Chapter 411: Got It, Xiao Zhu Is Fine, Xiao Zhu
“General Zhang, I’ve brought today’s letters for you,” Zhong Baisheng said respectfully.
The man before him appeared plain and unremarkable, yet he held the highest authority in the Xuanwu Fortress.
As one of the many commanders under Zhang Longxiang, Zhong Baisheng naturally held deep reverence for him.
Zhang Longxiang nodded without even looking up.
Zhong Baisheng dared not speak further. He silently stood by and began sorting through the letters.
He was one of Zhang Longxiang’s longtime subordinates—one of the few qualified to enter the tower.
Every night, it was his duty to collect the letters from the boxes and bring them to Zhang Longxiang.
Of course, Zhang Longxiang was far too busy to read every single submission.
That’s why Zhong Baisheng had to sift through them first, filtering out the baseless ramblings.
Before long, he had sorted through the pile.
Then he noticed a thick envelope—so thick it was equivalent to more than a dozen letters.
Zhong Baisheng raised an eyebrow.
He had retrieved this from the “Demon Informants” box.
But this… was a bit too much, wasn’t it?
Just how many Demon Suppressors had this person reported?
Could it be that this was just someone driven by envy, trying to slander others?
Zhong Baisheng opened the envelope and began reading.
Name after name flashed before his eyes.
The more he read, the more unsettled he became.
Each member of the Demon-Slaying Society was listed with convincing detail—
All seemingly parasitized by demons.
There were more than twenty names in total!
But when he reached the final name, his eyes widened in disbelief.
He was completely shaken.
The name was Lin Yuanxin—one of his sixteen centurions!
Lin Yuanxin was powerful, a centurion Zhong Baisheng relied on heavily.
He had earned great merit, slaying countless demons—including true demons.
How could such a loyal Demon Suppressor be a demon in disguise?
Impossible. Absolutely impossible!
Zhong Baisheng’s first instinct was to toss the letter into the trash.
At that moment, Zhang Longxiang happened to lift his head from the scrolls and exhaled a heavy breath.
“Your expression changed significantly. What did you see?” Zhang Longxiang asked calmly.
With his level of perception, it was easy to sense even subtle emotional shifts around him.
Even though Zhong Baisheng had tried to keep calm, he couldn’t hide it.
With no choice, Zhong Baisheng honestly explained everything he had read.
In the end, his expression turned stern. “This report is pure fabrication—how dare someone slander a centurion who has rendered such great service.”
“If I find out who wrote this, I’ll drag them out and punish them severely.”
Zhang Longxiang calmly tapped the table with his fingers. “Let me see that report.”
Zhong Baisheng was stunned, but didn’t dare delay. He quickly handed it over.
Zhang Longxiang skimmed through it at a rapid pace.
As he read, his brows began to furrow.
Zhong Baisheng quickly added, “General, surely you think this is all made up nonsense as well?”
Zhang Longxiang shook his head. “It’s well-reasoned and convincing.”
“The true demons Lin Yuanxin has killed all had past grievances with An Zhenxiong—or had once slighted him.”
Zhong Baisheng frowned. “But these details are far too specific. How could an ordinary Demon Suppressor know any of this?”
Zhang Longxiang pondered for a moment. “You can return for now.”
“Yes, sir.” Zhong Baisheng dared not question further and simply nodded.
Zhang Longxiang took out a jade token and injected it with spiritual energy.
After a while, a hurried voice came from within.
“Why are you contacting me? I’m deep in hostile territory—it’s easy to get exposed!”
Zhang Longxiang spoke in a low tone. “I need you to investigate a demon named An Zhenxiong. Find out which demons in the past had feuds with him.”
That person sounded puzzled. “An Zhenxiong? With the ‘Zhen’ title, he's just a mere True Demon. You want me to pull strings for someone like that?”
Zhang Longxiang’s tone grew solemn. “This matter is critical. It may involve a demon who has been hiding in the Xuanwu Fortress for decades.”
Upon hearing this, the other man’s tone became serious as well. “Understood. I’ll start the investigation immediately. Give me a day—I'll have your answer.”
“Good. Thank you, Xiao Zhu,” Zhang Longxiang said with a smile.
The other man immediately snapped, veins practically bulging from his forehead. “Call me Xiao Zhu one more time—I swear I’ll beat you into the dirt the moment I get back!”
Zhang Longxiang grinned even wider. “Got it, Xiao Zhu. No problem, Xiao Zhu.”
With a growl of frustration, the man cut the communication link.
Zhang Longxiang’s expression shifted instantly, turning serious.
If the intelligence was accurate, then Lin Yuanxin was without a doubt a major threat.
A Peak Demon Venerable—once he coordinated with the demon forces outside the fortress, the resulting damage to the Xuanwu Fortress would be catastrophic.
If the man turned out not to be a demon, all would be well.
But if he was, then exposing him early would be an enormous victory.
It could mean saving thousands of Demon Suppressors.
Perhaps it could even mean saving his own life.
Zhang Longxiang let out a heavy breath and stepped in front of his desk, turning a mirror with a light touch.
The mirror rotated and suddenly displayed a scene at the entrance of the tower.
“Rewind to midnight. Play everything from the beginning,” Zhang Longxiang said softly.
The mirror’s image reversed instantly.
Then it began playing from midnight onward.
One figure after another appeared at the tower, delivering letters.
Finally, Zhang Longxiang’s gaze locked onto a young Demon Suppressor who placed a thick bundle of letters into the wooden box.
“Who are you?” Zhang Longxiang stared at the overly youthful face, thoughtful.
One day later—
Zhang Longxiang received a response from “Xiao Zhu.”
“…That’s all of it. I’ve told you everything I found.”
“But this An Zhenxiong has been missing for a long time. He probably died on the battlefield,” Xiao Zhu added, puzzled. “Why are you even looking into him?”
Zhang Longxiang tapped his desk. “He’s not dead.”
Xiao Zhu paused. “Not dead? Where is he?”
As soon as he asked, a realization struck him like lightning.
He blurted out, “He’s in the Demon Suppression Fortress? In your Xuanwu Fortress?”
Zhang Longxiang nodded solemnly. “You guessed right. I used to think that the Peak Demon Venerable hiding in the fortress had already escaped.”
“But now I know—he’s still here. And he’s one of my own centurions.”
“A centurion with a glorious record, who’s slain demons bravely on the battlefield.”
Xiao Zhu frowned. “I get it. Most of the demons he killed were his former enemies.”
“Using his position to settle old scores… he’s got some cunning.”
Zhang Longxiang exhaled slowly. “Enough about that. How’s your own mission going?”
Xiao Zhu replied calmly, “No progress. I can’t access deeper areas, so there’s no way to confirm whether the Undying Demon Emperor really exists.”
“No more talk. This kind of contact is risky. Unless I reach out first, don’t contact me again.”
Zhang Longxiang nodded. “Alright. Take care.”
The connection ended.
Zhang Longxiang turned his gaze toward the brightly lit Xuanwu Fortress, eyes deep and thoughtful.
“Lin Yuanxin is An Zhenxiong.”
“And that list… was real.”
“It’s time to make the arrest.”
With that, Zhang Longxiang leapt forward—diving straight off the hundred-zhang tower.
