“Alright, thank you, Auntie.” Nangong Shulan sat down somewhat taken aback. Qin Xue’s mother seemed overly hospitable.
“No problem, you and Qin Xue are friends. Treat our home as your own and make yourself comfortable,” said Nangong Shulan.
“Alright.” Ouyang Ziyu agreed, even though it couldn’t be compared to her own home where everything was more formal and without much freedom, otherwise she would be criticized. If she behaved here as at home, wouldn’t that make others uncomfortable?
“Mom, I’m going to make some soup for Qing Zhu to drink and help her with breastfeeding,” Qin Xue wondered what ingredients she should use.
“You can decide what to make. Just use whatever available in the house. Once your father comes back from paying respects to the ancestors, prepare some chicken for her. It’s more nutritious,” said Nangong Shulan, contemplating whether to kill another chicken.
“Got it. I’ll go check what’s available in the kitchen. I initially wanted to prepare chicken wine, but since there’s no chicken, I’ll just use what I can find,” said Qin Xue as she returned to the kitchen.
Eventually, Qin Xue found a pig’s foot. After cleaning it, she cooked it with peanuts which can improve lactation and beauty. It was like killing two birds with one stone, pretty nice.
“Mom, I’m going to deliver this to Qing Zhu and I’ll be right back. Ouyang, you can relax here, I won’t be long,” Qin Xue said after packing the food into a container, addressing her mother and Ouyang Ziyu.
“Alright, come back soon for dinner,” replied Nangong Shulan, not even looking up from entertaining her grandson in her arms.
“Okay, I got it,” replied Ouyang Ziyu loudly.
“Auntie, is this Qin Xue’s son?” Ouyang Ziyu had been staring at the baby, Yu Chen, in Nangong Shulan’s arms. He was just too cute.
“Yes, this little one cries a lot. His older brother is much better and well-mannered,” said Nangong Shulan while pinching Yu Chen’s chubby little hand. They say that babies who cry a lot get the most candy, and this kiddo sure knows how to charm people. But his parents happen to think otherwise, which is why his brother tends to endear himself more to his parents. In their words, well-behaved kids are more likable, but this little one likes to cry a bit.
“There’s another one? How come I haven’t seen him?” Ouyang Ziyu had not seen Yu Ze when she arrived and thought Qin Xue only had one child. One young child was enough of a surprise, let alone an older brother. She dared not to think at what age Qin Xue got married.
“His uncle took him out to play, they should be back soon,” said Nangong Shulan.
“That’s good, having someone to help with the kids means less strain for her,” said Ouyang Ziyu. She had noticed that since she arrived Qin Xue hadn’t had to do much in terms of childcare, which was definitely less burdensome.
“Yes, we can only help out when she’s at home. Taking care of two children alone outside is exhausting. So we help as much as we can now to let her rest. Once the New Year is over, she’ll be back to the Imperial Capital and it will be tough for her,” said Nangong Shulan. If she could, she’d help her daughter but her daughter insisted that she could manage, so she didn’t interfere.
“You do have a point,” Ouyang Ziyu conceded after a moment’s silence. She might be unmarried but she had heard about these things. The most difficult aspect is often the relationship with the mother-in-law. If she doesn’t help, there’s no choice but to handle things alone.
What do you think?
