Chapter 897 A Battle Between Father & Son
Patriarch’s Mansion, Uchiha District
Fugaku was seated silently in the hall, preparing himself for the upcoming battle while awaiting the report of the initial strike. He closed his eyes and sighed, "It would be prudent not to overly rely on Dojutsu."
During the first stage of the Godaime Hokage Election, he extensively employed both Susano'o and Amaterasu, resulting in a significant decline in his Visual Prowess. This realization compelled him to use the abilities of his Mangekyō Sharingan sparingly, and he understood the importance of concluding tonight's battle as efficiently as possible.
Naturally, these were only his musings, as Fugaku was acutely aware that the forthcoming battles would not be easy and would demand substantial time and effort. There was even a possibility of him losing his Visual Prowess altogether, which was highly frustrating.
Contemplating this, Fugaku couldn't help but wonder how Shisui, Shinichi, and the two Homusubi of Amatsukami managed to wield their Mangekyō Sharingan so extensively. "Do these individuals not lose their Visual Prowess? Perhaps I should inquire with Shisui," he thought, deciding to seek Shisui's advice on dealing with the potential loss of Visual Prowess after tonight's battle.
Just as Fugaku made his resolve, the sound of fighting reached his ears. This caused him to frown and feel an ominous sensation in his heart. It was not yet time for the final battle, and his trusted clansmen wouldn't engage in such loud conflicts without reason. Why was there the sound of fighting?
As he was about to rise and investigate the situation, a figure entered the mansion. Fugaku was taken aback when he recognized the person. "Itachi?"
"Tou-san," nodded Itachi, confirming his identity.
Seeing that it was indeed Itachi, Fugaku relaxed a little but questioned with a frown, "Why haven't you set out yet?"
According to the original plan, Itachi should have led a small team to stealthily proceed with the assassination of Godaime Hokage. However, instead of embarking on the mission, Itachi was standing before him.Under the cold moonlight, Itachi stood at the entrance of the hall and calmly asserted, "Tou-san… It's time to put an end to this."
Fugaku furrowed his brows and glanced past Itachi. Outside, the commotion had escalated into anguished cries and furious shouts. It was evident that what erupted in the Uchiha District was not a mere riot but a fierce battle among Shinobi!
Taking note of the situation outside and recalling Itachi's earlier words, Fugaku came to a realization, and his eyes grew sharp as he looked at his son, "Itachi… have you… Betrayed the Clan and allied with the enemy?"
Facing his father's probing gaze, Itachi lowered his eyes, "Tou-san… this Coup you have planned is nothing but a tragic endeavor destined to fail. For the sake of the clan and the village, I find myself with no alternative but to intervene and put a stop to it myself."
"Humph… foolish child," scoffed Fugaku with a cold snort. He continued in a somber tone, "Do you truly believe this Coup is solely my ambition? It's the unanimous voice of the entire clan. Those corrupt individuals cannot stand our existence. They expect us to serve them, but deny us the chance to rise. They will continue to outstrip us and push us to the brink of extinction until they are satisfied. We have no choice but to fight back."
From Fugaku's perspective, the Uchiha clan possessed the strength to challenge the Hokage faction's authority, but they were barred from attaining the position of Hokage or interfering in the village’s politics. As a result, they would inevitably be seen as a threat to the village and be annihilated. To avoid this grim fate, they had to strike proactively.
Itachi shook his head, speaking resolutely, "Godaime Hokage is different from them. He won't be unjust to the Uchiha. Under his rule, we can reclaim what rightfully belongs to us."
"Foolishness!" retorted Fugaku in anger. "Godaime?! He's nothing more than a powerless puppet. What authority does he have to grant justice to the Uchiha?"
Itachi raised his head, meeting his father's gaze. "I can't predict the future, but your actions tonight leave no hope for the Uchiha. Therefore, please stop this."
Looking at Itachi with disappointment in his eyes, Fugaku listened attentively to the commotion beyond the mansion's walls. He noticed that the wailing outside came exclusively from their clansmen, and the ninja battles did not seem very intense. Many conflicts ended swiftly, almost as if the Uchiha clansmen on their side were easily overwhelmed by their adversaries.
Being a formidable individual above Kage's rank himself, Fugaku deduced that the attackers were not numerous but certainly possessed extraordinary strength. To defeat the well-prepared and motivated Uchiha with such ease, they must have wielded Kage-level power at the very least.
Puzzled by their identities, Fugaku wondered, "Could it be Jiraiya and Tsunade?"
Observing his father's puzzled expression, Itachi clarified, "Hokage-sama has reached an agreement with Amatsukami, and the Yondai-Kages are also siding with the village."
Fugaku glared at Itachi, "So, you've disclosed all the information to the village, huh?"
Itachi sighed, "The Coup was destined to fail, and the Elders had foreseen it. Even Yondai-Kage's departure was merely a deception to fool you."
"This… It's impossible!" Fugaku exclaimed incredulously.
"It's because you have been manipulated by them," Itachi responded, shaking his head. "Your vision is limited, and you can't see the true path forward."
"The future that my Mangekyō Sharingan foresees is the path forward!" retorted Fugaku with determination. After a brief pause, he shouted, "There are three individuals in the clan who have awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. We have nothing to fear! So what if the Yondai-Kage has chosen to support them? We can still defeat them!"
Itachi replied bitterly, "If only that were possible." He continued, "In the face of the power that Hokage-sama possesses, the Mangekyō Sharingan is merely a triviality."
"I can't believe you've become such a coward, Itachi," spoke Fugaku through gritted teeth, attempting to control his anger. He questioned, "Where are Shisui and Shinichi?"
Itachi responded casually, "They might be engaged in battles with members of Amatsukami."
"Is that so?" muttered Fugaku thoughtfully. Then, his expression turned resolute as he coldly declared, "If failure is inevitable and our fate is sealed, we will fight to the bitter end. The Uchiha clan will leave indelible scars in the hearts of the village, ensuring they never forget the wrath of the Uchiha!"
With those words, Fugaku ceased trying to dissuade Itachi and grabbed his sword, ready to join the battle. However, Itachi stepped in front of him, locking him with a determined gaze.
Fugaku sighed, "Itachi, you are my son. We will discuss the consequences of your actions later. But for now, step aside. I do not wish to fight my own son, and your Sharingan is not enough to stop me."
Before Fugaku could finish his sentence, a sudden change flickered in Itachi's eyes, startling him. "Mangekyō? Itachi… you!" he exclaimed.
He had always known that his son was a genius on par with Shisui, and he believed Itachi would eventually awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. However, he never expected Itachi to already possess it!
Staring at those eyes, Fugaku inquired, "Since when?"
"A few years ago," replied Itachi, further shaking Fugaku.
"A few years ago?" muttered Fugaku, recovering from the shock. Anger now surged within him as he questioned, "Why did you hide it from me?"
"It was already chaotic with just three individuals possessing the Mangekyō Sharingan. If they were to learn about another, it would hasten our downfall," explained Itachi. He added, "To protect the clan, I chose to keep these eyes concealed. Though Godaime-sama is aware."
Fugaku chuckled in disbelief, "You seem resolute."
Itachi nodded, "Yes."
After a moment of silence, Fugaku smiled, "Very well then… let us determine the fate of the Uchiha Clan." He activated his Mangekyō Sharingan and cast his Genjutsu on Itachi.
…
Simultaneously, one of the doors leading to the hall creaked open, revealing the graceful figure of Uchiha Mikoto. As she observed her husband and son in a tense standoff, she chose not to intercede and took a seat on the side, patiently awaiting the outcome. Having overheard their entire conversation, she found herself torn between two deeply cherished individuals – her husband on one side and her eldest son on the other. Whichever decision the two of them reached, she resolved to abide by the result, offering her unwavering support.
