Chapter 99: Chapter 99 You’re Pretending to Sleep
Shen Heyu’s mind suddenly tensed up.
She closed her eyes and feigned sleep, cradling the already slumbering Yuexue in her arms. The sleep of children is deep, and Yuexue had no awareness of someone entering the room.
Pei Yansi stood beside the bed, looking at the mother and daughter on the big bed, and that satisfying feeling from the bottom of his heart began to rise once more.
His chest felt as if it were filled with something warm, no longer the feeling of being alone in the empty bridal chamber.
He was now very certain that he wanted the two of them, big and small.
He wanted them by his side, calling him daddy, calling him husband.
He approached the bedside, patted Shen Heyu’s shoulder, and said, “You’re pretending to sleep.” Pointing directly at her charade, he indeed saw her long lashes flicker.
But she remained motionless, determined to keep up the façade until the end.
Pei Yansi quietly watched, said nothing, knowing she was pretending, not wanting to expose her; he only wanted to silently enjoy the peaceful moments with his daughter and… his ex-wife.
He slid onto the bed.
He reached out and wrapped his arms around Shen Heyu, the movement familiar, the posture natural, as if the two had always been like this.
That arm was hot, resting on her waist, making Shen Heyu very uncomfortable, especially as the man’s scent filled her nostrils.
She was becoming increasingly confused; what on earth did her ex-husband want? Did he want her to go back? Did he want to remarry her? But with this kind of attitude?
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became.
Angry as she was, for some reason, being embraced by Pei Yansi like this made her feel sleepier than usual, and she fell deep asleep in his arms.
Soon, Pei Yansi heard the even and prolonged breaths coming from her.
His thin lips slightly curved, his eyes filled with a light yet apparent delight. He was holding her, and she was holding their daughter.
The scene on the bed was incredibly warm, like a family of three that had always been very happy.
The following morning, when Shen Heyu awoke, she was the only one left on the bed.
She got up from the bed, the scent of the man still lingering in her breath. Just like many years ago, she subconsciously reached out to touch, and the bedsheets beside her still retained some warmth, signaling he had not risen long ago.
She got out of bed and walked out of the bedroom.
As soon as she went out, she saw Pei Yansi playing with Yuexue in the living room. Yuexue was in his arms, holding a fairy tale book, asking Pei Yansi those very childish questions, like why the prince liked the princess and why the witch wanted to harm the princess.
Shen Heyu was worried that Pei Yansi would get impatient and scold Yuexue.
But, to her surprise, he was extremely patient, answering each question one by one.
After listening, Yuexue suddenly asked, “Then will you and mommy live happily together forever like the princess and the prince?”
As if he hadn’t expected the question to suddenly turn to himself, Pei Yansi was momentarily startled and did not answer immediately.
But that pause, in the eyes of Shen Heyu, was a denial.
Her heart stung.
She knew, no matter what, this man would not want her back, to live with her because of her.
He must still view her as a plaything, just like a few years ago.
Thinking this, Shen Heyu stepped forward, interrupting the conversation between father and daughter, and asked, “Yuexue, have you had breakfast?”
Yuexue nodded, jumped down from Pei Yansi’s knee, and hugged her, saying, “Mommy, he said he’ll take us to the amusement park, will you come too?”
Seeing the hope in her daughter’s eyes, Shen Heyu silently gave Pei Yansi a glare.
She could of course tell that this was his way of getting close to her. She subconsciously wanted to refuse, but Pei Yansi seemed to have foreseen it and took the initiative to say, “Perfect, let’s go together. I bought an extra adult ticket.”
“…” Shen Heyu knew it was deliberate, didn’t she?
“Mommy, let’s go, let’s go!” Yuexue pulled at her wrist, shaking it with anticipation in her eyes.
She could feel the friendliness from this stranger who could be her dad, and she also longed to experience what it would be like to have both a mom and a dad to play with.
Especially since she had been slightly more aware of things, she had often heard Aunt Ning say her mother had a hard time raising her alone.
So she too wanted to find herself a dad.
Faced with her daughter’s hope, Shen Heyu ultimately couldn’t refuse. After breakfast, they played at home for a while before the three set off in the afternoon.
Shen Heyu changed into a set of clothes that were refreshing and easy to move in, and Yuexue was dressed in matching mother-daughter outfits. As they left the house, she intended to hold Yuexue’s hand, but Pei Yansi watched for a moment and also walked to the other side of Yuexue to take the little girl’s hand.
The three of them looked even more like…
Pei Yansi frowned—like nothing at all, they were simply a family of three.
Once they were in the car, Yuexue cheered and almost fell several times, but Pei Yansi’s quick reflexes kept her from falling.
Shen Heyu had hardly ever seen Yuexue so happy, and seeing her daughter’s smile made her smile involuntarily as well.
Pei Yansi, seeing this, finally swept away the gloominess that had shadowed his heart for the entire day before.
Soon, the car arrived at the amusement park.
In order to give his daughter a real experience, Pei Yansi didn’t rent the entire park but instead took her on all the famous rides like most ordinary families.
At last, there was an attraction for parents and children swings.
Yuexue pulled at Shen Heyu, wanting to go on it.
Shen Heyu, embarrassed about playing this as an adult, was about to let her go by herself when a woman carrying a broom passed by.
The woman said, “Excuse me, please make way.”
Shen Heyu looked at the woman’s face and froze for a moment. She didn’t seem to hear what was said, let alone move aside.
The face was so much like her sister Shen Fanshuang, but weathered by years of hard work, that innocence from six years ago was gone, leaving behind only weariness and hardship!
Bai Sheng’er!
How had she ended up like this, sweeping the floors at an amusement park?
Bai Sheng’er was already in a bad mood that day, scolded by her supervisor, and now she’d encountered tourists who wouldn’t listen, she was about to snap at them when she looked up and locked eyes with Shen Heyu’s still beautiful face.
She froze, “Is it you?!”
Compared to her shock, Shen Heyu seemed much calmer, “Do I know you?”
Saying so, she picked Yuexue up and pulled her a little behind herself.
Afraid that Bai Sheng’er would do something inappropriate.
Her action naturally caught Bai Sheng’er’s attention, and she looked at Yuexue, whose face resembled Pei Yan’s so much.
She was even more astonished. Pei Yan’s daughter?!
Lifting her head, she saw the man standing behind Shen Heyu.
Pei Yan was dressed in a formal suit, his bowtie immaculate. His eyes were full of indifference when he looked at Bai Sheng’er, as if he never knew her.
This look pained Bai Sheng’er’s heart.
She blinked and was about to walk toward him.
What do you think?
