into Creos, who was going the other way.
「Ohh, if it isn’t Creos. Were you teaching a practical lesson today?」
When Mira called to him, Creos quickly ran up to her, replying affirmatively. He had just finished wrapping up a training session with the students. He also mentioned that Emilia had helped him teach during the lesson.
「She’s improving visibly every day. I almost wish she’d become an instructor for us when she graduates.」
Creos said in a half joking manner, but his eyes were dead serious.
Currently, there was only one actual instructor for summoners, Hinata. In a way, the fact that Creos spent so much time at the Academy even though he was the vice-elder of the tower showed as much. Now the number of people interested in becoming summoners was increasing, so the demand for instructors was only rising. Finding more of them would be essential to ensure the future of the next generation of summoners.
Sadly, Emilia came from an aristocratic background, so Creos’ wish was unlikely to be fulfilled.
「And this reminds me, I received word from Lord Solomon this morning… Is it true you’ll be leaving for your next mission soon?」
It seemed that the news about Meilin’s disguise being ready had also reached Creos.「Well, yes. The tournament is set to start in just two weeks, so I need to make sure I catch her before that.」
Around a month had passed since the official announcement for the tournament had been sent all over the continent. Knowing Meilin, she had also heard of it and was also on her way, if not already there. On top of that she would want to compete in the free for all bracket, where she would stand out a lot. Mira’s mission was to find her and make sure she wore the disguise before competing.
「So it is true. I guess that means her lessons will also come to an end today then.」
With Mira traveling to Nirvana, she would no longer be able to teach Emilia, who would have to be content with her regular Academy lessons again.
Those would likely be insufficient for her now, after advancing so much under Mira’s personal guidance. So Creos was considering switching the planned lessons moving forward, or having Emilia take a teaching role for the other students instead.
「I would vote for having her teach the others. Through teaching, one’s own knowledge becomes more deeply rooted. That’s something I’ve experienced myself through teaching you and Emilia.」
Figuring out the best way to convey knowledge, making it easy to digest, forced one to think of it more deeply, and in turn also making the one teaching wiser. Mira also felt like she had taught Emilia everything that was necessary, and she could figure out the rest on her own.
「I see… You have a point. It’s decided then, tomorrow I’ll have Emilia standing alongside us.」
Creos had been helping out as a teacher for a while too, so he also knew exactly what Mira was trying to say. So he decided that Emilia would help teach the other students, also as a way for her to review her own knowledge.
「Yes, I’ll leave her in your care.」
Mira was convinced that Emilia would continue to improve, and she was looking forward to seeing her progress once she returned from her trip, and the same went for Creos’ own improvements.
「But that also means that tonight we’ll have our last training session in a while.」
She had mainly been teaching partial summoning to Creos, and she decided that it would be nice to have a general review of everything as a last training session. But Creos replied with an awkward smile when Mira brought that up.
「I’ll be waiting for you tonight.」
Mira said that and continued on her way, at least for a few steps, when Creos seemed to make up his mind and stopped her.
「Umm…actually…」
He sounded a bit hesitant to say it, but he slowly explained, 「Work has piled up a bit for me, and I need to prepare some materials for lessons, so I don’t think I’ll be able to return to the tower tonight.」
「Oh, I see.」
Creos would not be able to make it to their training session that night, and it would be quite some time before Mira would be back again.
「I guess we have no choice then. At least I managed to teach you the bare minimum, and I’m sure you’ll be able to figure out the rest yourself.」
They had been training nearly every night, and while the sessions were not very long, the student still was the vice-elder of the Tower of Summoning, so Mira had gone all out teaching every time, making each session very fruitful. By now, Creos knew everything he needed to master partial summoning on his own.
She would leave more advanced tactics like mixing partial summoning with simultaneous summoning, or delayed attacks, until the next time she came back. So all she could do was urge Creos to master the fundamentals by the time she came back, and he promised to try his best.
「I’ll be away for a while, so I’ll leave things in your care again.」
「Yes, I’ll make sure to watch over everything.」
Mira was going to leave the next morning, this was likely going to be the last time she was going to see Creos before she came back again. So she left everything in Creos’ care, who seemed proud of being entrusted with such a responsibility.
Then she plopped a hand on his shoulder, whispering that there would be no problem if he did not get the time to master partial summoning by the time she came back.
「If that happens, I’ll just have to drill you every night until it clicks.」
「I…I’ll do my best to master it..!」
Creos had flashbacks to the times when Mira got serious about training, so he had to put a lot of effort into appearing calm as he replied.
With their conversation concluded, Creos headed to the main Academy building, while Mira entered the training area. After taking a few steps forward, Creos stopped and turned around, looking at the building Mira had entered.
(Well, now that I said all of that, I’ll have to actually think of something interesting for tomorrow’s lessons.)
Creos had not been fully truthful about not being able to return to the tower. The reason for that white lie was not just to skip on training, but something far more important. He was worried for his health and safety.
At least now, he felt like he had saved himself from a harrowing experience, so he headed to the classroom while pondering on what to teach the next day.
Over in the training area, Mira began teaching Emilia after her lunch break. Halfway through, Mira was reminded of Lily and the maids, and began to wonder if she should introduce Emilia to them, as a sort of scapegoat. Mira was going to be away for at least a month, which meant the maids’ urges would only build up the entire time.
But then she put an end to those thoughts. She did not want her dear pupil to go through something like that.
Even with those frivolous thoughts circling her mind, she was able to keep the lesson going, and time felt like it flew by.
「That’s it for today then. Now, starting tomorrow…」
Mira had been teaching Emilia on an almost daily basis, but that would come to an end now, and as soon as Mira announced that she would be traveling to Nirvana, Emilia’s eyes looked like the world was about to end. So Mira also told her about the conversation she had had with Creos earlier.
「Try to share the things I’ve taught you with your fellow students. That way you’ll understand everything on an analytical level, and not just by instinct or feeling.」
Now, whenever the students would have a class about simultaneous summoning, Emilia would also help out as an assistant teacher, allowing her to gain a more precise understanding of the underlying theory. And Mira promised that if Emilia did that, Mira would continue teaching her once she was back.
「I…teaching… Alright! I’ll do my best!」
At first, she seemed unsure about it, but when Mira made that promise, Emilia’s eyes filled with determination.
「Thank you, thank you so much! I’ll be waiting for you!」
It could be months before Mira returned, but that promise was enough to keep Emilia going.
Maybe it was thanks to the guidance she received, but Emilia had also matured lately. Mira trusted that Emilia would keep her word, and when she came back, Emilia’s understanding would also be much more intricate. That made Mira already start to wonder what to teach her when that day came.
「I’ll also have to do my best!」
Mira did not want to fall behind, seeing how much Emilia had grown, so with renewed motivation, she left the training area.
After that she dropped by the orphanage, which was next to the Academy. She had been visiting the orphanage twice a week, so she had gotten rather familiar with their schedule and knew where to find the children.
As soon as she got there, the faces of the youngest kids lit up with happiness as they all rushed to her. She happily embraced them and began playing with them, while also preaching about the marvels of summoning.
After sunset, Mira went to tell Artesia about her trip before leaving to return to the tower. It was best for Artesia to know that Mira would not be able to visit for a while.
「There’s this tournament being organized in Nirvana, you see, and I have to drop by for a bit.」
Mira briefly explained why she had to leave, and after a bit of thinking, Artesia replied, 「I see, you’re looking for Meilin.」
Artesia had been able to figure out who Mira was looking for simply from hearing the type of event it was.
「Alright, I’ll tell the children that you won’t be able to visit for a while.」
And she also gleaned what Mira was trying to get at, so she said that while placing a hand on Mira’s head. She understood that the children would be saddened by the news, and Mira could not bring herself to tell them herself.
「Mhm…thank you.」
